Hofstra's decision to close down football benefited everyone.
That money ended up going towards the medical school, which in
turn placed tons of med students in hospitals across the island
that needed help. I for one can attest to that after stints at
LIJ some years back, where Hofstra med students were in and out
of the room constantly. Good for the school to realize one thing
was failing and that something else could come from it. Now SBU
does not need to do that as we have a great Hospital and med
program.

I've been tracking LIU's offers, not much on the commitment
front, and the ones they get are players flooded with NAIA and
DII offers. Limited resources financially, the stadium is
smaller than LaValle, tiny press box, no suites, every seat is
bleachers which means your ass is frozen and in pain come
November time. The odds of LIU becoming a powerhouse are almost
the same as good ole' Chuck taking over the South Carolina
vacancy.

Yeah, I agree. I dont see LIU become a powerhouse neither. My
point was. If SB can find a way to bring in some really good top
FCS level recruiter. SB fans can fill LaValle stadium . Long
Islanders are very hungry for that and would support SB. Let's
get at least one player drafted too. That is also a dagger for
athletes. They see SB never had a single player drafted. Why
would they come here.

They were going to have one drafed last year. Sam Kamara.
Jets and Giants scouts came for opening night against Bryant,
specifically for him. Jets spoke to him last year, and I spoke
to the scout a couple times. They were really interested in
using a late-round pick on him. The injury suffered during his
third sack at URI, which cost him the season, cost him from
becoming the first NFL draft pick. Scouts eventually stopped
coming. The Titans were supposed to come for homecoming but
didn't show. No one was set to show for UNH, Falcons didn't show
for Towson, and no one was set to come for Albany. They
literally stopped coming, or even saying they would, by the time
homecoming rolled around.

That's horrible. I feel really bad for him. The same thing
happend to Timon Parris. Timmon had a shot but broke his leg, I
believe when SB played FAU??? I believe.
Upper-level FCS teams consistently have players drafted in the
FCS year after year. JSU, NDSU, SDSU, etc. With SB, they are
lucky to have maybe one player who could be a late rounder every
5 or so years. Just the Chucky cheese bad luck. He needs to
go!!!!

Never got to meet Timon but hear he's a really nice guy. Sam is
one of the nicest guys on the team, very open and honest, always
answers questions no matter what. I Felt terrible after his
injury, which as a media member is frowned upon, but he's such a
nice guy. Hope he bounces back and makes it to the NFL.

LIU isn't a threat at all to overtake Stony Brook. Only annoying
thing about them is that they prevent us from saying Stony Brook
is the only D1 football program on Long Island. I wonder how
their hockey misfire is going.
There's also no reason why Stony Brook football isn't already
well known across the entirety of Long Island, especially
Suffolk County. Goes to show how bad the promotional/marketing
department has been that they haven't been able to establish it
as a firm part of Long Island culture. People from all across
the island should be begging to watch Stony Brook football
games. It should have great meaning to the county and the
island.

I think there is a desire for college football in LI- the market
is there. The team has to be fun to watch I hate to say. People
don't watch college football for dominant defense alone. As
somebody who spent three years watching SBU football games and
is now in Big 10 country, I think college football can grow in
LI. I (shockingly) agree with Hammertime for once- having a
player drafted will be huge for the program. I'm hoping Sam has
a good year this spring.

good discussion here- while i do think there are too many
distractions on LI, traffic, average competition, bad weather,
and a disaffected student body- and now a pandemic- there are 3m
people out there.
somehow we have to figure out how to get 12k into a stadium.
when the U has almost 30k students and faculty.

On a Saturday afternoon, it shouldn't be hard to get 10,000 fans
into a stadium to watch football (Pre-Covid of course).
Especially as you point out, 3,000,000 people live on Long
Island. Math is not my strong suit, but lets play a little game
of numbers. Let's say one-third of the Island dislikes sports
and or football. Another 1,000,000 or so work, go out of town or
are either too young or too old to attend. Purely hypothetical
here, but that still leaves another 1,000,000 who might be able
to attend games. No excuse why 1% aren't at the games.

Lots of great ideas in this thread on how to boost attendance
and get this program to the next level. I believe the biggest
and best ones would be to bring in a coach who plays an exciting
brand of football. We pay Coach P high FCS/low end FBS coach
money to get five wins out of it. I say we go after a
coordinator from a Big 12 school and have him change the culture
around here. They score like it's nobody's business down there.
Simply improving the product on the field would go a long way in
getting the house packed again. Better coaching gets us in the
win column more often which means more fan support, better
recruiting, deeper playoff runs and a football program that
actually matches the university. SBU is an elite university. No
reason we should have a trash football team with nobody in the
stands every weekend. Especially when we play in a damn good
conference. If we can't get the students to turn out (we can fix
that, student section was packed a decade ago), we can at least
get the community to turn out. With 3M people on LI, it's not
too much of a stretch to get 12K (or 20K ideally, you know where
I stand on a move to FBS) into the stands. Make it happen!

Absolutely. But that all hinges on University itself. If Shawn
Heilbron wants to continue to break bread with old man Chuck,
then forget it. Maybe he needs to go as well? It was my
understanding Chucky was influential in bringing SH on board.
That's a Moxie moran, don't you think?? Being a state school is
also part of the problem. Too many favoritism and you scratch my
back I scratch your back bonding runs rampant here. They aren't
looking out for the fans or the culture of the game. It's all
about being pals, chumps, part of the club thing. Trust me, I
used to see how it goes in this organization. Clean house and
bring in all-new personal and start fresh. I also agree with
bringing in coaches from Big 12. SB's new President is from that
part of the woods. maybe she can. Naaaa, I doubt it. This is
Stony Brook University. Not the Texas Longhorns!!!

this math has been run here many times.... so this is helpful,
thanks!
i think last time around i added that not all fans are equal.
is the ticketholder staying? buying $40 worth of concessions or
merchandise? taking up valuable parking?
is it a freshman in the student section? making noise and
wearing red? distracting place kickers?
we need the kid that will tailgate in the lot, go to the game,
and then straight to the bench, if we are going to build the
atmosphere that we want (of course, with that, comes problems).
but we also need the alum or local fan that will bring their
family and friends, tailgate, donate, golf fundraiser, buy a
box, etc.
just some things to think about.
