I think we all thought that when Anthony Lamb finally left, and
when Vermont started the year 3-3, that maybe this was the year
they came back to earth. They went 59-5 in conference the last
four years, and have never had fewer than 11 AE wins in any
season under Becker. And I do think they'll have their hands
full in staving off UMBC, but rumors of UVM's demise are greatly
exaggerated.
I don't know that we can put them in the same class as the Lamb
teams or the Coppenrath teams, but they'll be right there at the
end. They found their footing in mid January by absolutely
bludgeoning Binghamton and Maine, but then the dreaded pause
hit, and here we are in mid February and UVM will not have
played in a month by the time we go up there. That, I believe,
is our lone advantage here unfortunately.
So the assumption was that Stef Smith was going to take the
baton from Lamb and morph into this alpha dog, but it hasn't
quite gone like that. His shooting numbers are way down, but the
good news is that he has a talented veteran lineup around him.
And the bad news for the league is ... Smith's too good to just
struggle the whole year offensively. Right? This is a guy who
hit 80 threes a year ago at a 42% clip. But then again, the
dropoff is eeeeeerily similar to Lamb's senior season when his
percentages dipped to .411/.293. We'll see.
The rest of the cast is STRONG. Mazzulla came over from GW, and
can do a little bit of everything. Powell has gone from a spare
part to a really solid tertiary scorer, but the real story is
Davis. I think UVM fans kind of waited for this to happen – he
won AE Sixth Man honors last year – but also that this jump far
exceeded their expectations. After missing the first few games,
he's been terrific, scoring at all three levels. I think the
development from three is most surprising, at least at this
level of proficiency. He has a little Brandon Horvath in him –
really good offensively, not somebody who's going to clean the
glass or win DPOY. He's just a prototypical Vermont kid, some
Midwest kid who was magically overlooked by higher level
programs in the area and somehow ends up in Vermont. I dunno.
You got me there.
An aside: Looking back to earlier in the decade, I wonder how
many former D-I players can say they rank #1 in rebounds and
assists at their program. Might Brian Voelkel be the only one?
He was an ironman of course. It will take some kind of
career—and commitment—to upend him.
I really don't see how we stay in these games. Truly. It sounds
as though Policelli is a no-go, which probably makes every
defender take a step back to welcome the three and discourage
anything inside. But maybe we respond by closing out on their
shooters and limit them to one shot. The problem is they have
shooters in droves, ranking first in the conference in FG% and
second behind only Lowell in threes. They can defend too. Just
ask Maine and Binghamton, who could only muster an average of 49
points a night in UVM's last four games before the pause.
Just schedule a few things so you can enjoy your weekend ...
because I sincerely doubt these games will bring you much joy.

I haven't watched a single one of our basketball games this year
and I don't think I'll start now.

Sayles hit with a Flagrant 1 for elbowing a UVM player in the
face. Didn't look intentional, but that's not good.

Took it hard to the rim 3 times in a row. Why can’t they do that
every possession, as opposed to weaving around 3 pt circle?

Played our best game in last 5, despite the loss. Uvm moves ball
so much better than we do; always finding the open man. They
also shot 58% from the field, which was the difference.

While I'm reminded of Jim Mora, I still think this team is
capable of making a run in the conference tournament.
