No doubt the landscape has changed, and big time. Covid has
turned the world upside down, and although there are multiple
factors involved, NYS is no longer in a bullish, spending mode.
There will be less $ to go around, and if SBU athletics retains
all of its current programs, it will certainly be a coup imo.
More likely to see cuts ongoing.
Another unknown factor is President McInnis' orientation towards
sports. Although she comes from a big-time sports school, she
has nothing on her resume that indicates that she's
pro-athletics. So this is another TBD wild card.
If you turn the clock back a year, I would have predicted that
SH was destined to pick up and leave for a bigger program. Wow,
have times changed. In this current environment, I'm betting
that SH is happy to have a job, and perhaps even worried about
retaining his job (I'm guessing his contract is up soon). All
speculation on my part.

or Priore are going anywhere. SBU is not in a financial
position to buy these guys out for a lot of coin, and cannot
afford to consider upgrading to a higher level of coaching

I cant disagree with you on that. The sad part is I like both of
them as a person. But, That doesn't translate to winning games.

Agree with the OP. No chance of happening anytime soon but A10
would be perfect. Would love to see us battle out against UMass,
Rhody, GMU, GW, VCU. But the momentum we had, is all gone since
Pikiell/Warney years. And A10 probably wants to shrink from 14
members by getting rid of some of the dead weight programs.

What conference would want SB and why? It would cost SB a lot of
money to make a move. They cant raise money. Name one person in
the athletics dept that makes you want to whip out your
checkbook. Two issues that you cant overcome at SB with SB and
RE. They have proven that for years.

Someone in the Football News thread said that There’s a strong
rumor that SBU is moving all sports to CAA. We’ll see if that’s
true or not. If that means FloSports, it may end my viewership.

There are a lot of people out there who are more educated than I
about the potential comings and goings of the CAA, the economics
of it, the TV deals, etc. But I feel like the time is right. It
just feels like so many AE programs have been stagnant for a
quarter century (UNH, Maine, NJIT, Bingo, Hartford dropping
down) whereas we're trying to ramp things up. The AE is just a
tough sell to a serious basketball player when there are 2-4
teams in the bottom 50 nationwide, in places that might as well
be Guam for recruits from fertile areas further south.
It'd be cool to go there with another AE team, like UMBC, just
to keep something going.
I've had my heart set on the A-10, but perhaps that's too big of
a leap for us. Even the bottom-half teams in that conference at
least capture major cities. We can talk up what we're doing, but
we can't offer that really. It's undoubtedly a step up in
competition a basketball standpoint—six top 200 teams in the CAA
to just one for the AE. And they've got us handily year after
year. As far as the names on the jersey, am I going to get up
more for Drexel or Towson or Elon (or rumored programs like
Monmouth or Fairfield) than I am the current AE schools? Will
the students? Will the area? Almost certainly no.
But on the surface, I think it's too good of an opportunity to
pass up. I don't know if the CAA's it. But I do know that the AE
ain't.

To think SB would ever have a shot at the A-10 really is
laughable. There are many reasons why SB shouldn't move into a
Basketball only conference, and we talked about those things
over the years on this forum.
If Vermont, who is arguably the darling of the AE for years.
constantly in the top 100 RPI, SOS cant get an invite in the
A-10, SBU has zero shot of even being considered.
Joing the CAA is something that was in the cards and should have
happened years ago from the former AD, Fiore, who we all miss.
Now is the time to seize that moment and get recognized by
better athletes in all sports. Regardless if the CAA is a one
bid league or not.

Positive/Negatives/Comments on moving to CAA from my vantage
point:
NEGATIVES: It will inevitably cost SBU a lot of money to leave
AE (buy out), and pay for things like re-branding. Is it worth
the $ to move to another one-bid conference, even if it is
stronger than the AE? If we're going to spend all this money to
move to a different conference, would it be more prudent to hold
out for the bigger prize of the A-10 (now has 21 men/women
sports)? Is moving to the A-10 even achievable in the next 5
years? Another negative is will this reinforce keeping the
current football coach, to keep "stability" in the transfer to a
new conference? Yet another negative is will SBU leaving be the
beginning of the end for the AE?
POSITIVES: CAA is a stronger conference than AE and that would
certainly be an uptick for SBU athletics. Moreover, if the new
SBU President is endorsing this, this is a major positive for
SBU and its future in sports, and may put to rest the rumors of
SBU going by the way of Hartford (DIII). Silent, but resonating
support for SBU Athletics, from the new chief.
COMMENTS: Assuming that this move to CAA is going to happen, one
cannot help venture to think that the tipping point may have
been the way the SBU baseball team was treated by the
then-acting AE Commissioner. Also, as others have pointed out,
we have perennial athletic cellar dwellars in the AE; time to
associate ourselves with a better brand of athletic competition.
