Dylan Pallonetti Returns Home, Primed to Help Lead Men's Lax
Attack
HTML https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2021/2/1/mens-lacrosse-dylan-pallonetti-returns-home-primed-to-help-lead-mens-lax-attack.aspx
STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Connor Grippe and Dylan Pallonetti
overlapped one season on the Ward Melville High School lacrosse
team, when Grippe was a senior captain and Pallonetti was only a
ninth-grader.
"Even as a freshman in high school, he had a knack for getting
to the goal and finishing the ball," said Grippe, now a
fifth-year senior and a captain with Stony Brook men's lacrosse.
"He elevates the game of everyone around him when he's on the
field."
Said Pallonetti: "I just remember him always looking out for the
younger guys and being a good role model."
Now, the duo has reunited.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Pallonetti, who spent last season
redshirting at the University of Maryland, is with the Seawolves
and expected to be a major contributor at attack.
"Obviously it's pretty cool to play lacrosse right in my back
yard," Pallonetti said about transferring to Stony Brook. "I
think the biggest part was the culture. What the coaching staff
laid out to me, they were right on point. It's exactly what they
told me, which is great. The coaching staff really stood out to
me. They offered something different. I just felt it and went
with it, and I'm happy to be here now."
Said Stony Brook coach Anthony Gilardi: "Dylan is an extremely
talented playmaker who has really bought into our system of team
offense. He works with Tom Haun, Cory VanGinhoven and Patrick
Kaschalk at attack. His versatility also gives us the ability to
play him above the cage."
Said Grippe: "It's awesome to see how much he's grown as a
player over these last five years. He had a great career at Ward
Melville. And I'm sure he will leave a lasting impression here
at Stony Brook."
NJIT and UMBC are on there twice; looks intentional.

2021 Schedule Preview: Stony Brook Seawolves
Games to Circle
2/27 @ Hofstra: The Long Island Rivalry has gone to Stony Brook
two years in a row with the Seawolves winning 11-10 in 2019 and
14-11 last season. Hofstra leads the series 6-5 all-time and
last won in 2018.
4/3 @ Hartford: During the last full season (2019), Hartford
upset Stony Brook 12-11 to break a seven-game winning streak in
the series for the Seawolves. Stony Brook also only won the 2018
matchup by two goals, 10-8. While not the most appetizing
matchup to most fans at first glance, it could be a tight one
again.

MARCH 12: VS. STONY BROOK
Here is another first-time opponent for Syracuse to host in the
Carrier Dome. Oddly enough, these two New York-based programs
have never faced off. Another America East squad, the Seawolves
got off to a fantastic start last season before the pause, going
5-2 with close victories against St. John’s, Brown and at
Rutgers.
Tom Haun is the centerpiece for Stony Brook. The senior attack
posted 34 goals in 2019 to lead the Seawolves while adding 12
assists. He has 94 career goals and looks to climb further up
the Seawolves’ record book this season. Stony Brook is coached
by Anthony Gilardi, who came over before the 2020 season after
eight years at the helm of Towson.

of those victories coming by a goal. Tom Haun, Cory Vanginhoven
and Caleb Pearson spearhead coach Anthony Girardi’s offense. I
liked the work Girardi did at Towson as OC before taking over
Stony Brook. This program has upward trajectory in the America
East, and I’m seeing non-conference games with Syracuse, Hofstra
and Bryant. They open with Sacred Heart on Saturday.
Great Expectations: Men's Lax Picked First in AE Preseason Poll
HTML https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2021/2/9/mens-lacrosse-picked-first-in-america-east-preseason-poll.aspx
The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team has been picked as
the league favorite by America East coaches in the preseason
poll released Tuesday.
The Seawolves, who open their season on Saturday at noon against
Sacred Heart at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, received four
first-place votes.
They went 5-2 in Anthony Gilardi's abbreviated first season as
head coach last spring.
Here is the predicted order of finish in America East, with
first-place votes in parentheses:
1. Stony Brook (4), 44 points
2. UAlbany (2), 43
3. UMBC, 38 (2)
4. Vermont, 35
5. UMass Lowell, 23
6. Hartford, 20
7. Binghamton, 14
8. NJIT, 7

Men's Lacrosse Goaltending Remains in Good Hands
HTML https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2021/2/11/mens-lacrosse-goaltending-remains-in-good-hands.aspx
Anthony Palma, Kyle Hebert and Liam Daly all are capable
goaltenders on the roster as Saturday's noon season opener
against Sacred Heart at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium approaches.
As for the lack of career minutes in official games, Brazel
added: "I was having this conversation with a friend recently —
a former goaltender of mine. I think we're lucky that Anthony
Palma played a ton of minutes last fall (in 2019), when we
scrimmaged Yale and Providence. We didn't clear the ball very
well in those, and we weren't ourselves quite yet. We played a
lot of defense. So, luckily, Anthony can say he's seen Division
I rubber from two quality teams like that in the past and played
well.
"Obviously now, going into the season as a goaltender coach, you
really hope that he gets out there against somebody else besides
a Stony Brook jersey and makes that first save and gets his
rhythm and gets his confidence, because that position is so much
about rhythm and confidence."

Re: SB Lacrosse 2021 Season/ Pre-Week 1 Thoughts and Insight
By: KFERMINSBU Date: February 12, 2021, 2:50 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi all, Ken Fermin here. You may know me as one of the voices
for Stony Brook Athletics on America East TV and WUSB FM. With
less than 24 hours till the MLAX's season opener, I thought I
would share some insight heading into it. I also spoke with
Coach Gilardi earlier this week and included some of his
thoughts via quotes (don't worry, everything was on the record).
Staying Safe- The team was very strict on following safety
protocols on and off the field. Living on campus, players are
only around the general student body when they pick up food at
the take-out dining halls. Otherwise student-athletes are likely
isolated in their rooms or at the workout rooms/stadium.
Setting the bar- The seniors will set the bar. However, Gilardi
says everyone understands the system much better than last
season. Arguably, the team's biggest improvement this offseason
was a better understanding the defensive system.
Michael Bollinger- Was with the team over the fall, but
graduated/accepted a job over the winter. Kept coaches in the
loop throughout the entire process and the team is very proud of
their former goalie.
Goalkeeping- I would not be surprised if there is no true No.1
goalie until playoff time. Gilardi says all three have looked
impressive, with Liam being "the most improved player of the
program since last season." However, I would expect Herbert/
Palma to start every other game, similar to Saros/Rinne in the
NHL, this season.
Scheduling- This team went through a lot of schedules. Several
other opponents were penciled in for tomorrow's game before SHU.
Both LAX programs aren't shy about building "top-10" schedules
and the men are quite happy having No.3 Syracuse on it.
Unfortunately, the pandemic probably cost the team competing
against IVY/ Big-10 schools for the time being.
Being tabbed AE favorites- Gilardi thinks it was bold,
considering he hasn't faced an AE team yet as the SB head coach.
He is confident Stony Brook can be a top-10 program.
Sacred Heart- They have some "elite" offensive players and play
aggressive defensively the whole game. One key to winning will
be countering the '10-man zone ride' the Pioneers defense
excelled at vs SB last season
Starting lineup tomorrow- "That’s a great question. I have
no idea.”
My pre-game thoughts- Excitement and Hope: Tomorrow is the first
MLAX game in 11 months. As different as the circumstances are
surrounding the Bryant game and tomorrow's, there's no denying
the satisfaction of seeing them compete again. There is a lot of
hype surrounding this team, and for good reason. There are a lot
of seniors on this team playing with a huge chip on their
shoulder-- partly because they know how quickly the opportunity
can be taken away, partly because of the one-and-done vs UMBC in
the '19 Semis. But with five top-ranked teams in the conference,
it feels like the athletics program is on the horizon to finding
the same successes it had a decade ago (BASE CWS Finalists, LAX
Qtr Finalists, etc.)
Please join me and the rest of the WUSB crew tomorrow for MLAX's
opening day game, starting at 11:45 AM on WUSB 90.1 FM. We we
also be broadcasting the WBB weekend series vs MAINE, with game
one immediately following lacrosse.
