Stony Brook overcomes slow start to beat Bryant
HTML https://www.newsday.com/sports/college/stony-brook/stony-brook-mens-lacrosse-bryant-1.50160005
Bryant was hanging with – even besting – the Stony Brook
men’s lacrosse team early in Saturday afternoon’s non-conference
game. But once it got to the later stages, goalie Anthony Palma
and the rest of the Stony Brook defense put a stop to that.
Palma made 16 saves and allowed only one goal in the second half
as No. 20 Stony Brook defeated visiting Bryant, 14-8, at LaValle
Stadium. Cory Vanginhoven and Mike McCannell both scored three
goals for Stony Brook, which outscored Bryant 7-1 in the second
half and erased a 4-0 first-quarter deficit.
"We knew it was going to be a prize fight," Stony Brook coach
Anthony Gilardi said. "They’re going to hit some punches, we’re
going to hit some punches, and it came down to who was going to
keep swinging.
"At the very least, Palma kept saving. He made nine of his 16
saves in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter.
"I think he was just locked in," Gilardi said. "We’ve seen that
from Anthony for the year and a half I’ve been at Stony Brook.
He has that in him, to get hot. He’s been really consistent this
entire year. We knew he would settle in."
Bryant (1-1) scored four goals in the first five minutes of the
game. Stony Brook (2-0), which rolled against Sacred Heart last
week, answered with four straight of their own, capped by a Matt
Anderson equalizer with 1:08 left in the first quarter.
"Our defense knows that we know how to play the game," said
Palma, a junior from East Islip. "…We just came out a little
flat but we never lost composure. We took a time out, we knew
what we were doing. We knew we were the better team"
Palma continued: "The first four (minutes), they got a couple
shots in. The big thing there is not to freak out….It’s all
about the next save.
"The second quarter saw much of the same. Bryant opened up with
two consecutive goals and Stony Brook’s offense powered up late
to tie it. Matt DeMeo’s man-up goal with 48 seconds left in the
second quarter tied the score at 7, where it stood until Wayne
White’s goal with 6:33 left in the third gave Stony Brook an 8-7
lead.
After Bryant cut the Stony Brook lead to 9-8 late in the third
quarter, the Seawolves scored the final five goals of the game.
Bryant won the faceoff battle decisively, with Nathan Laliberte
controlling 18-of-26 draws. Miller Place’s Jake Buonaiuto had an
assist and four shots on goal for Bryant.
Men's DI Roundup: Navy's Rees Solid in First Start; Stony Brook
Shares the Wealth in Win
No. 20 Stony Brook 14, Bryant 8
The Seawolves are 2-0 for the first time since 2017, clamping
down on Bryant after a slow start. Goalie Anthony Palma made 16
saves and held the Bulldogs to one goal in the second half.
Bryant started 4-0 in the first five minutes, but Stony Brook
answered with four straight. After being held scoreless for more
than 14 minutes, Bryant’s last goal came at 4:11 left in the
third quarter. A Dylan Pallonetti goal kicked off a run of six
straight to end the game for the Seawolves, who got
contributions from Cory Vanginhoven (3G, 1A), Mike McCannell
(3G), Matt DeMeo (2G) and Matt Anderson (2G, 1A).

Strong Second Half Effort Pushes Stony Brook Past Bryant
After an offensive filed first half that saw the two squads tied
7-7 heading into the locker room, the Stony Brook Seawolves
exploded in the second half. The Seawolves’ defense held Bryant
to just one goal in the final two quarters of play and put on an
offensive clinic of their own.
Wayne White opened the scoring for Stony Brook to put them up
8-7 with 6:33 in the third and they never looked back. Mike
McCannell followed up White’s goal with one of his own to make
it 9-7 and after a Ryan Dobrzynski goal for Bryant, Dylan
Pallonetti got his first goal of the game for Stony Brook to end
the third with the Seawolves holding a 10-8 lead.
The Seawolves outscored the Bulldogs 7-1 in the second half and
ended the game on a five-goal run that started with Pallonetti’s
first and only goal of the game.
Cory Vanginhoven led Stony Brook with four points (3G/1A) while
Mike McCannell had a hat trick. Wayne White (1G/2A) and Matt
Anderson (2G/1A) each had three points, as well. Anthony Pamala
made 16 saves in cage.
Nathan Laliberte went 18-for-26 (69%) at the faceoff dot. Logan
McGovern and Bennett Abladian each had two goals to lead the
Bulldogs’ offense.

15. Stony Brook The Seawolves got the best of Bryant on
Saturday to solidify their Top 20 status. They used a 7-1 run in
the second half to secure a 14-8 victory. Goalie Anthony Palma
made 16 saves, including six in the fourth quarter. This may be
a strong win for the America East over an NEC contender. With
the Ivy League out of the NCAA Tournament equation, the door
could be open for more at-large teams. Similar to college
football with the rise of Cincinnati, Louisiana-Lafayette and
Coastal Carolina, the mid-majors will attract more love in

For Stony Brook Lacrosse, The Best Is Yet to Come: On The Rise
HTML https://lilaxjournal.com/2020/11/19/for-stony-brook-lacrosse-the-best-is-yet-to-come-on-the-rise/
Over the last decade, Stony Brook University has
continuously aimed to secure its place as a Division One
powerhouse. The college has produced some of the game’s biggest
names and only looks to evolve in the coming years. Last season
was no exception; the program made a fundamental change by
introducing a new coaching staff. And for what it’s worth, 2020
was the sign of better things to come. In the seven games that
they played, the team went 5-2 and showcased impressive play
from their key contributors. Head Coach Anthony Gilardi is
excited and confident that this year’s squad can accomplish that
and more in 2021.
The play of the team’s seniors was excellent– if last year
proved anything, it showed the depth in the team’s roster. A
midfield squad including names like Chris Pickel Jr. and Mike
McCannell was dominant. Pickel Jr. provided an impressive stat
line and showed his grit on both sides of the field.
Ontario-native McCannell did more of the same, demonstrating his
agility and distinct lacrosse IQ. Devin O’ Leary and Connor
Gripe are just two of the other senior midfielders that showed
off their talent, too. Their ability to space the field was
crucial last season and should provide the team with a sturdy
backbone. I’d expect their play only to improve in 2021.
With that said, the team’s defense, which included names like
Danny Cassidy and Devin O’Leary, was also fantastic. Both play
with a hard-nosed mentality that is hard to beat in any
capacity. The two, accompanied by a sea of young defenders will
be lethal this season.
Tom Haun and Corey VanGinhoven are both senior attackmen that
will shine in 2021. Haun was a killer on both sides of the
field; in the seven games played, the Ronkonkoma native put up
15 goals and picked up 21 ground balls. The latter put up
numbers, too, controlling the pace of the game and earning 15
goals of his own. They both will play a needed role in the
team’s offensive dynamic.
As for Stony Brook’s younger talent, I’d say that the sky is the
limit. Take Renz Conlon for example, the Rocky Point FOGO who
won 41 faceoffs last year. Austin Deskewicz was impressive as
well, making his mark all over the field. Expect Wayne White to
have his best season yet– the junior is expected to be a key
contributor in this year’s offense. Other names to watch include
David Mielle-Estrella, Patrick Kaschalk, Christian Lowd, and
Harrison Matsuka– you can expect their performances to shine
throughout the season. I personally believe Mielle-Estrella is
set to have for a breakout year. He had some impressive
performances in 2020, picking up four ground balls in each of
the last four games of the season.
Coach Gilardi shared his thoughts on the upcoming season. “We
are really excited [about] the chance to build on the foundation
we laid as a new coaching staff last year,” he explained. “We
are very fortunate are to have a lot of 5th Year Seniors back to
anchor our team from an experience and leadership standpoint.”
Gilardi also praised the composure and determination of his
team: “Our team did a great job this fall managing the
uncertainty and focusing on controlling what we can control,
which is attacking each rep and opportunity with championship
effort, toughness and doing it together as a family.” It’s this
mentality that they will use heading into 2021; we’ll see if
they can make it happen.
Men's Lax Goalie Anthony Palma Named to USILA Team of Week
HTML https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2021/2/23/mens-lacrosse-mens-lax-goalie-anthony-palma-named-to-usila-team-of-week.aspx
STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Anthony Palma continues to dazzle in
his first season as the starting goalie for the Stony Brook
men's lacrosse team. And Palma was recognized for his
performance with a selection to the USILA Team of the Week on
Tuesday.
In a 14-8 win against Bryant on Saturday, Palma recorded a
career-high 16 saves. He allowed only one goal after
intermission and held the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 19
minutes, 11 seconds.
Palma, a 6-foot, 175-pound junior from East Islip, is 2-0 with
an 7.82 goals against average and 6.34 save percentage through
two collegiate starts.
He had been named the America East Defensive Player of the Week
on Monday.
"Anthony was fantastic in the goal, bailing us out any time they
had any good looks," coach Anthony Gilardi said. "… He's just
locked in. We've seen that from Anthony for the year and a half
I've been at Stony Brook. He has that in him to get hot. He's
been really consistent this year specifically."

Takeaways: Good News, Bad News
HTML https://www.insidelacrosse.com/slideshow/takeaways-good-news-bad-news/135?slide=2
Stony Brook Transition is Dangerous
Look out for Stony Brook in transition. Despite getting worked
at the face-off X, the Seawolves managed to conjure goals out of
turnovers with a spooky mix of hard-nosed interior defense and a
cohesive defensive sliding package that stifled Bryant’s
offense. The offense has also looked great in settled sets as
well with Corey Vanginhoven (6G, 5A) leading the charge, making
unselfish plays and shooting at a 50% clip. Redshirt freshman
Dylan Pallonetti (7, 2) has a green light to let fly and has an
absolute blunderbuss of a shot. Every time he winds up the ball
is guaranteed to have next-level velocity. Junior goalkeeper
Anthony Palma is also having a solid start, with 26 saves in his
first two games and a 63.4% stop rate.

Last Week: Unranked

Results: Defeated Bryant, 14-8
While Stony Brook’s opening win against Sacred Heart was good,
this win over Bryant was excellent. The reason why is how spread
out its scoring was and how it scored in bunches. Bryant came
out and scored four quick goals in the first five minutes of the
contest. But Stony Brook closed out the first with four of its
own. The second half was all Seawolves: seven of the eight goals
in the second half, all scored by six different shooters, with
three different feeders.
