The days of Lowell being the doormat of the league are
officially over. It still feels like it's Vermont or UMBC in the
end, but Lowell's a teams that could be right there too.
Nobody's had a better first month than Lowell, with wins over a
good San Francisco team as well as Monday's impressive win over
Vermont, their first in five years. UML also led Ohio State
going into the home stretch but couldn't hold on. There are
moral victories awarded on the road in Columbus.
We obviously have to start with Noel, who's been a fine fine
player for them for a long time. He'll be up over 1,600 points
for them before it's over. He's a just a tough competitor, going
to the basket with confidence and oftentimes finding himself at
the free throw line. I don't know if it's a concerted effort,
but he's taking more threes this year, which we've seen some
guys do seemingly as a way to make them more attractive players
for the next level. But really, he can get into the lane any
time he wants, and he's physical enough where he can bounce off
contact and score inside. I'd say he was more of a second fiddle
to Christian Lutete (now in Romania) the last two years, but
it's very much his team right now.
That said ... I really like their complementary pieces, and I
think they're even more responsible for their success than Noel.
Ron Mitchell dropped six threes in the win over UVM. Blunt was a
pretty good get for them and I thought he was a bust, but he's
responded to added minutes with some really good production.
Wagner transfer Darion Jordan-Thomas is a problem inside, and we
may see the continued emergence of Greg Hammond, a three-star
transfer from URI, who played 13 good minutes in the second UVM
game. Lastly, Bryce Daley's a guy we'd love here – a good-sized
playmaker who make some nifty passes and has some ability
offensively too.
Despite Lowell's early-season success, I'm still surprised that
KenPom doesn't have us as the favorite. Even though I feel like
they're the better team, I wasn't ready to make them road
favorites here.
Lowell's a little bigger inside than they've been, but I still
think we can play a little bully ball here. Sayles is a load
that you just don't see in the AE very often, and he's got good
feel around the basket. We have four guys who average at least
five boards, and Habwe, who I feel like I see in the mix on
every play, isn't one of them. And it's great to see some of
these very same guys find their stroke offensively – granted,
we'll face teams with more defensive chops than Binghamton. One
of those teams isn't Lowell though. They've gone up and down in
years past, giving up 78 points per game in conference last
year.
I'm coming around on our guys. We might be all right.It would
really show me something if we took at least one of these games
this weekend, showing that we weren't just beating up on a bad
team last weekend. Our non-conference losses are looking a
little better now – Hofstra hung with St. Bonaventure and just
beat a very good Richmond team. Bryant won at UMass. You could
argue that Hofstra, Bryant and St. Peter's will all win their
conference. With the kind of wins they've posted already, a
sweep in UML's favor is definitely in play, but I think this
weekend is more likely a split.

Thanks Checkmate. I see us as pretty even, and think we'll
split. Would be nice for the sweep, will be devastating if we
get swept.
Pretty upset that this game was re-scheduled to 2 PM and
conflicts with Giants game on Sunday.

Wow! No comments? Watched this game in the background and they
played so well. Great passing, good shooting, and a very
cohesive team win. Policelli showing off the shooting prowess
that we’ve heard about. So impressed with Habwe’s complete game,
namely his passing. Sayles and JRod with solid games. Let’s get
greedy now and go for the sweep.

I’ll be honest, I was watching NFL instead with it being fantasy
football finals week and all.
Numbers at a quick glance look good. Is that seven assists for
JFR??? wow. Cant recall the last time we had a player with that
many dimes.

Agreed! They looked great. Nobody played outside their skill
set, and it worked. A win like this in the rematch might make me
feel like things are coming together.
The potential is there. They just got to get acclimated to each
other.

Nice W...caught up in football myself yesterday. Outside the
positives already mentioned and looking at the box score I don’t
like our 0-11 second half 3’s and Noel had over half their
points. 2 things we’ll work on in today’s game I’m sure.

I briefly watched snippets of the replay. Frankie was left wide
open numerous times and made those deep threes look so simple.
And that play on the inbound right before halftime was fantastic
- the camera angle was off but JFR took the corner three with 2
seconds left and got it.
It was a wide halftime lead and by all means we didn't blow it,
although the 0-for-11 shooting from three in the 2nd half is not
ideal.
I sure as hell didn't expect to beat Lowell - with the way they
shocked Vermont, San Fran, and put Ohio State on upset alert -
so handily. 3-0 in conference play is taken way less for granted
this season than years past.

Taking out Policelli and Sayles noticeably hurts the inside
game. Not a fan of some of the three shooting.
