I think this is where I'm supposed to write about how it's hard
to beat a team three times in one season. But we beat Albany
three times last year, and Hartford beat us three times, the
last defeat ending our season. The year before that – what do
you know? – we handled Binghamton twice in the regular season
and they embarrassed us in the conference tournament. So choose
to believe what you wish.
Lowell has been an also-ran in this league for a long time, but
they're no longer this team in transition still trying to find
its way. They stumbled a bit at the end, but did score wins over
UNH and Albany without Noel, who has missed the last five games
with the dreaded "undisclosed injury." Still no word on whether
he'll be ready for next weekend. UML handled itself well without
him. It'll be interesting to see, with a year of eligibility,
whether he tries to go pro, play a year at a bigger school, or
stay at UML to get a statue #exaggeration. I think the odds on
that last one are low. Too small of a pond, and when you see our
guys and Sessoms and others getting real playing time elsewhere,
he has to know he'd go and play someplace.
Is Noel a shoo-in for the AE POY? He missed the last five games,
and his team finished sixth. Meanwhile, Ryan Davis is a big
reason why UVM bounced back from a slow start to finish second.
He's the AE top scorer among qualifiers, and also was tops in
FG%. Does Noel get it not only for his production when healthy
but as a career award kind of thing? I could see it.
Who's all-conference for us? I think Gueye sneaks onto the third
team at 10 points, 7 boards and nearly 3 blocks a night. JFR
just on the outside. He's been key all year, especially of late.
Bouncing around here ...
Let's look at how we did it back in December. In both games,
Noel feasted on us, going for 30 and 29 in back to back days. He
killed us from the floor in game one, and from the line in game
two. After him though ... no one person really stepped up as his
sidekick. I think the big thing was keeping Withers at bay. He
was in the running for all-conference honors IMO after a good
freshman year, but we limited him to just eight points in the
two games. He's gone for double figures in all but two games
since. Noel's time on the sidelines can almost be looked at as a
blessing. Withers has been steady, Daley had 18 and 17 points in
wins over UNH and Albany, and Kalil Thomas, who barely played
against us, has been a really solid secondary scoring option in
the latter half of conference play.
This is not a team that I think it going to put all their chips
on knocking down threes (aaaand nor should we). Lowell ranked
last in the league in three-point attempts at just over 17 a
night, and made them at a league best 36.3% of them. With Noel
out there though, I think they're going to try to be aggressive
and take high-quality shots while getting on the glass. BUT ...
it is how they beat Vermont, namely behind Ron Mitchell (24
pts), who barely plays now oddly enough. I think our numbers
defending the three are skewed a bit. Take out the two Hartford
games where they shot 6 for 48 – I know, we're taking away full
games now? – but anyway, opponents made over 35 percent of
threes in the other 14 games. And I thought Hartford got good
looks and just plain missed them (and still won).
Gueye struggled with foul trouble early in the season, but he's
been considerably better of late. I think his presence
underneath is enormous – as it always is, but if he can play
freely, what a difference that makes. We've gone deeper into our
bench, with TSM playing major minutes, McKenzie getting after it
a bit, even TPP.
The key for us these last couple weeks has been toughness. I
feel like Greene personifies the team a bit – not this 30 ppg
guy, maybe it isn't pretty all the time, but he's going to
compete. We need that kind of attitude here again. That said,
the ball's gotta go in the hoop. We shot better than 40 percent
from the floor in 12 of our first 13 games. In the final nine?
It's happened once. And you've seen the results.
#scoutingreports
One last point that I want to bring up. Lowell played at
Lundholm twice just two weeks ago, and with that experience, and
a fairly experienced group in general, they know the gym a lot
better than our guys who will be walking in there for the first
time. Granted, all of the arenas we went into this year were new
to us – and TSM lit it up at UNH last year! – but it's a slight
edge in a game that feels like a toss-up.
I'm looking forward to it. Go SBU.

Excellent preview, Checkmate. With or without Noel, it’ll be a
tough game for us. As you stated, they’ve risen to the occasion
w/o Noel, which sometimes happens when the Star isn’t there.
Game is at 1 pm on Sat. Does anyone know what Habwe’s status
is???

Lowell Sun writer says that Noel is a go for UML.
ICYMI, a real nice interview with Gueye.

Interior defense really making a difference so far. Gueye and
Sayles altering shots and we’re dominating the glass. Noel
scoreless.
The early threes are nice but let’s be aggressive too.

Need to attack rim, and not get 3-happy, despite our success. D
looking pretty good so far.

Blowing it. Policelli needs to sit. Missed board and air ball 3.
I’ve seen enough.

That’s really too bad. Up two, with the ball, Policelli gets
stripped and commits the foul. A nice play by Blunt – not even
blaming Policelli – but just a shame to cough it up with a
chance to go up by two possessions.
