SBU hires a new interim President. Richard McCormick recently
served as President of Rutgers University. As per Snoozeday and
the NYS Chancellor. SBU won't have a new permanent President
until the 25/26 school year. I think that is ridiculous. Does it
take a 1 1/2 to find a permanent replacement? McCormick is big
into Political History and has written a few books on this
subject and is currently writing a book on "American political
corruption from the 17th century". He sounds like a perfect fit
for SBU. I think the former president was a political history
buff also. Anyways. Let's see if this guy cares about sports.
That is all we really care about with this university anyway.
I'm quite certain the new President will be just like the former
President when SBU finally finds one...

Q&A with Stony Brook University Interim President Richard L.
       McCormick
  HTML https://news.stonybrook.edu/university/qa-with-stony-brook-university-interim-president-richard-l-mccormick/
       [quote]
Q: What are your goals as interim president of Stony Brook?
A: Although my title is interim president, my time spent here
will be active and engaged, and I am thrilled to be Stony
Brook’s leader at this exciting time. I believe that, working
together with the entire campus community, we can ensure that
Stony Brook’s permanent president will inherit a university that
is even better than it is today. And that is saying a lot.
My top goal is to maintain Stony Brook’s momentum. President
McInnis and her leadership team advanced Stony Brook on a
phenomenal trajectory of success and exceptional
accomplishments, and I want to keep that moving forward. There
are so many exciting initiatives underway that are bringing
Stony Brook to greater academic and research excellence every
day. I also have some ideas of my own that may not come to
complete fruition during my presidency, but I expect will reveal
some solid recommendations for the new president to consider and
build upon. I look forward to detailing my priorities further at
the State of the University on September 25.
Q: You have led some of the top public universities in the
country. Why is a quality public education so important?
I have spent most of my life on or near the campuses of great
public research universities. I grew up at Rutgers University
where my mother was a longtime administrator and my father was a
history professor, and where I later served on the faculty for
16 years. Then I was at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, followed by the University of Washington in Seattle
and then back to Rutgers, where I served for a decade as
president. And now, here I am at Stony Brook University, where I
feel right at home because I believe deeply in institutions of
this kind. They perform so many essential missions, starting
with the education of our students. That is our first mission.Q:
What advice would you give to those students who are beginning
       their college career this fall?
My top suggestion is to take full advantage of everything this
amazing university has to offer. Of course, go to class, immerse
yourself in your assignments, get involved in research, find
time to volunteer for the campus or local community. There are a
wealth of ways to learn outside of the classroom, and that
includes meeting new people and having fun. Go to football and
basketball games. Attend a lecture offered in your department or
a department you are interested in. Visit places around campus
where art is displayed. Spend time in the library.

Stony Brook University presidential search committee begins
       process to identify next leader
  HTML https://sbstatesman.com/128377/news/stony-brook-university-presidential-search-committee-next-leader/
       [quote]
In an email sent to the campus community on Wednesday, Kevin
Law, the chair of the council and the chair of the newly-formed
presidential search committee, wrote following SUNY policies and
procedures, a presidential search committee has been assembled
and an executive search firm to add in the process has been
       selected.
The search committee will meet for the first time on Sept. 30,
where SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. will give the committee
their formal assignment — setting the agenda for the committee
       moving forward.
Law also wrote that they hired the firm Spencer Stuart to aid in
their search. Michele Haertel, who heads the firm’s Education
and Social Impact practice will be a search partner for the
committee, as well as Nordia Edwards, Ponneh Varho and Michael
Steck, all staff members at Spencer Stuart.
The firm’s staff members working on the search will be visiting
the campus in late September to meet with “key student, staff
and faculty representatives to get information that will assist
the committee in shaping a position profile,” Law wrote. “This
profile will then be used to market Stony Brook to a highly
qualified pool of candidates from across the nation.”
Comments and suggestions on the qualifications for the next
president of Stony Brook can be sent to
       PresidentialSearch@stonybrook.edu, while nominations for the
position can be submitted to StonyBrookPres@SpencerStuart.com.

We Can Do It Together: Interim President McCormick Delivers
       State of the University Address
  HTML https://news.stonybrook.edu/university/we-can-do-it-together-interim-president-mccormick-delivers-state-of-the-university-address/
       [quote]
-Stony Brook has been attracting a growing and highly diverse
student body with half who are from economically disadvantaged
       families
-Stony Brook has a large and expanding research enterprise that
is fueled by more than $300 million annually, mostly from the
       federal government
-Stony Brook graduates and research have a profound impact on
the economies of Long Island, New York, the nation and the world
Praising the university’s philanthropic efforts — including
securing $655 million dollars in contributions this year —
McCormick also acknowledged the passing of Jim Simons, who with
his wife, Marilyn Simons, has impacted Stony Brook University
with their visionary generosity for generations to come.
McCormick recognized Stony Brook Medicine for greatly
contributing to the health and wellness of the Long Island
community. “They do so through the proud stewardship of the Long
Island State Veterans Home, and a myriad of other health care
programs that are carried on at Stony Brook University Hospital,
our Children’s and East End hospitals, and in more than two
hundred ambulatory care facilities,” he said. “Stony Brook
University Hospital is one of the first eight hospitals in the
United States to attain Health Care Equity Certification from
The Joint Commission. It is Long Island’s only institution to
achieve this level of certification and demonstrates Stony
Brook’s commitment to embracing diversity, addressing health
disparities, and providing equitable, patient-centered care.”
While celebrating the university’s momentum, McCormick
identified institutional challenges, including the need to:
       -expand and encourage more interdisciplinary research;
-Invest in the university’s facilities to support the needs of a
       true flagship university; and
-make strategic decisions about increasing our enrollment as a
first-choice destination for both undergraduate and graduate
       students
McCormick announced that this year, Stony Brook will launch a
new Shared Resources Organization to design and develop
high-performance computing, establish a $10 million Stony Brook
Venture Fund, create an Angel Network, and begin to make
translational grants so that researchers have what they need “to
propel their discoveries beyond the campus, into business or
health care or anywhere their findings can advance the solution
       to human problems.”
Noting that Stony Brook faces a staggering $2 billion in
deferred maintenance, McCormick said a comprehensive facilities
master planning process has begun in order to improve the
facilities on campus. “I promise to use my time and influence as
president doing everything I can to persuade state leaders to
meet our need for new and better facilities,” he said. “The
state cannot have the flagship university it wants in the
       buildings we now have.”
Pointing to Stony Brook’s 90 percent retention rate and growing
enrollment, McCormick said the university must take steps to
support all students, including improved housing. “My
administration is hard at work developing solutions that will
meet our student housing needs for the future, and I pledge
vigorously to seek the outside help we must have to achieve this
       goal,” he said.
McCormick also announced the establishment of a Stony Brook
Future Scholars Program that would identify a hundred or more
rising eighth graders who are enrolled in disadvantaged local
       school districts.

McCormick discusses University facilities, free speech and
       academic growth in exclusive interview
  HTML https://sbstatesman.com/129543/news/mccormick-discusses-university-facilities-free-speech-and-academic-growth-in-exclusive-interview/
       [quote]
McCormick: The position had me intrigued. Everybody knows this
is a terrible time to be a University President, amid opposition
to higher education, protests on campus and unsolvable problems.
My wife came here first; she accepted a position as the director
of development for the School of Communication and Journalism.
She’s been here since last March, and I got to know the
University through her. Sometime after [former President] Maurie
McInnis resigned, the Chancellor of the State University of New
York (SUNY) system, John B. King, Jr., inquired to Stony Brook’s
administration about who they thought would make a good interim
       president.
The Statesman: What are your biggest goals while serving as
interim president — what would you like to see accomplished
       during your tenure?
McCormick: We are a fine university, we have fine research
facilities, but we have an opportunity to be great. We need to
make significantly more investments in research facilities, and
shared resources for researchers and we need to do a lot more to
stimulate interdisciplinary research. Most important problems in
the world, such as climate change, can only be solved through
interdisciplinary research. They’re transcendent issues, and so
we need to do more to encourage research across the disciplines
and teaching that way too. I’m particularly interested in
inspiring more collaboration between the researchers on the East
campus studying health sciences and those on the West campus.
The second area I want to focus on is our facilities on campus.
The College of Business in Harriman Hall looks like a high
school that was built in the 1960s and hasn’t been cared for
since. The School of Social Welfare [is] all on one floor, and
it’s not in good shape. The School of Dental Medicine has been
in the same temporary facilities for the past 51 years. We have
two billion dollars in deferred maintenance.
We can’t solve this problem without extra support from the New
York State government and SUNY [system], and to some extent,
private partners as well. We have submitted information to New
York State for our top four priorities for new facilities, and
we’ve given them a great deal of information about the resources
we need. I’ve had two conversations with Governor Kathy Hochul,
and she came to campus when the flooding took place in
mid-August. I have invited her back, and I hope she will come to
       campus again.
McCormick: Because we anticipate, like university campuses all
over the country have, that there will be protests this year. If
all the future protests that occurred were peaceful, then that
would be wonderful. But, things may get rough again, and if that
occurs, we will try everything to de-escalate the situation. If
students are making more noise than they should, if they’re
blocking entrances to buildings, if they’re interfering with
somebody else’s gathering, we will make every effort to dissuade
       them from doing so.
Arresting students would be my last resort. I’ve never had to do
that. I think I would collapse in tears if I had to, so I’ll do
everything I can to prevent that.
I wasn’t here on May 1, but the administration then went through
several steps to avoid arrests. They told the protesters to
please leave, please make way for the students who reserved the
Staller Steps. And the students who didn’t move basically agreed
that they wanted to be arrested. I hope that doesn’t happen
       again.
McCormick: Well, I guess you could say that we’re near the
beginning of that conversation. We’re hoping to alert people
within SUNY and New York State to Stony Brook’s needs, and we’re
in the process of seeking a meeting with Carl Heastie, the
speaker of the New York State Assembly, to try and make it clear
that new buildings and repairing the buildings we already have
       are our top priority.
When Governor Hochul came to visit after the flash flooding took
place, I had sort of a sidebar conversation with her and invited
her to come back. She said something pleasant, like what a
governor would say but didn’t promise anything. If she comes
back, we’d love to show her a few of our buildings and make our
case to her. Tell her that you designated us a flagship
university, but we can’t be a flagship in these buildings.
McCormick: Well, I hope the search for a permanent president
takes a while. I like it here. I like going to work every day,
and I will respond to these challenges until my time here is up.
I worked as a university professor, so I will probably do that
       for a few more years.
I don’t have to do that in New Jersey, though I could if I
wanted to, I wouldn’t be a full member of the faculty — I’d be
retired. But my daughter is in school here. My wife is employed
here, and it’s certainly possible that we can stay here. I can’t
say that we have decided yet.
