Well ... we won. But not emphatically at all. That was a grind.
You can really feel Jeff pressing. He lost his starting job and
tonight was arguably the low point of his time here. After he
fouled up, he walked up the tunnel behind the bench for a few
minutes before returning. He's frustrated. And we are as fans
because he could be such a difference maker defensively if he
could stay on the floor.
Second straight game against UML that Gueye has been in foul
trouble. Not good. We saw a small ball lineup for extended time,
which we haven't seen much of since last year.
Big big big minutes from the freshman guards. Career highs in
points and minutes for TSM – the latter is eye popping. 32 big
minutes. He's going to be a really good player here over the
next three years and change. And a big bucket and two key FTs
for TPP. I like 'em both.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from tonight: Obadiah Noel is the
REAL DEAL.
Turnovers in our last four: 10, 11, 9, 14. We can live with
that. We won the turnover battle in each of those games, albeit
against the AE's bottom dwellers. Still, we had trouble closing
this game out because of the pressure they put on our guards,
and I just have this sneaking suspicion that the lack of a
legitimate ballhandler is going to bite us somewhere along the
line. Foreman can do it but isn't a true 1 – Noel picked his
pocket late as he was trying to dribble it out. MacKenzie just
isn't enough of a threat and he keeps getting trapped in a
corner against the press. I wish we had a steadier hand.
Foreman had a tough shooting night, but I like that he began
attacking the goal once he missed his first five or six threes.
He's not a great finisher at the rim but he's one of few guys on
our team who will take a pull-up jumper. He grinded his way into
double figures.
Elijah leads us in points, rebounds and assists. Who was the
last Seawolf to do that?

agreed to all.
just once i'd like to see garcia smile- he's my favorite player
on this team (one board away from a double double tonight).
subtle but i think UML went into a zone with 5min left, is that
odd?
great night from the freshmen. ola was on a different level
tonight. also great FTs tonight! a monster 12 steals and
points off TOs. GO SB

Was able to attend the game last night and those were two of my
biggest takeaways. No doubt some creeping frustration among
fans, maybe the team as well, regarding how hard it all seems to
be this season. Every good team has to occasionally grind out a
win (UVM recently at Maine, for example) and that's probably a
good sign--good teams can often win on bad nights. But it feels
like EVERY game is a grind for SBU. Yeah, they get the wins for
the most part, but sheesh. Just doesn't feel like this team will
ever have a game that's easy with garbage time for our friends
at the end of the bench.
Jeff O. just simply looked very bad and out of sorts (only
played 7 mins and fouled out?....oh my). I hope he can work
through whatever it is. I probably missed the specific intel on
this, but the extensive, bulky wrap he wears can't be pleasant.
On the flip, with Miles out, Foreman off, and the bigs mostly
absent, a lot fell on the other three guards. And to be frank,
as a whole, they were somewhere along the line of good to
serviceable. I'm guessing TSM had his best game so far, and
while he wasn't spectacular by any means at 20+ minutes and a
reasonable stat line Mac served the team well as a whole. In the
long run their collective minutes and performance could be a
good thing.
Olaniyi was a monster, as was Noel. Almost felt like one-on-one
with the other players just taking up space. As per the ESPN
info I posted about POY, Olaniyi is "top competition" behind
Lamb right now? I don't know...feels like co-favs to me.
Future watch: obviously we keep tabs on UVM. Their Saturday game
is at Hartford. Are the Hawks really good and will they rally
from a disappointing loss to tighten up the top of the
standings? UVM probably has only two challenging games left in
the regular season--the Hartford game and SBU. My bet is they
win both, remote chance they lose one, no way they lose both.
They sit at the top with one or two losses at the end. SBU has
to win out to have a shot at the regular season title....

Agreed Fred we have to win now from here on out. Struggling
against lower ranked AE teams is not going to do it . Hartford
lost last night so we sit in 2nd place in the conference
behind UVM . I see UVM going all the way to the AE playoffs
with no losses . That game on the 20th is our first round play
of game. Beat UVM on our court and gain an invite to the NIT .
Honestly looking at our quality of play lately I dont know if
we can do it.

Yeah, these last few games are not encouraging. There’s a reason
why the AE is only taken seriously for two teams — and when
you’re one of them, how the hell are you struggling this much
against schools that are quite literally some of the worst in
D1? Us and Vermont supposed to be so much better than the AE
reputation - so why are we playing AE-level ball against them?
The lack of turnovers is encouraging, and the FT performance
last night was hopefully a sign of things to come.
I was shocked when Geno didn’t use Ochefu after Jeff and Mo were
on the bench. The first possession that happened, Lowell
immediately hit a three. The 3-ball hasn’t been falling for a
while now - we were so good in noncon and the first few games of
conference play but that Hartford game really threw off the
offensive momentum.
