Stony Brook in the America East

I figured that dissatisfaction with the America East and
discussion around potential landing spots is a hot topic with
this lot. Our relocation comes up in game threads, recruiting
threads, etc., but here's a place for it to live permanently.
I'll start. I would like nothing more than to join the Atlantic
10 across the board, putting us in the same conference as
Fordham, Rhode Island, La Salle, St. Joe's, UMass and other
relatively nearby schools. Some schools are quite a distance
away for sure – Dayton, St. Louis, Richmond/VCU, et al – but
it's also 7 hours to Maine, 6 to Burlington, 5 to Durham, for
which we play in front of nobody for two of those games. We'd be
all over NBCSN, CBSSN, the actual ESPN, and more. I'm fine with
staying right where we are for football.
I don't know what the master plan is over at SBU, but I have to
think we're thinking bigger the way that campus is growing.

good thread- since it's likely to expand past bball, shall we
move it to the General Discussion thread?

looks like there are some threads even set up already.

The America East is just a very bad fit for us. We have by far
the largest enrollment numbers and the best academic reputation
out of any school in the conference. We’re playing in a
conference where nearly half the league has never made the NCAA
Tournament before. It just doesn’t suit us and it doesn’t do the
university justice.
I really wished the A-10 sponsored football.

Ah, my fault, I didn't even think to put it there. Your call.

I agree that we need to move, and the best move would actually
be an FBS conference, but the odds of that happening seem even
lower than they were 5-6 years ago when we had just joined the
CAA. Coach P hasn't advanced our program much since joining the
CAA.
The nicest thing about the A10 is that we could upgrade the rest
of our athletics while letting football grow at it's own pace.
The A10 would also be a better landing spot for Olympic sports
than most potential FBS landing spots. It's fairly regional and
is well regarded in basketball. I'd love an A10 invite. I'd be
at every GW and George Mason game, and most VCU games probably.

This conference doesn't do much to advance and promote the
actual game of basketball. There leadership is more or less
absent.

Not sure the CAA is an option - I think Hofstra would fight
tooth and nail against it - and as an existing member would get
their way.

Most likely, and Hofstra needs to put that $hit to the side and
let it go, but I still think the CAA is a much better conference
for BB, Baseball, Lax, etc. than the AE is. Why not keep all
sports in one conference? A good AD would want to improve the
school by trying their hardest to put them in the best, most
competitive conference out there.

i agree that we should be building natural and local rivalries-
and right now, i think our "rivals" in certain sports, meaning
who we are competitive with on the field, classroom, and
recruiting- are simply not impressive. i think of marist, SHU,
hof, bingo, SJ, wagner, albANy, QU, MC.
again, for most sports, not all. and just my opinion, which is
largely anecdotal.
i don't think we compete for recruits with nova, BU, UConn,
army. in fact, i don't think we compete with UMBC, UMass, or
ruTgers or cuse, though we should.
simply put, kids will leave LI to go to these places. they
largely won't go to LI though. further, i barely see upstaters
head to LI. so our pool is geographically small, but densely
populated. all adding to the insularity problem and weekend
problem that plagues the entire U.
