No rest for the weary as we go on the road to face a gritty
Fairfield squad, which hung tough with the likes of Providence
and BC and now gets us right across the Sound in Bridgeport.
Anybody taking the ride over?
It's basically the same lineup as last year, and if you recall,
they gave us everything we could handle at IFCU, with SBU
prevailing 72-69 in overtime. It was a miserable non-conference
year for Jay Young and Co., but they rallied in MAAC play,
making it all the way to the conference title game before
falling to Iona. I made the mistake earlier that they actually
won that game, but it was just the Cinderella run in conference.
With Fairfield, it's really going to be a balanced attack, with
a different player in play to lead them in scoring each night.
So far, four games, four different leading scorers, and none of
them is Wojcik, who's probably their most consistent
contributor. He's a former mid-major kid (Richmond) and the son
of longtime coach Dave Wojcik. Wojcik didn't play in last year's
contest and it might've been the difference. He's probably going
to end up being their best shooter from three but is capable of
putting it on the floor too.
The guy I like is Cruz, who's kind of their Tykei
Greene—undersized guy playing the 4, nothing flashy, not a
terrific shooter but he's got a bit of an old man's game, mixing
it up underneath, offensive rebounds, keeping possessions alive.
He and Benning are in their fifth year at Fairfield, so they've
been in a lot of battles together. Wojcik (Richmond) and Caleb
Green (Holy Cross) transferred in and debuted last year so
there's some real chemistry in the backcourt. Their lone Long
Island kid, TJ Long (Rockville Centre/Holy Trinity), has a nice
lefty stroke from deep.
Fairfield's going to be physical between the experienced guards
and their two main bigs—Cook and Chris Maidoh. Maidoh is the
springier of the two, but Cook is a little thicker and a bigger
offensive threat. I just think he was such a good get for this
program—a rock in the middle. They have a third contributor in
6-9 Zach Crisler. Collectively, Fairfield outmuscled Sacred
Heart only a few days ago—45-33 rebounding edge, 12-2 second
chance points.
So if you're keeping score, we're going in with a probably
compromised Sayles, a possibly inactive Olaniyi (quick
turnaround), and a bunch of guys who are going to go up against
that size. Gulp is right. Against this same lineup last year, we
got outrebounded 48-38 with Gueye and a healthy Sayles AND with
Greene going all out and grabbing 12 boards. So I don't see why
it'll be any different and could/should be worse. I know I harp
on it, but the inability to rebound is just impossible to
overlook.
Yes yes yes, we've faced a couple tough teams already. I get
that. And it's a small sample size. But check out where we rank
nationally in some key categories (out of 350 teams):
341st in rebounding margin (-10.7)
344th in assists/game (7.7)
345th in FG% defense (.516)
We're also in the 300s in scoring offense, scoring defense,
assist/turnover ratio and field goal percentage. And the other
stats? Not much better. I wish I had good news for you.
We are really fortunate that Roberts hit that shot last night.
Based on the performance though, I don't know that I'd bet the
farm on any of these other games besides Farmingdale. Certainly
not this one, especially if Elijah sits (no help from Newsday on
his injury status). I've got Fairfield in this one by at least a
half dozen.

Really solid write-up, Checkmate.
What’s wrong with Sayles? Still ailing or RE-injury? And do we
know what’s going on with Olaniyi? Nothing on Twitter, but Pav
on espn mentioned that he was favoring his right knee. I cringe
when I hear knee.
If Sayles/Olaniyi out, I’m thinking that Christie has to get
5-10 mins, no?

Just a heads up, I swear this game was slated for 4pm, but I see
now that it tips at 2.
Early line is Fairfield -3.5.

Speaking of Christie. I didn't see him on the team bench the
other day. Is he still with SBU??

He's still on roster on website. Injured or Covid protocol
maybe? Or maybe he quit? Or maybe they threw him off the team
for being 8" taller than the avg player on the team?
Hope he's OK.

So Christie back. Roberts didn’t start; TSM did. Elijah with
knee injury, but away announcers without any detail.
