Verbal abuse of the players behind closed doors. In public GF is
a nice, calm, individual, but when there's no one around, he's
not so nice. There are a couple of instances that I will
not/cannot expand upon, which had been brought to the attention
of the administration. He lobbied the players to beg SH to give
him the job, and once he got it, kicked all of the players out
of the locker room, threw out all their stuff, and told them no
one could go in. Turned his back on the same people he begged to
beg someone else. He'll stab you in the back if it means getting
something.

Verbal abuse of the players behind closed doors. In public GF is
a nice, calm, individual, but when there's no one around, he's
not so nice. There are a couple of instances that I will
not/cannot expand upon, which had been brought to the attention
of the administration. He lobbied the players to beg SH to give
him the job, and once he got it, kicked all of the players out
of the locker room, threw out all their stuff, and told them no
one could go in. Turned his back on the same people he begged to
beg someone else. He'll stab you in the back if it means getting
something.

Makes sense - like I said earlier I've always thought Geno was a
bit slimy based on how he tried to weasel out of paying his Kent
State buyout (he got sued for it, and lost). But players talk
amongst themselves. Either this behavior is more normalized
across college basketball in the entire country, or he's done
well at making sure his players don't badmouth him in private,
or some other factor, I have no idea. It's just shocking me to
that Geno was able to convince these transfers to still play for
him, especially Jenkins, who people thought could land somewhere
higher than Stony Brook, with all these bad things connected to
his image as a coach and a person. And if Olaniyi experienced
this first hand, why would he still choose to come back?

The interesting thing is, neither Roberts nor Jenkins publicly
acknowledged holding offers from other schools once they decided
to transfer, despite both having excellent play on tape. I'm
going to try and dig into that a little, but if anyone has any
info on that, by all means, please share if you can.
As for Elijah Olaniyi, he didn't receive offers from big-time
programs, like he expected to. SBU came calling and it was more
of a, I can't go back to Miami, at least SBU is familiar, type
situation.

Sure, SBU has a much better educational rep than St. Bonnie or
FDU. Also, AE is a step-up from NEC in basketball, although not
a major jump. Regarding Elijah coming home, here's my theory:
he played OK for a very poor ACC team; nothing that stands out.
Also, he's seen PoY Anthony Lamb make it to the NBA (for those
not following, he was recently called up by the Houston Rockets
from the G league). I think in Elijah's mind, he comes back to
the AE, wins PoY, and then has a clearer path to the G League or
better exposure to playing in Europe.

It's entirely possible that most head coaches at the D1 level
are just assholes. Tom Izzo is notoriously very hard on his
players, Bob Knight was obviously, people still choose to play
for Rick Pitino, etc, the only difference is those coaches are
some of the greatest of all time, which Geno is nowhere near.
If you’re Heilbron, you’d have to almost want Geno to do
something so awful that you could fire him for so that SBU isn’t
stuck with him until 2024. I’m sure there’s some clause in his
contract about that. He’s clearly not getting it done
resultswise so there’s no reason for him to stay around on that.
I’m guessing nothings gotten too extreme a level yet.

While two players announced today they would be returning to
Miami, something has been going on in that locker room over the
last couple of years and players have been leaving in droves.
Jim larrañaga is a great coach but is a little stuck in the old
guard mentality, like Boehim and others, and are not fans of one
and done, or players constantly transferring. Understandable,
but that also rubs players the wrong way. Now I wasn't given
specifics but spoke to a couple of people who cover Florida
basketball (the state, not the school) and none of them were
shocked Olaniyi didn't go back to Miami and went down in the
conference ranks.
