We haven't beaten Hofstra since Warney left, and it feels like
we have the horses to do it this year.
You may look at Hofstra's 28-point loss at St. Bonaventure and
think they're ripe for us, but they played in a sold-out arena
that is known in the A-10 as being difficult to play in. And
after the game, Mihalivich didn't talk about missed shots,
defensive breakdowns, turnovers, any of that. He talked about
effort, attitude, toughness. I'm guessing he had their undivided
attention afterward and in practice leading up to this one.
We have to keep these guys off the line. This is one of those
teams that makes more free throws than their opponents attempt �
Hofstra's 168-219; opponents just 103-146. That's +6.5 points
from the line every game. Massive. And we've seen this year
after year. As you see above, we made just THREE free throws in
our last game with them. Over our three-game skid in this
series, we've been outscored 50-22 from the stripe.
But it should also be noted that ... wait for it ... we shoot
more free throws than our opponents attempt too! We actually
foul less! While we haven't made as many as Hofstra has, we've
given up fewer trips to the line.
I think we're really starting to see the benefits of having
Otchere and/or Gueye out there at all times. For Brown, you saw
guys passing out of the paint, even if O/G were nowhere near
them. Our guards can really press up knowing that the twin
towers are back there. All told, we're in the top 50 nationwide
in FG% defense at .382 and tied for 27th in blocks per game
(5.3).
Somebody mentioned Latimer in the Brown thread. In the second
half, my son said it was "one of his worst games" just basing
his opinion on the point total. But it was him who drew Anderson
defensively, and as far as his offensive production, the best
part about this team is that he CAN be one of our top scorers
but he doesn't NEED to be. He doesn't NEED to play 32 minutes a
game like he did a year ago because we have TPP, a reliable PG
in Mac, hopefully TSM soon, Otchere on the floor a little more,
Gueye and Ochefu to spell them. Geno is really utilizing the
entire roster.
For Hofstra, I love Buie's game. He's just that squirt who keeps
the ball alive with his dribble, can knife through defenders out
front to finish at the rim with either hand, to knock down a
mid-range jumper, and shoots it well enough where you can't
simply lay off him. And he's going to bounce off people and get
to the line, where he's lethal. Just ask UCLA, who watched him
go 13 for 13 en route to 29 points in Hofstra's win. It's good
to see him shine with ball-dominant JWF off to greener pastures.
Defensively he's a gnat as well. We'll have to be careful with
the ball, including the bigs underneath.

Very interesting stats regarding fouls and free throw shooting
attempts.
I tend agree with your son - although you're right that Latimer
doesn't need to be the big scorer on this team, he's the one guy
on this team who I feel hasn't shown much improvement over last
year. That said, I was happy that he scored those late 7 points
vs. Brown, just to buoy him up a bit, because I think we'll need
him to be successful.
With Hofstra's Foreman no longer there, and with our own version
of "Foreman", I see this more of a pickem' game, and certainly
winnable.
As an aside, my son just texted me, and told me that Elijah is
42nd in the nation in scoring. Not too shabby.
P.S. What's the skinny on TSM? Still injured or is he just
slated to be riding the pine this year?

Miles� offensive struggles I feel actually havent been getting
much attention and it�s lucky for him that everyone else balling
out has overshadowed his decline. Defensively he�s still fine
but he�s shooting 34 percent this season. Foreman has overtaken
him as the long ball threat in the offense.

Miles is 15 for 43 from three, 9 for 28 from two. He might be
our fourth-best three-point shooter right now, but that's a good
thing, boys. He's a hell of a fourth-best three-point shooter.
Defend the perimeter, knock down some threes, and he's an asset
for us.

agreed that while latimer's production may be down a bit- he's
valuable out there. it's just that his role is less of a 2/SG
this year, with so many others shooting (4man, mo, garcia).
he's already proven he can bring the ball up and even penetrate,
and he certainly stretches a defense.
in other news- the SNY interview revealed that we are ranked not
great in shooting %. something like 225.

I was wondering this earlier. TPP has been very, very good in a
reserve role � steady hand, good pace, solid on both ends. Maybe
he's simply won the job.
Ceesay's going to come back next fall and have a logjam in front
of him. Makes me wonder.
