There are a lot of people out there who are more educated than I
about the potential comings and goings of the CAA, the economics
of it, the TV deals, etc. But I feel like the time is right. It
just feels like so many AE programs have been stagnant for a
quarter century (UNH, Maine, NJIT, Bingo, Hartford dropping
down) whereas we're trying to ramp things up. The AE is just a
tough sell to a serious basketball player when there are 2-4
teams in the bottom 50 nationwide, in places that might as well
be Guam for recruits from fertile areas further south.
It'd be cool to go there with another AE team, like UMBC, just
to keep something going.
I've had my heart set on the A-10, but perhaps that's too big of
a leap for us. Even the bottom-half teams in that conference at
least capture major cities. We can talk up what we're doing, but
we can't offer that really. It's undoubtedly a step up in
competition a basketball standpoint—six top 200 teams in the CAA
to just one for the AE. And they've got us handily year after
year. As far as the names on the jersey, am I going to get up
more for Drexel or Towson or Elon (or rumored programs like
Monmouth or Fairfield) than I am the current AE schools? Will
the students? Will the area? Almost certainly no.
But on the surface, I think it's too good of an opportunity to
pass up. I don't know if the CAA's it. But I do know that the AE

To think SB would ever have a shot at the A-10 really is
laughable. There are many reasons why SB shouldn't move into a
Basketball only conference, and we talked about those things
over the years on this forum.
If Vermont, who is arguably the darling of the AE for years.
constantly in the top 100 RPI, SOS cant get an invite in the
A-10, SBU has zero shot of even being considered.
Joing the CAA is something that was in the cards and should have
happened years ago from the former AD, Fiore, who we all miss.
Now is the time to seize that moment and get recognized by
better athletes in all sports. Regardless if the CAA is a one
bid league or not.

I don’t if that’s true. Sure Vermont has had our number for
years. But if we had the success Vermont had, I’m pretty sure we
would be much closer to A10 than Vermont ever would be. The
location of Vermont really hurts them. And for all their
winnings, they made to dance only 3 times last decade!

Thanks for sharing. I have been pretty vocal about against
joining CAA last few years..but now that it’s actually
happening, I think I’m on board now. I just want to get
out from frozen AE. Not blaming AE for our failure but a change
in scenery might be what we need.

I miss Fiore for his uncanniness ability to get things done.
Whatever it takes. If Fiore was still SB AD you can bet your
last Dollar the Baseball field would have been expanded by now,
with lights and bleachers. Something SH said he would
prioritize, but once again, Nothing. Fiore would have pressed
hard to move the Football program up to the FBS level, and quite
possibly, succeed.

"Pulling out all the stops to keep them."
That part got me laughing. It's like we're the Gonzaga of the
America East lmao. What could they realistically do? There's
nothing that they could do that would be worth us staying here.
The AE is a dead end conference. If we want the A10 or an FBS
league down the road we have to get out. I'm excited to make
this move.
I'll admit I would like it more if Vermont tagged along too
instead of Monmouth, Fairfield, or whoever the hell else they're
looking at adding, but I'm fine making the move alone.

Hey Newsday, how about a story?
So it looks like this is it for the America East. For some
reason, I envisioned it being a drawn-out process, but at this
time next year, a whole new group of teams will be coming in.

Stony Brook is a done deal to the CAA, source told @Stadium. CAA
also set to add Hampton and Monmouth, and could still target
anywhere from 2-4 more teams at some point. Final approval on
Stony Brook, Hampton and Monmouth expected early next week.

I find it to be so refreshing and a breath of fresh air that
this Univerity is so transparent to season ticket holders and
the community in regards to this move from the AE to the CAA.
What a total horshit that we have to get information from forums
and other universities about what is going on with this school.
I am getting a little pissed off and I am about to call it
quits.

Disagree. I think this is pretty much how every conference
change unfolds—news gets it before the school is ready to unveil
formally. It’s almost like a soft launch.
Unless it’s Newsday. They’ll cover it last.
