Andrea Goldsmith begins tenure as seventh SBU president

“She knows what the potential is for public universities,” he
said. “While she taught at very prestigious private
institutions, deep down she’s a product of the public university
system.”
In the months between her appointment and official start,
Goldsmith has been involved with the University’s affairs such
as preparing the University’s budget and meeting with various
members of the University community.
Executive Vice President and Provost Carl Lejuez said her
proactive approach has already made an impact prior to her
official start date.

President’s Report to the University Senate
HTML https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/pres/from_president/_reports/report_082525.php
ok so this is mostly a stock report written by someone else- but
i'm not in love with this glaring error:
Campus Climate: I sent a message last week [insert link] to the
Stony Brook university community
anyhoo, some highlights including an athletics update, and a
clear commitment to southampton, and beefing up marketing &
social media/branding:
State Budget: The State Budget was approved on May 8, 2025, and
provided a third-straight year of operating aid increases to
SUNY, which cover costs of our labor contracts and provides $360
million in capital for research facilities at the University
Centers.
International Student Visas: The State Department has revoked
over 6,000 student visas this year as part of the Trump
administration’s broader enforcement efforts. At Stony Brook, we
are aware of three students who recently had their visas
revoked—potentially for minor infractions like traffic
violations, though the exact reasons are unclear. Our Office of
Visa and Immigration Services remains committed to advising and
supporting affected students.
Advancement
We closed the 2025 fiscal year with $96.4 million in gifts and
pledges, including 19 transformational gifts of $1 million or
more, four exceeding $5 million, and a record 183 major gifts of
$100,000 or more. This year’s total includes approximately $50
million in endowment commitments.
Since the New York State and Simons Infinity Investment matches
were announced in FY23, we have raised a total of $126.4 million
in endowment support toward our $200 million multi-year goal.
Athletics
The 2025 Stony Brook Athletics Golf Classic was held on July 21,
selling out for the third straight year and raising more than
$112,000 in support of the department.
The first phase of the revitalization project for Joe Nathan
Field and University Field started earlier this month. Thanks to
a $2.5M lead gift, the homes of Stony Brook’s baseball and
softball teams will see significant upgrades this fall.
NYC Presence
Stony Brook is advancing a partnership with New York Law School
to establish a new Manhattan presence that will house the Social
Work program and serve as an interdisciplinary hub for research,
student access, and fundraising.

Pres State of the Univ:
HTML https://video.ibm.com/channel/peWRBYVQA6v
highlights:
-great at upward mobility
-grad rates up 21% since 2014
-price tag remains low
-incoming GPAs average over 95%
-top10 hospital in NYS, #1 in pediatrics
-DEI is in SB's DNA and it drives excellence
-manhattan to montauk focus (climate exchange, NYC, southampton,

-$300m NYS research grant for innovation hub and quantum
research
-need new facilities, looking to grow

just a personal thought- wondering if the $300m grant is related
to goldsmith's telecom experience. the timing and proximity is
telling, i think. thoughts?

Lunch with our student-athlete leaders last month offered more
than just conversation. It reminded me what excellence looks
like when it’s lived across multiple dimensions and how
leadership is forged through listening.
I spent time at each table, asking these student-athletes for
their ideas: How can we enhance the student-athlete experience
at Stony Brook University? How can we engage the broader Seawolf
community in our athletic programs? Their answers were
thoughtful, creative, and deeply informed by their experiences
on the field, in the classroom, and as leaders of their teams.
These students—swimmers, soccer players, cross-country runners,
basketball players, and many more—are not only competing at the
highest levels of collegiate athletics. They are also role
models for their peers, maintaining rigorous academic schedules
and contributing meaningfully to our campus community. Their
discipline, time management, and resilience are remarkable.
These are the same qualities that define strong leaders in any
field and will serve them well throughout their careers
At Stony Brook, we don’t ask our students to choose between
their passions. We support them in pursuing all of them. It’s
one of the many reasons I’m proud to lead New York’s flagship
public university, where academic rigor and athletic ambition go
hand in hand.
To all of our student-athlete leaders: you inspire us. I’ll be
in the stands cheering you on this season, and rooting for your
success long after you leave the field.
Go Seawolves!

Lofty aspirations.
The ones that caught my attention the most is the $5 Billion
endowment and #1 public University. Its going to take a lot of
work to get there. It surely can be achieved though. In 68 years
we climbed to Top 58 national. We can do a lot more in the next
50 years. Hopefully we are all around to witness it.

sure. our endowment is over $521m, and of course, the Simons
gift is about the same size, there's matching, etc.
i believe we are "artificially" high in the rankings- and i dont
say that because i agree with it- but because USNWR has put
heavier weighting on aspects like accessibility, affordability,
etc.
but whatever, i'll take it!

Meet the President: Goldsmith Plans an Ambitious Decade for
Stony Brook
HTML https://news.stonybrook.edu/university/meet-the-president-goldsmith-plans-an-ambitious-decade-for-stony-brook/

She offered a direct view of the sorts of headlines she hopes to
see for Stony Brook in 2035, saying she wants the university to
seize opportunities created by disruption in higher education.
Among her aspirations: broader tuition access for
first-generation students, a deepened entrepreneurship and
innovation system across Long Island and New York City, and a
dramatically larger endowment to support student aid and faculty
recruitment. “I think that Stony Brook and New York State,
driven by Stony Brook, can surpass California as an important
hub,” she said.
Questions throughout the night ranged from the impact of new
investments to the university’s plans for expanding its presence
in New York City and for healthcare on the Stony Brook
Southampton campus. Goldsmith discussed both local and statewide
ambitions, including building healthcare capacity on the
Southampton campus, igniting arts and lifelong learning
initiatives there, and leveraging Stony Brook’s role as the lead
institution for The New York Climate Exchange on Governors
Island as an example of how the university can extend its reach.
