Re: 2019 G3: STONY BROOK vs. Wagner 6pm SNY

It’s not a commuter school anymore. That’s such an outdated
slight. Problem is there’s no strong event coordination - it’s
gotten better this year but there’s not one unified group that’s
in charge of all campus activities, thus leading to a fractured
system where multiple groups compete with one another for event
time. There’s not enough incentive for students to go to games
because they don’t feel like the massive events that they are at
other schools. Part of that is because of the lack of
tailgating.

This past Spring the SBU Coaches visited every HS in NY NJ CT
and many schools in MD DC PA and VA and invited all of the best
players from those schools to their prospects camp and 1000 HS
players came to the 6 camps on campus (people on this site
should go and see all the great talent that is interested in
SBU). During the Summer all the FBS schools have their camps and
that’s where the 3, 4 and 5 star players go to be recruited not
FCS schools. SBU and the rest of the FCS schools have to stay on
top players and hope they can land them once they don’t get the
FBS offers.
I know last years 2019 class is not about Keith Winfrey only.
Aidan Kaler was the best LB on LI last year and he could have
walked on at a few FBS schools but chose to come here he will be
on the field a lot next year and there are at least a half dozen
other players who will be out there including the PK from NJ who
hurt his leg and redshirted.

weve done the math on this forum before. happy to hear
corrections as these are mere shots in the dark.
lavalle holds 12.3k
assume 500 parents/friends
4k locals, donors
500 alums
500 staff, faculty, admin, athletics, etc
maybe 500 students
other?
and that's 6000. with conservative estimates (meaning, larger
#s than i really think in reality).
that leaves 6300 seats. we all know they count tickets, not
bodies.
options remaining to fill those seats:
-the over 10k students living on/around campus (not even there
by thursday night)
-more locals sitting in traffic on nicholls road when they can
instead watch B1G games on national TV
From this compilation, the number that jumps out at you is "500
students." Yikes. I get that its a commuter school but the
school has over 26,000 students.
Stony Brook feels like a commuter school due to the lack of
school spirit. But in reality its actually a fairly large
residential campus, the largest in the SUNY system. Over 10,000
students live on campus and 83% of first-year students reside on
campus. That is enormous potential if you put a conscious effort
to tap the student body.
Those are the potential future fans that will follow the program
and donate to the school forever if they build an attachment
over the four years. But it seems like athletic department at
SBU is ran as a silo with little coordination with the rest of
the University

i think that even though it's not a "commuter" school in the
sense that so many live on campus- that effectively is
misleading, because for the purposes of football, if youre not
on campus on a weekend, youre essentially a commuter.
also- i dont think the issue is weak event coordination. the
issue is students are distracted & disaffected, leave campus,
and even if on campus, don't want to watch football.

Not sure why there's this big argument over whether or not a kid
is a 3* or not. At the FCS level if you're getting a 3* AT ALL
you're doing something right. Many times those guys have offers
to be depth players/walk-ons at P5 schools. Even the 2* guys are
a big deal at the FCS level. I wouldn't put those guys down and
we get at least a couple each year. Getting talent into the
program for our level hasn't been a problem (with the big
exception of QB). I give Coach P credit for that.
