thank SBU President Andrea Goldsmith’s pioneering wireless
research for helping make it possible. Her groundbreaking work
on adaptive modulation and coding — first published in a
landmark 1995 paper — revolutionized the speed, reliability and
efficiency of wireless communication, paving the way for the
high-performance Wi-Fi, cellular and satellite networks we rely
on today.

Some things i'm hearing out of the new administration (which i'm
super excited about!). These are my opinions and
interpretations, so take it with that please.
-we dont really have clarity on the whole flagship thing, which
is not surprising. it's unclear.
-the pres cares about access, how do we expand? There is
interest, but we need space and faculty. Space could be
Southampton, NYC, etc. We want to build, and we reject 8k
students from NYS alone yearly.
-the mantra is Manhattan to Montauk. NYC is a must for the
future; unclear in what shape or form. Climate Exchange has had
some false starts (new CEO). Perhaps a new hospital in
Southampton.
-the pres brings extremely high energy, and an entrepreneurship
ethos to the university. She wants to hear our ideas and loves
SB. Her experience at Berkeley, Stanford, and Princeton informs
her views. She considers our peers to be Stanford, Berkeley,
Michigan.
-Princeton is a model from a cultural and residential
perspective. For those that have been there- i agree.
-tech tech tech. lean into our strength. SB may be changing
its business model so that there is more transparency and
accountability from various departments. Funding is tight. SB
should be the next silicon valley. We need industry nearby to
do this.
-fed cuts havent impacted SB as much as the IVY, because those
schools get the lion's share to begin with. Many of our cuts
have been reinstated.
-alumni giving is up 30% this year. the $200m matching program
is near max, which is great. Goal is $5b endowment by 2035.
-Homecoming needs better alumni attendance. Sports are
important. School spirit is a problem. Not sure how to fix it
yet.
-SB has excellence in pockets. How to use those strengths to
drag up the rest, and become well rounded?
-our local congressman, Nick LaLota, supports both SB and BNL.

> Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith completed a
series of high-impact meetings in Washington, D.C., in early
December as part of the 2025 SUNY Advocacy Day event, a
systemwide effort to elevate SUNY’s federal priorities. The
event brought together presidents, campus leaders and government
relations professionals from across the SUNY system to highlight
the essential role New York’s public universities play in
research, education and workforce development.
>
> “The DC meetings underscored the strong alignment of SUNY and
Stony Brook’s strategic mission with the nation’s priorities —
from scientific discovery to workforce development. The strong
support we received on Capitol Hill and from the administration
reflects the essential role public universities play in driving
innovation and opportunity for all. I look forward to deepening
these partnerships in the months and years ahead,” said
President Goldsmith.
