They're a household name in college basketball, so you should
know that we're up against it here.
I do find it interesting how this team is made up. Bill Self is
doing it with, lo and behold, upperclassmen. And like the rest
of us, transfers. Martin was an All-Pac 12 pick three times at
Arizona State before arriving as arguably the top transfer in
the country. Jalen Coleman-Lands, a legit three point threat,
moved from Iowa State to Kansas in the offseason. McCormack has
steadily climbed into a starring role for KU. Meanwhile,
Agbaji's been outstanding from the start, and after earning his
undergraduate degree, he's working on his grad degree and his
draft stock at the same time. I give him credit. It really is a
hodgepodge of talent.
As has been typical with KU of late, it's not like there's a ton
of legit NBA talent on this team. Agbaji's the only one in
NBADraft.net's 2022 mock, and 2022 commit Gradey Dick is a mid
first rounder in the 2023 draft. Remember—this is Kansas. Even
in the NBA now, you have Joel Embiid, Andrew Wiggins, I guess
Kelly Oubre and Devonte Graham. That's actually better than I
thought it'd be. In the last five years though, KU has only had
two first rounders (Josh Jackson and Udoka Azubuike). By
contrast, Kentucky has 11 and Duke has 10 in that span.
Going back to Agbaji, you're really going to appreciate him.
Solid physically. Beautiful jumper. Will drop threes in your eye
and then take it to the rack and finish at or above the rim,
even with contact. He's off to a good start shooting it, which
seems to be the knock. I see him as a Justise Winslow type, a
better version of Obadiah Noel for the AE folks. He's going to
be a problem on Thursday but a good assignment for Elijah.
Martin's a really awesome complement. 1700+ points at ASU. It's
just a really tough tandem—probably the top starting backcourt
in the country. And that's a great place to start when you're
trying to cut down some nets this spring. Unfortunately, that's
the one place where I think we'll have an advantage on more or
less the rest of our opponents. Just not Kansas.
KU can really go about this any way it wants though really. I
still think one of the guards paces the team, but I could also
see a 20-and-10 night from McCormack with a size and athleticism
advantage on anybody we have down there. Unfortunately, after
him, you know they're trotting out nothing but three- and
four-star guys.
We all know we're comparing apples and oranges here. I think we
all know what the result's going to be. I just want to see team
basketball, good ball movement, good looks from deep, a
willingness to draw contact inside and get to the line, effort
on the glass and in closing out shooters, all that. This is not
the time for hero ball, which I think is what plagued us against
George Mason. I'm really hoping that we see Sayles more, either
shooting at the elbow or using that as a pivot point. We need
him; he's the only guy who has a chance against McCormack and
the other behemoths. Can our guards really help at all and leave
the shooters?
We're going to need to gang rebound and hopefully get some
second chances, which won't be easy to come by. We've seen it
before with small lineups—we killed South Carolina on the glass
with Akwasi, Elijah and company. We were right there with teams
like Providence and St. John's. None of them are Kansas, but
hopefully we scrape and claw and it's not just a one-and-done on
our end and endless possessions on theirs.
Whatever happens, it's going to be a really cool experience for
the guys. I've never been to Cameron Indoor, but can't imagine
that Allen Fieldhouse is far behind, if at all. Magical place.

23.5 points at Kansas, the #3 team in the nation? That's an
easy cover for Kansas. I'd be more inclined to set the spread
at -38.
Based on Ford's most recent comments (see 2021-2022 thread),
it's gonna be bombs away again, from the opening whistle.

all true- but you know how these go. usually, we'll hang around
for just under a half, maybe down 7 at the break. just enough
to believe. then they'll pull away and we'll lose by 25 by the
end of the night, with the B team running up stats. the kind
where the bench is jumping up and down because their 13th player
dunks on us.

Setting the line is sort of a game. I set it based on what I
think it'll be, not really what I think the result will be. Then
I check the KenPom projected score, which is usually spot on
with what Vegas puts out. It'll be at or around 25 points,
guaranteed.
If I had to bet, I'd lay the points. Just too much size and
shooting. But I also think we have veteran guards who won't be
completely overwhelmed by Agbaji and Martin, or playing at Allen
Fieldhouse in general. So maybe we keep it under 20.

I’ve been thinking about how to approach this tomorrow—not
really what it’ll take to win but how we can be successful.
Our guards should hold their own, especially Jenkins and Elijah.
They’ve been in a lot of battles. Offensively, while we have
been led to believe we’re going to be in the 80s, I’d rather see
us work the ball around, work the clock, and find an open shot.
More in the 60s than the 80s. Not exactly a novel concept, but
we saw a lot of one-on-one, a lot of poor shots and early in the
clock against GMU, and those are just lazy possessions. We
cannot stay with Kansas player for player, but let’s get the
defense moving their feet and see what happens.
All this said, I would advise against making it a track meet,
but we should be opportunistic with getting out into transition.
If it’s not there, get into our offense (if one exists).
Also gotta gang rebound, especially on the defensive glass.

its entirely possible that with KU's size, they may only give us
three pointers.
in fact, if i was ANY opponent of SB (particularly AE foes), id
do the same. look at our stats, year, after year, after year.
or scout one game.
so if we get good looks, a decent % to fall, maybe we have a
chance. upsets often happen on such stats. GO SB

His prediction is KU, 90-58. Yeesh.
I think this game's more about our secondary guys than Jenkins
and Olaniyi. They're gonna get theirs. But will Policelli make
some shots? Will Roberts? Will Sayles be a factor on both ends
of the floor? Will guys like Greene and Habwe have success
crashing the glass and getting a few second-chance
opportunities?
If it's Jenkins trying to do it himself or forcing threes early
in the possession, we're dead. He had an 11-assist game in
February. I'd love to see that side of him.

I have a feeling this is going to get really ugly, but as long
as we look somewhat competitive at times I'll be fine with the
outcome. This is Kansas we're talking about.
