No matter what we feel about the quality of play in Friday
night's game, it feels good to have gotten on the board.
And that quality of play was not terrific. I think last year's
team beats this group by double digits. But the guys on the
roster battled, and I commend them for that. I feel like I could
see them coming together, playing together, in the last five
minutes and overtime, on the defensive end in particular and
playing through JFR on the offensive end.
Unfortunately, if Friday was any indication, we could be in for
a long day Sunday. I really don't know where we have an edge on
the floor. Certainly man for man we do not. St. John's was
picked to finish 10th in the Big East this year. They're 3-1 but
still feeling their way around with incoming freshmen and junior
college transfers. St. Peter's had them beat. And St. John's
watched a 20-point second-half lead dwindle to one before
holding off BC. The vibe from the St. John's crowd is they're
talented but also a little disjointed, a little erratic and
lacking on defense.
The matchup we'll all want to keep an eye on is JFR against Posh
Alexander, a New York kid who we offered but never really
contended for. He and Williams Jr. are key to the team's
philosophy of turning up the pressure on the opposition – note
the 81 turnovers forced in four games. And ball control hasn't
exactly been a strength of ours in the early going. Can JFR
withstand the pressure? I think it's a huge, huge spot for him
to really shine against bigger and faster competition. And then,
if we have to get into the 70s and 80s to win, do we have the
horses to do it?
St. John's played the first two games without Champagnie, who's
a pretty physical and versatile asset for them. He'll step out
and make three, loves the midrange jumper and is also somebody
that can run the break or dive to the hoop for a dish from their
distributors (see Posh). You see 27 a night and might think NBA,
but he's not a Shamarie Ponds type that you feed. Cole has some
of that alpha mentality. He went for 21 a night last year in
junior college and was the only player in NJCAA Division I who
was part of the 50-40-90 club. Big picture,
From a recruiting standpoint, it looks like they have a solid
class coming in, including two three-star players from LuHi.
They're also on the short list for a top 100 recruit from
Jersey, one of the rare elite FAs still out there. If you're
wondering why we don't get three-star guys from the metropolitan
area, it's because there are a lot of mouths to feed, and we're
pretty far back in the line.
Side note: I'm fired up about hitting the line more or less – I
do my prediction before it actually comes out and before looking
at KenPom. Another side note: John Minko and Brandon Tierney on
the call if you care to listen to the radio broadcast. I didn't
know Tierney did games.
I think it's a great effort from us if we keep it in single
digits. I think it'll be closer to 20 unfortunately. This team
has to show us something before they can get a big-time scalp
like this would be.

Stony Brook was actually the first reported offer for Posh
Alexander, a little over four years ago. Way back when big man
Jeff Boals ran the show... Love the game by game breakdowns.

This is definitely a game I would have been more excited to
watch had all of the defectors stayed. If they could have led a
Seton Hall team that was top-15 ranked in the second half, they
definitely could have put St. John's on upset watch.
JFR has been the best shooter on the team so far, which I would
not have predicted. In fact, he's really been the only one,
seeing as Policelli didn't contribute much yesterday. He's got
to do a better job of gaining separation from defenders.

I see the Johnnies winning this one by 30, even though they are
clearly a notch below where they were at as a team a year ago.
Ponds is a special freshman and is head and shoulders above
JRod, IMO, in terms of athleticism and ability (and I mean no
disrespect to JRod here). Champagnie is an awesome player who
can shoot, and will be so tough for any of our guys to defend.
St. Johns as a team will run and gun, and press on D, and I just
can't see us competing at all. I will be rooting for SBU, but
my wife is a St. John's grad, so I root for them during the year
too. I think we'll need to inject TSM and TPP into the mix, to
add a semblance of athletic competitiveness.

If Sbu can just control the turnovers and hit more than half of
their free throws maybe just maybe they can be competitive late.
I really think the tools are there for this team to be somewhat
decent on offense the defense though is a major concern from an
athletic perspective.

I love St. John’s to cover in this one. In terms of legit
offensive weapons, there just isn’t nearly enough outside of
JFR. And no practice against what we’re about to walk into? SMH.
Last year’s team would have been right in this one.
We may very well bring up Policelli’s three-star status for the
next three years, but he’s gotta show us something here. And
Ford said that he isn’t concerned about Gueye. Let the record
state that I am concerned about Gueye.
The notes that Rubin put together are better than what you’d see
in Newsday. There’s some actual inside info there. Bravo to him.
I hope we see more of it.

agreed on gueye- EXCEPT the last few min of the FU game and OT.
he was great in those moments.
i went to Carnesecca in 2009 for that last game- the U put out a
spread at a local bar, really nicely done. we played solid that
night. you could feel SB was on the verge of becoming
recognized. if i recall we were in it until maybe 5min left.
rubin is a star. his podcast is great too; ive never listened
to podcasts before.

I don’t mean defensively. No worries about that as long as he’s
on the floor – gets on the boards, changes and blocks shots,
fantastic. But he has not delivered on the offensive end at all.
Podcasts are tremendous. Caliphate, Revisionist History, In the
Dark (season 2), Book of Basketball, so many good ones.

I wonder if TSM just thought he was guaranteed a starting spot
and was phoning it in a bit during practices. I thought he had a
starting spot locked up just based on how much Geno trusted in
him at the end of last year, benching Latimer to start him
instead. Definitely wouldn't have expected to him to be that low
on the pecking order so far, but goes to show how little we know
about what's really going on inside.
