2011/12: Game 12 Stony Brook vs Vermont

After what I believe was one of the best performances so far
this season, we start conference play against Vermont at home.
We look good, and the last two wins should give a lot of
confidence to our team that greatly needs it. This game is one
to watch, hopefully they can stay undefeated at home this
season. This is our chance to get back to .500 overall...
Hopefully we can continue to see improvement from Brenton,
       Rapier, Coley, Bracey, etc
       Go Seawolves

I am encouraged also by the last two games. Even with the
struggles in the 2nd half against Cornell, the team was able to
close the deal with solid D on the last possession in
regulation and a dominent OT performance. I never felt Rider
could win the game last night even as they started hitting 3's
       in the 2nd half.
I like the aggressive way Tommy Brenton is playing on offense.
Looks like his knees are getting stronger and he is feeling
       confident about them.
Everything works better when he is sharp. It should be clear to
everyone watching the last couple of games what we missed last
       year.
I think the coaches may be close to settling on a rotation. I
think we are starting to see defined roles.
I know it is only two games and the latter part of the Cornell
game was scary, but I think we are ready for conference play.
If we bring that energy to the conference schedule, then the
talk of our not being a factor in the title chase ( something
you can find on other boards ),
       will go away quickly.
       Happy New Year!
       See you Monday.

Happy New Year and yes this is an important game to open
conference play. If we play like we did against Rider we win
       handily.

Definitely an important game to set the tone for the conference
play. I agree with you, I think we can win this game in somewhat
convincing fashion. I like our matchups across the board, and we
have been real tough at home so far (excluding the second half
against Cornell). If we can score in the paint, we'll win.

This is a revenge game for Vermont, and they will be loaded for
bear. That being said, if both teams play their best you win.
Vermont wants a slower paced game that allows them to control
tempo. Decent 3-point shooting, and the usual advantage in
rebounding are musts for you to win. I'd like to see you push
the tempo and try for some easy transition baskets. I also
think you have an advantage with Rapier scoring down low. Depth
may also come into play in the second half. I see SB winning by
       6, something like 63-57...

Great team win. Al, Brian, and Dave were Big Time, but
contributions from everyone. Especially enjoyed seeing the
rumors of Tommy's demise have been greatly exagerrated. A "mere
shell of himself" , according to Sam Perkins.

The team looked great tonight. They had one of their best
offensive nights of the season against arguably the best
defensive team in the conference. Stony Brook is going to be
tough to stop during conference play.

Great win tonight, always feels good to get one on Vermont, and
I think we made a pretty good statement to the rest of the
conference. We seem to be shooting much better, Coley and Rapier
have really stepped up their games. Rapier looks much more
natural playing the four, and Coley has really learned to keep
       the turnovers down.
Tommy was great as usual, though I do think that injury took a
bit off his vertical. At one point of the game, he had what I
thought was going to be a dunk, but for some reason, he suddenly
tried to drop it in and ended up having it swirl out. No doubt
he is our best playmaker and assist guy, though I sometimes wish
he would be a bit more assertive and drive it himself. Can't
complain too much about him though, he does so many things that
       make this team go.
I have to say on Vermont though, they have a couple good reasons
to worry about their season. Apfeld and McGlynn have been great
for them, but there seems to be little after that. What happened
to Brenden Bald? I don't think he made a single field goal all
night, and I know he missed a gimme lay-up.

Bald really misses Fjeld. A lot of his production last year
came because teams needed two guys in the paint (one to cover
Fjeld, one to cover the moustache).
If I'm Vermont, i'm more nervous about how their defense was
picked apart by Rapier and co. The handful of times they
pressed, SBU broke out for easy buckets, and when they were
collapsing inside, they just reset the offense and worked around
       again.
Vermont is still going to be a tough out come tournament time,
and i'm sure the trip to Burlington won't be easy, but I'm very
happy with what I saw last night. A conference win is a
conference win. Now only 15 to go...
