This race in the AE is about as close as you're ever going to
see it, with two games separating first and seventh. It only
puts these next two weekends under the microscope as we, sitting
in third, go up against the two teams ahead of us.
As I said in the preview that wasn't, UMBC's really old and
really balanced. Geno called them the best team in the league,
which is saying something the way that Vermont is going. Horvath
and Akin are holdovers from the Cinderella tournament team, and
it's Horvath who has really developed from being a role player
into their bonafide number one option. He's great because he can
obviously shoot it, but he'll also keep defenses honest by
putting it on the floor and also posting up. Akin's more of a
garbage guy, and we can't overlook Dimitrije Spasojevic, another
veteran who's comfortable on the block – as evidenced by his
17-point night against us last year. He was key this past
weekend as Horvath battled foul trouble and ultimately fouled
out in their win on Tuesday. Spaz had 13 and 7 in that one.
In the backcourt, I like Eytle-Rock's game too – physical guard,
hard-nosed, will take contact, and can also shoot it. He was
huge down the stretch on Tuesday with two enormous three-point
plays, as was Rogers, the smallest player in history to earn a
D-I scholarship. And UMBC was really in danger of getting swept.
Instead, those guys helped them salvage the split and stay atop
       the AE.
NJIT beat these guys on Sunday by dominating the points in the
paint column by an astounding 42-16 margin. It wasn't like they
were feeding guys in the post. It was Cooks and O'Hearn and
Brinson going on the offensive. Without Daniel Akin, protection
at the rim is pretty minimal, yet I don't know that we have the
kind of guys who are going to attack the rack. I like that we're
going test them on the boards, including with our guards. Bingo
was +19 in their surprise win earlier this year.
I do think we'll miss Policelli if he can't go for some reason
between his shooting, and his role as a small ball 5 on the
boards and defensively. I'm glad that LES found his footing. We
have a bunch of junkyard type of guys between LES, Habwe, Greene
and some Diallo – not really high flyers but you can't question
their appetite. Maybe there will be more time for Diallo this
       weekend too.
If we split the next four games, that's a whale of a stretch.
Anything over that just plain incredible.

Wow, I hate this schedule change. As in, I really hate this
       schedule change.
I mentioned this earlier but I am so f'ing angry that we were
forced into a COVID break. Horvath was injured and not going to
play in the series when it was originally scheduled. Then, we
would have taken on an injured Albany with Healy and Lulka out.
The two home games against UNH would have been cupcakes after
       that.
Instead, we took TWO losses against a flimsy team that we
normally beat handily. How embarrassing. I have no doubt that it
was because they were forced into a break that they played so
messily. We still need more game practice before we're ready to
play UMBC: a road set at NJIT would have been perfect prep for
       this. F me.

       Oy. What a circus.
I’ll throw something together and bank this one for whenever
       that happens.

With virus cases rising and more transmissible strains like the
UK and South African strain out there, safe to say most teams
are unlikely to finish the season. I'd forget any hopes of
       Spring football either.

Wednesday has us not going to NJIT this weekend but rather
hosting the team that is right there with Vermont as
frontrunners to win the conference bid in March.
       >
       > There's no soft landing spot for us after a humbling weekend
against a solid but unspectacular UNH team. And now in comes a
UMBC squad that is going to make us grind for every point once
again, and we're going to have to really play better if we're
       expecting different results.
       >
       > Are we going to see a marked improvement offensively, our work
on the glass, closing out on threes, etc.? Can we really give
ourselves a pass because of the break? I'm not so sure. The
first part of that really stuck out for me. We had no flow
offensively – bad shots, not enough ball movement, not enough
cuts, issues with turnovers. It reminded me of a game we
actually won against Fairfield where it felt like total gridlock
the whole time. 45 and 47 shot attempts? We've only been down
that low against especially stingy teams like Virginia and
Manhattan. To UNH's credit, they kept us off the offensive
glass, and that's a place where we feasted on flimsier teams
       (see Bingo and Lowell).
       >
       > I really thought that UMBC was in for a special year the way
they started – nearly knocking off Georgetown, and then healthy
wins over GW and Delaware. And they very well could be still,
but Vermont seems to have woken from its stupor (a weekend
against Maine will do that) so we'll see how it unfolds. We can
put ourselves in that conversation with an impressive couple
results here ... although I have my doubts.

will have to keep an eye on whether Owens plays – he missed the
finale against Hartford. Not sure if there's anything there.
Rogers/JRod might be a fun one.
       >
       > UMBC can be tough to figure out sometimes though. A home loss
to Bingo? (I know, we've done that too). And then shot it really
poorly in salvaging a split with Hartford this past weekend?
They've been really bad from deep of late, shooting 17 for 83
(.205) over the last two weekends, including a 2 for 21 night in
a win over Hartford. Either they stink ... or they're due. I
suspect it's the latter, and if UNH cashed in on the numerous
open looks they got, look out.
       >
       > I really don't know which way is up with the schedule. Our
website still shows we have NJIT this weekend. But whatever it
looks like, I think we're all in agreement that we can win or
lose any of them. And for me, if we split the rest of the series
this season and finish 10-8, that's not all bad for this group.
Not so great expectations, I know. But there are spells when we
look really good, and others where we seem lost. Who can we
count on in crunch time to make big shots, to make free throws,
to lead us to victory? We still need to find that all out – too
many comings and goings, stops and starts. Hopefully the
experience back on the floor, a good week of practice, and a
full healthy roster (see Sayles and Habwe) will get us at least
       one W this weekend.

Executive, King Cuomo gave permission to start high contact
sports Yesterday afternoon, (aka), Football. But left it up to
the County health officials to make that call for each county.
Votes are more important than this Virus, so, my guess is sports
will be resuming in March for all High school kids. As they
       should be..

I started reading this thread thinking it was brand new, and I
was wondering why we’re playing njit again.....lol. Forgot that
this thread was put on the shelf. A split this weekend and
we’re in good shape. I think we’re a better team on the floor
with LES vs Policelli....although not a shooter, LES is very
active, a hustler, and a much better defender/rebounder, imo. If
we restrict our shooting to inside 15’, we’ll be ok.
