What a difference Sunday was for us. After the dismal
performance on Saturday, and the two Ls at home against UNH, I
don't think our expectations were very high in the rematch with
NJIT. Although it was pretty hideous – with the whole 1 for 19
effort from three and all – it was nevertheless crucial to keep
us near to the top of the AE.
Now we run into a team that, frankly, owned us last year,
sweeping all three games and ousting us from the AE tournament
before it was eventually called off. We all thought that we'd
come out firing in the third and final game, but it was more of
the same. We were especially hapless from three, going 14 for 73
from deep for the year against Hartford.
And they'll be tough again – even without Malik Ellison, and as
of a few weeks ago, Moses Flowers, who evidently had
season-ending surgery after a nice start. He did tail off a bit,
but I thought he had first team potential. Still young. He'll be
       back.
The Hawks luckily have a good stable of guards who can fill that
void. Austin Williams was a bit player at Marist for two seasons
before emerging as a star for Hartford. He's ratcheted up his
assertiveness on offense in Flowers' absence, averaging nearly
14 points a night in conference play. I like his game – he can
knock down the jumper but is very aggressive going to the
basket. With a lack of depth, Gallagher has these guys playing
MAJOR minutes. Williams has played all 40 in the last three
games, Carter's hit 40 a few times, and DJ Mitchell, who has
killed us in the past, has stepped into Flowers' starting role
and done a really nice job. He had some key buckets in the
conference semis for them, and as you see, has continued to be
deadly from three. Marks was 5 for 6 in that game from deep.
I'd really love to see us break out of our shooting funk, but
sometimes you just don't have the horses. So let's do what seems
to produce the best results and what really is our identity –
Sayles (this year's AE POW) on the interior, Gueye facing the
basket and attacking, JRod creating with the dribble, and hard
work on the glass. By now, the shooting drought has to be on
Policelli's mind, but the way the coaches talked about his
shooting and based on what we've seen in spurts this year, you
have to believe it will level out to a degree. Catch and shoot
situations not from 32 feet out – I want to see them!
I liked this Hartford team a little better with Flowers, but 4-2
without him ain't bad, and that includes a win at UMBC. They're
on a two-week hiatus, which I'm not sure is helpful or hurtful.
I really want to get the first one so we can see whether our
physical play means tired legs on Sunday for a team that may go
only seven deep. We HAVE to close out on threes, which burned us
in losses to UNH and NJIT.
Worth noting: a nice stretch for Gueye in the minutes column. By
staying out of foul trouble, he's played 28-plus minutes in four
straight games. Really good to see. We need him out there.

Can’t be thrilled being up only three with Hartford shooting
1-12 from three. They’ll connect here soon.
Gueye on his way to a triple double.

Gueye having a monster game. Time to shutdown Policelli; can’t
hit the side of a barn.

What an easily winnable game blown juan with a costly turnover
and sayles a missed ft and policelli a wide open look that went
       in and out. Pathetic.
