Next-day thoughts:
Our inefficiency on offense (and overall success) in the first
half was masked by a higher-than-average shooting percentage on
low percentage shots. I realize we can't pound it inside because
of personnel and the opponent, but it's less about the number of
threes than the kind of threes. I do like that we took the air
out of the ball (good) and shots went in (also good) but there
was very little offensive rhythm. Then in the second half, we
came back to earth, they went into orbit, and I think you could
see the body language suffer (understandably so). More than
anything, I'm happy with our energy. We played really hard
against a really talented and really deep team. Loved their bigs
and loved their guards, and that's without getting anything from
Remy Martin yesterday. That kid Pettiford is going to be a
problem in the Big 12. He's a bowling ball like Khalid El-Amin.
The KU announcers talked about how competitive practice must be
there and they're right. All these guys battling for minutes.
I expect the energy though—it's the biggest game of their lives!
I do applaud the guys' poise under pressure. The lack of
creativity on offense is nevertheless discouraging. With no post
presence and no movement, are we just doing isos and launching
threes off the dribble? I wish we could just say "that's today's
basketball for you" and to be fair that's some of it. And
granted, we've faced two higher-end undefeated teams and have
two opponents more on our level next week. The guy in charge has
to be better.
Happy for Shumpert. He'll always be able to say his first points
were two threes at Phog Allen Fieldhouse. Good looking shot.
Tough night for Policelli and Jenkins. I'm hoping that each gets
some swagger back next week.
DNP for Christie. Coach's decision? I think it's safe to say he
won't be a factor this year. I'm not sure what's up with TSM
either. Hurt?
I challenge the SBU student section to come up with something as
cool as the debilitating game-long "airball" chant. It's like
the ball four thing that the Texas A&M baseball crowd does.

good points; this is not representative of what we are up
against this year, and even if it was, that's just one early
season outing, far away in a hostile environment.
you really could see that when pressed on the perimeter, we
really moved the ball, like an ACC team does. so id like more
of that, please!
sayles might still be a bit hurt (broken finger i think?).

The SBU student section has gone way downhill since the
Warney/Pritchard days. In the few games I went to, there were
some where it wasn’t full. What they need is another student
leader there – one who will create the witty chants and set a
raucous atmosphere. Sadly it feels like the official demography
of the school is changing in the wrong way.

Policelli, Sayles, Habwe all coming back from injuries so it
will take time really feel like if they play to their strengths
and show what they did in spurts last year. That will unlock the
ceiling for this team. I still don’t love the lack of an
offensive plan I want to see us speed it up the offense runs
better that way especially since we run 4 guards. But all the
guys battled I appreciate that.

I'm concerned that the offense is not running through Olaniyi,
who IMO, is the best player on the team. Jenkins and Roberts
are definitely athletic, but I'm not at all for the
shoot-first-dont-think-about-passing PG play of these 2. Maybe
it's me, but I thought Olaniyi's body language said it all, when
these 2 guys rarely looked for him. I don't think he came back
to Stony Brook to be the 3rd option on offense.
Also, I'm not a big fan of Policelli as a player, and would like
to see more bench time for him. Would love to see his +/- over
the last season plus, but couldn't find it on KenPom; I'm
guessing very negative. Maybe Payton Shumpert can get some of
his time; small sample set, but his 2 shots were smooth as silk
yesterday. They are both listed at 6'7".

Game 2 seemed like more of the same as Game 1, which is really
disheartening. I think Iso-Ball is a great option, especially
with these players, but it's just that: an option. At the
college level, where the skill level (and shot making) isn't as
high as the NBA, you're going to need collective synergy to
generate opportunities. And I'm not seeing any of that. All I'm
seeing is Iso-Ball as the offense, not an option. My turn, your
turn, my turn, your turn. And it's really disappointing.
Some Pistol actions would be nice at the very least.

I dont think policelli is the biggest problem out there he is
getting around 15 minutes a game and was a -8 last night. Habwe
who i felt played well was -25 in the same amount of time so +-
is a flawed stat in general. A lot of the guys on the team right
now don’t look good because currently this is not a good team.
Policelli had a hot start to last season hopefully he regains
form.
I think the biggest problem is Olaniyi being the third option
and the stagnation on offense. With that being said its two
games against two very good teams I think this team will look a
lot different towards conference play if Geno can craft an
offense and thats what he gets paid to do.

You’re not going to beat this freakishly stronger Kansas team
inside so I get it. If this continues after these two teams then
i have a huge problem.
Policelli looked like such a stud in his first 10 or so games
here. Not sure if injury or teams just adjusting to him, but
he’s even bricking easy shots. That’s why they hollered at him
all night. He never shut them up.

all of the above is true.
ola near the end of the game was open on the bottom right of the
screen and was waving his arms in anger and frustration because
no one even looked in his direction.
so, same as last year. and the year before. doesnt matter who
the players are.
PASS THE BALL
PS- the other half of me thought last night, this doesnt matter.
beating KU gets us what, some attention? wont get us in the
NCAAs. wont win us the AE. momentum? hard to keep that up for
the next 5 months, given all the stop and go with bball. might
get better recruits for a short blip. but i'm not sure
recruiting is the issue.
