Geno needs a kick in the butt and an OC. Their defense played
hard most of the game, and played fairly well. Their offense
looks like an intramural team weaving around the 3 pt circle,
invariably settling for poor out of rhythm shot selection.
Again, when you have a team that has no real shooters, you run a
motion offense, with lots of passing, picks, screens, and drives
to the hole. Umbc has a solid defensive team, but no excuse for
how we run our inept offense.

Forget the new field house, the next fund raiser should be to
raise enough dough to get Pikiell back.

We're the worst three-point shooting team in the conference, and
rank 323rd out of 347 teams nationally. As I've said, I think
much of the blame can go on the personnel – we just don't have
many shooters – but we're also getting a lot of contested looks.
Two shots actually come to mind for me and it was against
Hartford – PJ Henry in the corner, miss, offensive rebound, back
to Henry, and he missed again. Never mind the result. We never
get wide open catch-and-shoot opportunities like that, from guys
we want to shoot. Rogers got into the teeth of the defense and
kicked it out. Carter did the same for Hartford. I'd love to see
what our guys could do with rhythm threes. Like, I don't even
see people coming around screens or running the baseline to get
looks in the corner. The ones we get are too often off the
dribble or with a hand in our face.
Some number crunching: We get .88 points per three attempt,
versus .97 per two. Neither is good. UMBC by contrast is at .99
point per three, and over a point per two attempt. Our
tournament team in 2015-16 was 1.11 per three, and 1.02 per two.
It's just a bad offensive team. And truthfully we're not exactly
fun to watch. At least UMBC looks like they have a plan and move
the ball.
All that said, I did appreciate the effort in the second half. I
thought we were going to go away quietly, but Greene was
everywhere, TSM too. Not bad. Although there was a time late in
the game, with the score close, where we had Mac, TSM, TPP, JRod
and Gueye on the floor. Weird weird five.

Have to kick Geno Ford to the curb first.
Everybody from Bowls squad departed after he left for a reason.
There must be something players dont like about Ford. Is it his
coaching style? Maybe he doesn't resonate well with the players?
I have no idea. But this program, just like the football program
will be stuck in the mud for years with this current coaching
staff.
The time is now for Helibron to grow a pair of balls, stop with
all the positive, motivational quotes and get some real coaches
into the programs that need it the most and know how to recruit.
Like Joe Spallina. I am really shocked that Joe Spallina is
still on board. Must be because his kids love Long Island and
built roots around here.

Let's just say Geno made the players lobby for him to become HC,
and then once he did, turned his back on them. At the time,
there was a rumor Akwasi wanted Geno, but that couldn't have
been further from the truth. He hated Geno, and with that, it
went from less than 10% chance he came back to gone.

Damn!!! I've been out of the circle for a while now, and didnt
hear that. What a dic%$ thing to do. The sad thing about SB is.
They dont have the funds to fire an HC at will, regardless of
how bad they are. It is easy just to give them a new contract
and hope for the best.

You can blame Geno all you want. The bottom line is this team
has zero talent. You cannot win at this level with juco's and
transfers. Everybody left, and there was no choice but to
rebuild this way. Add a pandemic to the mix and this was never
going to be a successful year. Just have to retool, get a big
freshman class and start from the ground floor. I don't think
we can evaluate Geno until there is some talent who can actually
play a bit.

Another miserable day. Truthfully, I forgot the game was even on
– you just don't think about Monday day games being a thing.
8 for 25 from three, 8 for 25 from two. That's all you need to
know about where we are offensively. We failed to break 50 in
conference for the first time since a 57-49 loss at UMBC in
2019. Before that you have to go back to a six-game stretch
where we finished in the 40s three times in 2015.
Another nice effort from Gueye. With his newfound touch from
deep, he is now our second-best three-point shooter behind
Policelli. Four three attempts from Mac today. I didn't see the
game so I don't know the context, but I just can't imagine a
system that would require that from him when it's obviously not
his forte.
Vermont next week. Albany after that.

We played awful again. Mac started and missed a bunch of 3's.
We missed 3 bunnies in a row, early in the 1st half, and that
pretty much sealed our fate. We probably missed 6 buckets right
under the rim today, and everything else was a long range miss.
Sayles and Greene are totally lost. Mo the only one playing,
but he doesn't have enough of a supporting cast, to be The Man.
UMBC has much more talent, and is coached a heck of a lot
better. Sigh.
One nugget from Johnny Wincott today that I was not aware
of........all seniors in D1 winter sports automatically get
another year of eligibility, so there's a chance that Mo,
Sayles, and Habwe may still be in uniform next season.
