thanks- so here's more ink for SB Lacrosse, because hey we are
all cooped up at home these days...
QSB put up a photo of Pallonetti:
HTML https://twitter.com/quickstickblog/status/1362157537114619911
and Lacrosse Reference put Pallonetti as one of the most
efficient players last weekend:
Pallonetti had a pretty well rounded game in his first
start with the Seawolves after transferring from Maryland. He
shot 50% (6 goals on 12 shots), which was a big part of Stony
Brook logging a 36.4% shooting percentage in this one.
Early QB Injury Helped Launch Austin Deskewicz's Lax Faceoff
Career
STONY BROOK, N.Y. — During a six-month-plus recovery from
a broken collarbone suffered on an ill-fated handoff while
quarterbacking his JV football team as a ninth-grader, Austin
Deskewicz spent the considerable idle time watching YouTube
videos of lacrosse faceoff technique.
Deskewicz, a 6-foot, 185-pound junior, won 12 of 13 faceoffs
during a 20-8 season-opening win last Saturday against Sacred
Heart. The .923 win percentage has him currently ranked first
overall in the NCAA, albeit after one week of play.
"It was definitely exciting having a lot of success in the
faceoff X, but it wasn't just me out there. Our wings do a
phenomenal job communicating with me on the field and off the
field," said Deskewicz, a business management major from upstate
Ballston Spa. "We were just clicking. As a faceoff unit in
general, we were able to get into a rhythm. Renz and I were
going back and forth every three or four faceoffs. We were
clicking throughout the whole game."
STONY BROOK TAKING STEPS FORWARD IN SECOND YEAR UNDER ANTHONY
GILARDI
The Seawolves, who opened with a 20-8 victory over Sacred Heart
on Saturday, have seven fifth-year seniors scattered across the
field. Four started against the Pioneers (attackmen Tom Haun and
Cory VanGinhoven, midfielder Chris Pickel Jr. and defenseman CJ
Trenkle), while midfielder Wayne White had two assists off the
bench and Tom Dugan played a significant role as a defensive
midfielder.
Dylan Pallonetti played at nearby Ward Melville High School and
originally committed to UMass before spending last season at
Maryland. In his debut with the Seawolves, he had six goals and
an assist.
“Every time I watched him play, I thought, ‘Geez, we’re going to
struggle guarding him,’” Gilardi said of monitoring Pallonetti
during his time as an assistant at Towson. “When he came in the
portal, we said, ‘We have to find a way to make this happen,’
and we used every resource. We really dialed into his high
school coach a ton. It was the right fit. We thought he clicked
right away.”
Midfielder Matt DeMeo’s ties to the Seawolves go back to before
he was born. His father Jerry was the defensive coordinator on
John Espey’s staff in the 1990s. DeMeo played the last three
seasons at Maritime College, setting the Division III school’s
for goals (142) and points (186). Included was a 79-goal
outburst in 2019.
Re: SB Lacrosse 2021 Season
By: Chairman of the Board Date: February 20, 2021, 1:44 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
the first 4 minutes of this game was disastrous; bryant came out
with intensity, pressing gloves, winning draws, dominating ToP,
scoring goals, etc. then SB settled in and went on a 14-4 run,
only surrendering one 2nd half goal (that was arguably a fluke).
bryant's strategy was clear: missing their best player and also
a captain, win faceoffs and sit on the ball. they press the
gloves hard, coming all the way out of the box every possession.
they locked mccannell deep out into the neutral zone. they
even pressed on EMD.
GOAL: palma needed a few minutes to settled in and then just
crushed it. there are good players who become coaches, and
there are good players who become coaches who live and breathe
the game. so when you hire a JP Brazel, this is the kind of
defense you get.
DEFENSE: two games now we've gone on long shutdown stretches.
late, we went into a diamond invert zone that looked midseason
form. other than first 4min poles played great (EMD, clears,
knocking down passes, rotations). stickwork looks midseason
form too; 22/24 clears. EMD was 5/6. lowd got 6 grounders.
FO: good coaching; we adjusted to the faceoff woes and turned
the tide. it's hard this year with the new rules and uneven
enforcement.
MID: tremendous games from dugan and miele. late in the game
bryant used a zone ride and then a 10man. miele fired an
absolute rocket on the run from 16 yards, we should uncork that
more.
HTML https://twitter.com/StonyBrookMLAX/status/1363197370280910851
OFFENSE: we forced the ball at times, took some low angle shots,
and pallonetti missed the cage a whole bunch (they were on his
gloves). mccannell was good before; he's a new level now. i
still think anderson is the most dynamic threat, which we saw
last year. demeo continues to impress.
otherwise, credit to the team not panicking after the early 4-0
deficit. we won GBs despite losing FO 18-8. coach is 7-2 so
far.
the bad: too many flags (though some were the draw violations),
and again impatient with the ball, forcing some bad shots and
low angles. we lost 4 possessions by not backing up
(unacceptable).
DOMINANT SECOND HALF PROPELS STONY BROOK
Few games better epitomize the notion that lacrosse is a game of
runs than Stony Brook’s 14-8 win over Bryant this afternoon at
LaValle Stadium. After Bryant started the game with four
unanswered scores, the Seawolves answered with one of their own.
Then they used another four-goal run to take their first lead of
the game in the third quarter and a six-goal run to put the game
away.
Stony Brook’s offensive output featured eight different scorers.
Seven different players had multi-point outings. Graduate
student attackman Cory VanGinhoven led the way with three goals
and one assist.
Despite winning only 8 of 26 faceoffs, Stony Brook survived.
Anthony Palma’s career-high 16 saves helped preserve the scoring
runs. He made nine saves in the second half when Stony Brook’s
defense held Bryant to a single goal.
The win, a week after the Seawolves topped Sacred Heart 20-8,
marks the first time Stony Brook has opened their season with
consecutive wins since 2017.
