Here's what I'd like to say: on our best day, we have shown that
we can win on the defending champions' home floor. If that
doesn't excite you, then I'm at a loss. We can do it, guys.
Just like there are hot and cold shooting nights, tip-to-buzzer
energy and periods where it is lacking, there are ups and downs
in the season. Not even two weeks ago, there was talk on this
board of getting home court advantage, going 16-0 in conference
(!), and of Geno jumping to a major conference school at
season's end. And then we lose a couple games and the whole year
is lost. Let's all take a step back and acknowledge that we're
still in a very good position right now as a modest to
significant favorite in our next five games, which would get us
to 9-2 heading into the Vermont rematch.
I know ... Bingo at home ... AGAIN. On our worst day, it's clear
we can lose to anybody.
So where does that leave us for Wednesday? I dunno. We should
win ... shouldn't we?
Lowell's been a SIEVE defensively, giving up 104 to Maine, 101
to Albany and 92 to Vermont in their last three. That's 99 A
NIGHT in COLLEGE basketball. We accomplished a similar feat in
2013 when we beat Detroit 104-102 in triple overtime, just two
days after Toledo hung 103 on us, but otherwise, we've only
surrendered 100 one other time in 20-plus years at the Division
I level – a 107-59 loss to Maryland back in 2000. Juan Dixon,
Steve Blake, Lonnie Baxter, Drew Nicholas, that lot.
The River Hawks' two-headed monster is for real. As a first team
all conference pick, we knew about Lutete, who can beat you
inside and out. He certainly has more of a propensity to post
up, which we saw more from Yeboah than we will from Garcia and
Olaniyi. His stroke from deep is smooth too. I mean, 51 points
in regular time against LIU? That is a guy who has an appetite
for scoring. But it's Noel who's really come on, adding on to
what was a nice sophomore campaign. He's very quick with the
ball and has a solid mid-range game. Both he and Lutete average
more than 20 a night in conference play.
But there's a dropoff. Gantz is a spare part. Mitchell and
Withers will be key pieces alongside Noel next year. From what
I've seen of Mitchell, he's a good athlete. And Withers' numbers
are really solid for a freshman a la Tinsley for Bingo. Withers
is a little scrawnier. Darius Henderson (6-9/230) transferred to
Montana after nine games this year, and although he wasn't a
major force, he was still a wide body underneath. They also lost
last year's third leading scorer, Alex Rivera, who transferred
to LIU Brooklyn in the offseason.
For those who are clamoring for us to pound it inside, this is
the game for you. I feel like we've always been able to
outmuscle Lowell, and they really lack physicality inside. See
the big guy right in the middle of their team photo. That's
Henderson – no longer listed underneath. That leave Withers and
Gantz, and then Allin Blunt, who was an acclaimed prospect but
hasn't really materialized in Lowell. Lowell's gotten KILLED on
the glass in conference play – minus 7.8 per game over the first
six, including -14.5 over the last two. I expect we'll have
similar success.
In their two wins, the opposition was held to 41 percent
shooting in both. In the four losses? All over 50 percent.
Vermont just ran roughshod over them in the paint, outscoring
UML 40-20. I don't see a good reason why we shouldn't be
similarly aggressive going to the hoop.
I feel good about us rebounding – like actual rebounding and
then rebounding from last week's bitter defeat. But who knows.
I'm hopeful anyway.

I'm still seething over the Binghamton loss, but hopefully,
dropping to 3rd in the Conference, will light a fire, and get us
back on track.
UML was only down 10 to UVM a couple of minutes into the 2nd
half, before falling apart. UVM is weaker than last year, IMO,
and I think overall, there's a lot more parity in the league
than we've seen in a number of years. After 6 (or 7) games,
every team has at least 2 conference wins, and everybody but UVM
has 2 conference losses. My point is, long way to go, and we
need to literally take it one game at a time. Let's forget the
schedule, forget the scoreboard watching, and just focus on
beating UML tomorrow night. Our place in the standings will
take care of itself.

One thing I'd like to see is for Elijah to drive to the hoop,
put his foot in the ground and elevate for a mid-range jumper.
He's shown that he can knock it down but it's seldom off the
dribble. Sometimes he gets a head of steam toward the hoop, runs
into trouble and puts up a well contested shot around the rim.
Foreman does a nice job getting inside the defense and hitting
the 8-14 footer. I wonder if Elijah can. Nobody's going to stop
it if he does. I'd love to see him go to work on the block and
develop a fadeway J too.

This game should be a test to see how good our ladies really
are. A win, or better yet a blowout of UMASS Lowel then these
girls should tiptoe into the NCAA and make some noise.

They have a couple pretty good wins if you go by NET – double OT
over Bucknell (60) and on a neutral floor over Western Michigan
(132). A lot of bad ones too – six wins over teams ranked 300 or
worse, including Hofstra and 0-20 Hartford. Lowell's all right
(219). It's pretty awesome to see where O'Boyle and McCombs have
taken the program after some lean years.
The men open as a five-point favorite tomorrow.
