I’m getting fed up with most of the student body anyways. Too
many of them would rather play League of Legends or watch anime
instead of attending a collegiate sports event, it’s
infuriating.

Yup, that is correct. I'm sorry but I fault the State. We all
know why SBU has a very high percentage of Asians in this
school, MONEY... It all comes down to the Dollar. Asians could
care less about our American sports. They come here from Asia,
not to hang out and watch football, basketball, Lax. They come
here to learn our technology and take it back to their own
country and start a business.
I am on the verge of not caring about this University anymore. I
used to work for the Hospital, in the HSC building and I would
see the many Asians students going into the School of Medicine.
There are thousands. That doesnt include how many Asians are
enrolled in the Engineering depts. I know first hand how this
University caters to the Foreign students over our own students
here in NY. I cant support this school anymore and it's

It's a difficult move for the school to make. The dorms are
setup very differently than your run of the mill apartment
complex, thus making sure the students remain isolated much more
difficult. I can understand why they'd do this. There's no way
to effectively distance 6-7 students sharing a suite, or the
even greater number of students in a corridor style dorm with
the common bathrooms, shower, etc. To say they'd never donate to
the school again over this is ridiculous though.
agreed- and i will say i wasnt in love with the response the U
put out. then again, considering the context, and the # of
cooks in the kitchen, it's very hard to get this right- maybe
even impossible. GO SB

Lets not get all radicalized either.
Asian students like the rest of our student body work really
hard to enter our school and they study really hard while they
are here. At the end of the day the primary purpose of Stony
Brook University (or any Research University) is to provide an
education while also investing in research & development.
Sports and our student athletes are of great importance in the
American higher education model, but it is not the top priority
either and it shouldn't be the #1 priority.
A school should choose it's prospective students based on
academic merit (and in some cases other qualities to improve
social mobility in underrepresented groups) and it shouldn't
discriminate based on national-origin especially when the
reality is that everyday the state of New York provides less and
less direct funding to our "public" universities. For the most
part Stony Brook is a private school - the state contributes
less than 15% of the yearly budget to run the operations of the
school.
Without getting too political I have to say that your "come here
to learn our technology and take it back" sounds like a phrase
taken from a Trump speech. As a professional that works in the
technology sector I tell you that technology moves far too
quickly making it worthless to copy something and emulate
somewhere else. The key to technological success is innovation -
constantly creating new products and being the first mover.
Those that copy will always be a step behind and cannot conquer
the market. So have the peace of mind that no other country in
this world has an innovation ecosystem so extensive and powerful
as Silicon Valley.
If you want to keep the United States in the forefront of
technology then the key to success is increasing access to
higher education (reducing such costs by increasing the funding
of our schools using taxes) and maintaining our focus on
scientific research and development. These things need to get
funded using our public tax dollars. Lets make sure we ask of
our government that we spend more in science & technology, not
less. Next time you hear someone complaining about their high
federal taxes make sure you let them know how lowering them can
hurt the well-being of this wonderful country

Excellent points, ecasadoSBU. I'm what you would call super old,
and fully appreciate that a portion of my taxes goes to support
all the valuable work done at SBU. I even happily further
support work in education and sciences, because I can and I
think it's important.
Far beyond the world of sports (which I do hope returns safely
in the near future, along with all other life elements being
affected), I'm thankful for the work being done and the entire
community at SBU right here in our backyard.
Thanks, too, to the Chairman for updating this forum with
important news from SBU.
Former Stony Brook star Jameel Warney set to return to his team
in South Korea
Before the NBA suspended play last week because of health
concerns over the COVID-19 virus outbreak in the United States,
former Stony Brook University basketball star Jameel Warney
endured a similar shutdown in South Korea, where he plays for
the Seoul SK Knights.
Warney not only survived the scare in good health but is
preparing for a likely return to Seoul on Sunday as the Korean
Basketball League gears up to resume its season.
“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned,” Warney told
Newsday. “But Korea has done a great job of testing everybody. I
felt safe while I was there.”
The KBL shut down on Feb. 29 after Warney’s team played two
games in an arena with no fans at the height of the outbreak. He
returned in early March to the new home he recently purchased in
Branchburg, New Jersey, but safety concerns in South Korea have
subsided, and Warney is in discussions with his coaches and
agent about returning to the KBL, where he currently is fourth
in scoring (20.4) and rebounding (10.4) in the 10-team league.
“If everything is good, I’m going back,” he said. “I’m still
under contract with them. It’s my job.”
As far as Warney knows, no player in the KBL has tested positive
for COVID-19, which he credits to widespread testing in South
Korea. “I was surprised people in the NBA are receiving it,”
Warney said, referring to the number of NBA players and team
personnel that climbed to 14 announced cases as of Thursday.
“Even [Saints head coach] Sean Payton from the NFL got it. So I
was surprised.”
South Korea has emerged as a leading example for other countries
to follow because of an aggressive testing program that has
helped curb the spread of the virus. According to Science
Magazine, it had administered more than 270,000 tests through
mid-March in a country of 50 million people.
That impressed Warney, who said signs of the pandemic emerged in
early January before peaking in late February. “Korea was ahead
of the curve,” Warney said. “They had an awareness of getting
everyone tested. Their testing process was really easy because
they have free health care. So it didn’t matter if you didn’t
have the proper health care. They would figure out a date for
you [to get tested]. It was just so convenient for everyone.
“You get tested while going to restaurants, going to games,
going inside malls . . . Our team lives in a dorm. Every time
you enter the dorm, they check your temperature. Every time you
walk into a hotel, they have cameras to kind of check your body
out. They have a lot of ways to check it out without actually
getting tested. They also have drive-through testing. You can
see a doctor. You see the numbers are going down amazingly in
the last few weeks.”
The KBL took a two-week break while the FIBA tournament for Asia
was played in early February. When play resumed, Warney’s team
played two home games with no fans before an outbreak in a hotel
housing a visiting team led to the suspension of the season.
“You’re playing in a big arena you always play in, but without
fans,” Warney said. “It was kind of weird, but after the first
few minutes, you kind of get used to it. It’s basketball. The
staff that worked there would check you every time you entered
the arena.”
Last season, Warney left his pro team in China after two months
because he was unhappy with the conditions, but he is delighted
with his KBL experience and plans to return next season,
assuming contract negotiations go well.
“I love the people, love the culture, I love the country, I love
where I’m playing at,” Warney said. “It depends on what’s going
on next year in the world, but I think Europe is going to take a
big hit with this virus. So I think Korea is going to be the hot
spot.”
Because the KBL season has only six weeks to run, including
playoffs, Warney said, “My big worry is getting back, but I
think America is going to do a great job with the virus. People
will be fine if they stay quarantined, stay in the house. Once
people realize this is really serious, they’ll be fine.”
