coaching. The other 50% has to do with the CAA and AE
conference. If SB wants to make a name for itself in Athletics,
they need to try and get an invite into a bigger name, highly
respected conference. I think SB would be best suited in the MAC
east conference for all sports. Not a highly respected
conference but a conference that is doable and a good start for
SB..But that is news for another day..

Regarding Conference upgrade, I'm assuming that you're talking
the MAAC. In basketball right now, KenPom ranks the MAAC at
23/32 conferences, where the AE is at 25/32. To me, spending
the money and effort to move to the MAAC, is not worth the
returns. If we are planning on moving at some point, I think
the most logical move would be a jump to the A10, which is
ranked 9/32 by Kenpom. Much bigger jump, much more prestigious,
and would be worth the $ and effort, IMO. The CAA, ranked
18/32, would be a smaller, safer move, but I'm sure Hofstra
would try and veto that.

Nope. Not MAAC, MAC....

Hofstra is getting a new President. I wouldnt be surprised if
they vote SB in. If all else fails, go all-in with the CAA for
all sports. If SB football ever becomes a powerhouse school,
then move up to the FBS

Oh, OK. Much better conference - 12/32 on KenPom for bball -
but I don't think it would make sense from a travel logistics
standpoint. Not only for us, but everyone in that Conf. I
couldn't see that happening, but as well know, stranger things
have happened.

True. UB would be SB closest school, and I could see Buffalo
being the new rivalry team.

The all-sport CAA is just a lateral move. Still a one bid league
and now the competition is even harder to get the one bid.
A-10 and FBS independence is an option, although UConn and UMass
utterly failed as independents and I’m not sure how much that
has to do with independence versus poor leadership

Regarding the CAA you're correct. I see no value in moving from
the AE to the CAA right now. That conference has some internal
issues they need to work out as you have northern vs southern
schools, football vs non football, public vs private, etc. Once
JMU goes FBS in a few years (it's going to happen no point
denying it) I expect some serious shuffling in that conference.
Their TV deal does them no favor either. I wouldn't be too
surprised if a couple schools wind up moving back over to the AE
because of this (Delaware and Towson used to be in the
conference for instance).
Sticking solely to basketball/Olympic sports, I think it should
be A10 or bust. THAT would be a significant upgrade athletic
department wide and we wouldn't need to touch football. That
could stay in the CAA for as long as it needs to. IMO stay in
the AE and build up our program here before moving up to an A10
level conference or an FBS conference. Others like the MAAC,
CAA, etc. offer nothing the AE doesn't have. This conference
isn't the best with deadweights like Maine and New Hampshire
dragging the conference ratings down, but I think we have a good
home here overall for now.
Football is a whole other conversation and there's ALOT that
could happen. I will say that continuing to have Coach P run
this program is hurting fan interest, which is our biggest
weakness right now. I want to be FBS, but I have a hard time
justifying that when nobody is coming to the games. I'm all
aboard FBS and I think we'd be stupid not to take an invite if
offered, but we need butts in the seats right now and I'm
convinced that wont happen as long as Coach P is in charge.
FBS independence is an option, Liberty going their own way in
doing so proves that. Plus you've got Uconn and Umass out there.
Granted I think doing so as an independent in the northeast
isn't wise. Unless the goal was to form a new conference with
Uconn, Umass, etc I would stay in the CAA. UConn going
independent makes sense since they can put their Basketball in
the Big East while holding out hope for a Big Ten or ACC invite.
Umass doesn't have that luxury.
A lot will change for FBS football over the next five year. The
current CFP contract is ending around that time and a new one
will need to be renegotiated, potentially with more conferences.
Plus there's all sorts of movement happening right now. UConn
left the American so the AAC may need to add someone to replace
them. Boise State isn't happy with the Mountain West conference
right now and may move. There's the whole big thing with Texas,
Oklahoma, and the Big 10/SEC and whether or not they'll move.
The Pac-12 is falling behind revenue wise and needs to make some
moves. JMU will go FBS. People are calling for NDSU to go
FBS.... there's a whole lot that will shake out over the next
five or so years and all that movement will likely open up a
good spot for SBU somewhere after the domino effect. We need to
be well positioned to land somewhere good and I think Heilbron
is doing well in that regard with the exception of keeping Coach
P around for football. He has to go.
Finally the Atlantic Sun conference is trying to do some weird
realignment move by splitting off and forming a new conference.
Very similar to the Big East/American Athletic Conference split
back in 2013. No idea how that will play out as I think Liberty
is a big part of that and they're FBS for football so we'll see.
My longshot hot take is that this A-Sun split is a way to form a
new southeast/east coast FBS conference. Something that SBU
should definitely try to get in on if that's indeed what's going
on. Interesting times ahead. Link to the A-Sun article is below:

It’s college football in the northeast. Nobody cares. UMass had
BYU - a reputable team - in town this year and 8,204 people
showed up. Stadium is 500 feet from maybe the largest student
residential area in New England. On top of that, we would get
little to no D-I caliber local talent ... because there is none.
Can’t do it. FCS is perfect.

If SB somehow someway got BYU to show up at LaValle stadium. I
belive there would be the largest attendance yet. SB gets more
respect then Umass football.

Amherst is also in the middle of nowhere
If, say UConn were to come to LaValle, the crowds would be
humongous. Or Army.
The FCS will always have the stink of being substandard, “not
real D1”, fighting an uphill battle for even the slightest of
recognition

Coach P must go. This football program is stuck in the mud
because of him. SH will have a huge decision to make once coach
P contract is set to renew. My thinking is. If coach P continues
with his run up the gut, ground and pound with JV style of
playing SH will have no choice but to not renew his contract.
remember, President Stanley is gone and a lot can change with SB
finds a replacement. Hopefully, he/she is a sports-minded
President..

Heilbron's judgement would have to seriously be called into
question if he brought Coach P back again. Anything short of an
FCS semi-final appearance should get Coach P canned. This past
season should have had him removed if we didn't make the
boneheaded move of extending him the prior year. Coach P is not
the guy who will get SBU football to the next level. The teams
aren't winning and attendance is putrid(especially student
attendance, what the hell is that?). Something must be done.
