OK, here's one we really should get if we're in fact going to
contend in the AE this year. Our opponents have been tough, but
I wish we were better than -51 on the year after two games.
This is evidently the Stony Brook Classic, which I believe is
code for "we had three teams without a preseason tournament so
let's play a round robin and call it something."
The three teams are very similar—very much undersized, and that
puts an emphasis on perimeter shooting, the guards' ability to
compete on the boards, and just guts sometimes. With Sacred
Heart, I think we're going to see lineups with three and even
four guys 6-3 or under. Thomas, Clarke and Watson play big
minutes, but none is this tremendous athlete, and reinforcements
like Sixsmith and Joey Reilly are even more diminutive. It puts
a huge burden on Galette, Bryce Johnson and Cantavio Dutreil on
the glass. Sacred Heart was +9 on the glass in their surprising
win at A-10 patzer La Salle, but they've been in the red against
their other three D-1 opponents, including Binghamton, which won
at SHU by 12.
They do have a Long Island kid who will play meaningful
minutes—Sixsmith from Hicksville and Holy Trinity. He has some
ability going to the basket, but he's pretty much out there to
shoot threes. And boy does he. Sixsmith shot 54 percent from
deep last year, and is off to a good start again at .412.
An All-NEC preseason selection, Thomas is their lead guy and
he's put up big numbers (i.e. 24 in beating La Salle, 23 in a
loss to Bingo). But he's not this lights-out perimeter shooter
nor is he an athlete who's going to get a clean look every time
by going by or over anybody. We've had individuals performances
ruin our night before, but if he's Elijah's assignment, I think
he can be kept at bay. Alongside him, Clarke's an important
piece who helped SHU beat La Salle before suffering an ankle
injury. He came back in the Fairfield game to form what's a
pretty good combo in the NEC. Downhill kind of guard.
Flashback: Some of you may remember Sacred Heart as a D-II power
back in the '70s and '80s, having reached the Final Four in '77
and then winning the national title in 1986. They've been pretty
steady in the NEC of late under Anthony Latina, who took over
the reins after a run as an assistant and has finished at or
above .500 in five of the last seven seasons. No NCAA tournament
berths, but they've won a bunch of games, and based on preseason
rankings, they're expected to be around .500 again this with 15
returnees.
Talking about Monday's contest, I really think we're going to be
able to keep their guards in front of us, and I also think
there's a good chance that our bigger, thicker wings are going
to win us the rebounding battle. SHU isn't quite as physical as
Fairfield, who we'll see Wednesday. On top of that, I think our
secondary pieces have a little more firepower than SHU—JRod,
Roberts, Greene, Sayles—just a slight edge there. That said,
let's see if we can get Jenkins and Elijah on track. They've
been quiet these first two games, but I think they'll start to
really take off in this stretch of winnable games for us.
As a whole, we have a run in us. However, the list of upcoming
opponents might not seem daunting, but we get a tournament team
(Fairfield), the favorite in the Ivy (Yale), the favorite in the
NEC (Wagner), two predicted runners-up in the NEC and MAAC
(Bryant and St. Peter's), typically tough Hofstra, and then of
course Florida. GOOD tests for us, guys. I'm looking forward to
it.

Hope to see some offensive growth tonight and a plan the team
needs to build some confidence. This is a great chance to do it

Looks like that genius game time change to 6:30 keeping fans
away. The arena looks 2/3 empty.

I’ve never been a fan of the VIP Area. People hide there instead
of going to their seats. It makes attendance look much worse.

some of our guys need to calm down with the ball. literally
right over the midline and just firing long bricks at the glass.
no looking to distribute or penetrate, just me me me, get rich
quick, but lose. every time.

I only had one eye on this one tonight, but happy to get out of
there with the W. Five guys in double figures, some big shots
and some big stops. I thought we were doomed there late, but an
8-0 run to end it.
We got our butts beat on the glass, and every time the ball came
off the rim, it felt like Tykei was the one going up for it. 14
enormous rebounds for him. Just an awesome game.
On the postgame, Geno said they were taking way too many zero-
and one-pass shots. I’m glad he at least recognizes that that
area needs improvement. I did see glimpses of going inside-out
in the first half, even where we were passing up open threes.
The last possession, though, was hideous but Roberts rescued us.
Really happy for Policelli. Huge three to get us closer late in
the game. Jenkins with a big one to tie it. To do it without
Elijah was surprising, and I’m hoping he’s all right.
