Sandwiched between games that had and will have an absolutely
frenetic pace there's the old rivalry game, which we've come up
on the short end of every year since our nailbiting win at the
Fed in 2016. We're 5-23 in the series all time, and 4-12 since
we went D-I (2-6 at home, 2-6 in Hempstead).
With Hofstra, you have to start with the lead (lefty!) guards –
Coburn and Ray – who have stepped out of the shadows of guys
like Wright-Foreman, Pemberton and Buie to take the reins of
this team, which was projected to finish first in the CAA. Ray's
strong with the ball, can shoot the three, and isn't afraid to
go inside. And what I like most is the pace with which he plays
– always under control. You can see that in the stats, with just
three turnovers in three games (34+ mpg too). And then there's
Coburn, a springier guard who can score inside or out, as well
as in the mid-range. He's got a really pretty jumper – elevates
and releases at the top. Picture perfect. And hey, let's also
salute him for his academics – CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year
and aspires to be a PA. Just awesome.
I like their other guards too – don't need to score, just take
care of the ball, find open guys, and seize the opportunity when
you have it.
Coburn did a lot of his damage at the line in Hofstra's loss to
Iona, going 13 for 17. Free throws have always been in Hofstra's
favor since this coaching staff showed up seven years ago.
Consider last year they shot 245 more free throws than their
opponents, and 235 more in the year before that. But they both
pale in comparison to the 304 more free throws they attempted
back in 2015-16 when Juan'Ya Green led the charge. This year,
they're on pace to beat their opponents in that column by at
least 100 already.
Coburn and Kante are perfect examples of what we should strive
to get – NY kids who start out at high major schools (Coburn –
St. Bonaventure; Kante – Georgia) who don't get much burn as
freshmen and come home to play major minutes. Kante has been
quite a get. He's kind of built like Warney but has a little bit
more ability to put it on the floor. He was a CAA third teamer
last year and was picked to be on the first team in the
preseason this year. Brawny kid – not a high flyer. I'm looking
forward to the matchup between him and Sayles.
And then there's this kid Cramer. My goodness. He's a good sized
kid, he's physical and is some kind of athlete. He was offered
by Rutgers and Seton Hall, among others, before coming to
Hofstra. How'd he get there? Read up:
HTML https://www.cityofbasketballlove.com/news_article/show/1135625.<br
/>In short, he missed his final two years of high school
basketball and flew under the radar. The kid looks every bit
like a Power 5 player. And hey, if you click into that story, a
fun fact about his high school coach: it was a she! Never see
that. More awesome.
We're still learning a lot about our guys here, so I'd love to
see Gueye build on Sunday's game, and for Policelli to find the
touch from deep. We're really going to need shooters out there,
and besides Policelli and JFR, only Greene has shown any kind of
willingness to shoot them with regularity.
Sneak peek of Saturday's game – bet the over. Bryant's pace is
unlike any team in recent memory for me. It's like the NBA
All-Star Game. They're about to put up 100+ at St. Francis
(Brooklyn). St. John's on steroids.

Randomly decided to drive with a friend last year to Hofstra for
the game, about an hour before tip. Totally worth it, as the
game was close until the final few minutes if I remember
correctly. Hoping tonight's game is just as good.

Thanks Checkmate. FYI, for those watching on FloSports (aka
FloRipoff), sign up thru the TV icon on the SBU schedule line
item for the Hofstra game. Costs $12.50 for 1 month (minimum)
that way. If u try to sign up/access by directly going to
FloSports site, I believe it’s more (like $30). Also,
Checkmate’s link above is the same as the SBU website link, and
gives you this lower price.

kante is already a problem. we might need a double. he's also
exactly what we need on our squad.
we look a little panicky on offense.
this is the hof i expected- fast and athletic. what i didnt
expect is how they are out-physicaling us. badly.
i recall when "the mack" was built. not a great design. also
terrible uniforms.

Every shot from the outside and we don’t have anyone who can hit
them, aside from Policelli’s early 2-2 from 3. No penetration,
no offensive flow.

This isn't just a blowout but it's a blowout being brought to me
by Hofstra student radio.
I know this is supposed to be a pretty good Hofstra team, but
it's so deflating not being able to score/shoot with any
consistency. Gonna be a long year.

impatient offense. this looks like the 2019 team. just zone
them and they'll spot you 20 possessions free.
we should be down 40 by now. it's only 25

I’m not ponying up for Flo. Hofstra radio it is.
Seems to be an absolute inability to get the ball inside. After
the St. John’s game, I’m stunned at this ineptness.

Men vs Boys. Hofstra so much quicker and their guards can shoot.
So unimpressed with Diallo. Mo heaving from the outside, My
FloSports feed constNtly disconnecting.
