Does that really matter? VT is well managed balance team. Next
man up.

I wonder why Stony Hasn't offered Jordan a scholarship. The top
player on Long Island.

8:29 to 1:06 of the second half - no field goals made. Just four
Garcia free throws. 18-4 run for Vermont.
In Garcia’s 39 minutes, he went 6 for 8 with 14 points in the
first half ... and 0 for 1 with only six free throws in the
second. How does that happen?
Rest of the team was 5 for 21 in the first half.

Interesting breakdown, and yes just seemed very odd that Garcia
disappeared offensively in the 2nd half. Yet, of course, SBU did
briefly take the lead too in that half. This SBU team feels like
it just goes from streaky good to streaky bad on offense so
often, no matter what sample size you examine.
On the other end, UVM must be thinking if Lamb had only had an
average game this one would have been another easy cruise
throughout. Good grief he took some terrible, and
terrible-looking, shots. Told the fan next to me who was
watching SBU for the first time, "believe it or not, that guy is
going to be POY." The response, "Really? THAT guy? Why?"
Was looking at the first half vs second half shot charts. In the
first half UVM about 6/10 from very close vs SBU 6/13 from very
close (same number of makes, but simply put SBU missed a good
number of layups). Second half UVM 6/8 from very close, SBU 3/8.
When UVM gets the ball down low they convert, SBU often does
not. To add, I would say too that UVM's close shots often
differed from SBU in that it feels like SBU relies on 100%
one-on-one post moves/brute strength to score down low vs UVM
relying on that plus equally precise interior passing for
probably easier inside shots. When UVM guys had a heavy body on
them or a double team down low, they often pass to a teammate
all alone vs SBU players who usually try to explode/force a more
difficult shot.
In the big picture that felt like the striking difference
between the two teams for me: both teams play solid defense,
both pass reasonably well to get open 3s, but whereas SBU relies
heavily on one-on-one dribble/force to create shots in those
other situations (and not just inside, but outside too) UVM very
often relies on precise passing to create those other, easier
shots from closer range.
Of course the backbreaker was the stretch from 4:18 to 1:49 in
the second half: 4 3s from UVM (3 by Duncan) vs 2 freethrows by
Garcia and 3 turnovers by SBU. Game over.

Garcia seems to take smart shots while driving to the rim. Lots
of good things happen off of that scenario (including baskets
and/or fouls). He's not one to quickly chuck it up from deep
downtown (we have a guy that seems to do that). The more Garcia
is our focus the better we do (IMHO). Gueye took and missed a
couple of good driving shots and I'd like to see him shooting a
lot more (not necessarily the 3-pointer he hit).
Stephenson-Moore is a keeper.

Aside from UVM really tightening the D around the arc and
interior-wise, Garcia was gassed out there. He usually plays
about 28-30 mins per night, and he was 10 mins over that. Plus,
the guy battled so hard to contain Lamb the entire night (and
did a GREAT job), that this zapped his energy even more. No
excuse for not running the offense through Garcia every
possession down the stretch, but I noticed that he just ran out
of gas towards the end. You can't fault him; he was a stud out
there.

yep. it's been happening all year. the offense probably should
run through him. i said it earlier this year- he is our MVP.

sounds like the consensus here is that we have poor shot
selection, and don't pass the ball. i agree.
* * *
i skipped around the replay but here's what i saw. there were
at least three attempts that were on the line, and ruled a 2.
all missed. and that 4man took many shots from 7 feet beyond
the arc, and a result, misses the rim a lot more than he hit it.
throw in an airball or two.
and yes i saw the bank shot. one that, had there been no glass,
wouldve been an airball-long. the real #s are starting to look
very different than the box shows.
in some cases, we didnt work the ball inside first- nay, didnt
even get it to anyone else, just bring it down, and chuck. add
in a low % shot from deep behind the line (is there ever a real
incentive to shoot from there?), in traffic, off balance,
rushing when no urgency, feet landing in a different place than
left from.
one in fact didnt even graze iron.
one attempt- and this wasnt even the most egregious- was taken
from riverhead.

two misses went the other way for a dagger three.
and i didnt even see the whole game.
pass. the. ball.

I can't remember when it happened, but there was one telling
play that I thought was significant last night:
Miles drove to the basket and got double-teamed, he snapped a
quick lob to the basket into empty air that sailed out of
bounds. It was intended for Mo, who simply didn't move to the
basket. They exchanged a couple of words down the floor that I
took to be Miles asking him why he didn't break to the basket.
Small mishap, isolated miscommunication? Maybe. But seems to me
SBU simply doesn't think about or put these things together
often...at least not to the extent we see a team like UVM doing
them.
I'm just relying on a vague memory, but was Woodhouse the last
(the only?) SBU guy to be a really effective playmaker who got
others involved? I know the fanbase here can pile on to what I'm
about to say with all the weaknesses (which I probably agree
with), but the only guy I can think of who seems to have this in
mind on this team and that we have seen from him **sometimes**
is McKenzie. Maybe Warney, who developed into a pretty good
passer from the post about his last year? I guess obvious, but I
just don't put together SBU and "good passing."

Miles made the right pass and Mo never saw it coming. Which
makes me think even if SB had a better passing PG, the benefit
would be marginal because none of their 4's and 5's can score
consistently on the inside.
By the way, coach ford should adopt the policy of "make or
miss", if you take a shot from Riverhead, you sit for the rest
of the half.
