Ford + Weber = I'm feeling a lot better about where we're
heading.

So good news. We're settled on Ford. We've got Weber back. We
need the trifecta now, and have Akwasi decide to finish his
career at SBU.
In other news, Boals has lost 2 quality coaches this week , and
lost his high scorer to a Xavier transfer. Not the start that
he wanted.

My initial reaction didn't like this at all after that USF game,
but with time I think I'll start feeling better about it.

To all the Geno Ford lovers out there. This hire could go really
bad in a hurry for SB and a black eye on the AE conference or
Ford can turn this program into a real good BB team. It's
risky..

@ Hammertime, Without Weber, Big Jeff,Olaniyi, Lattimer would of
never even looked at Stony Brook. It’s the assistants who do the
heavy lifting in evaluating prospects, building the relationship
with the prospects inner circle(Parents,AAU coach,HS
coach,Trainer,Mentor,Handler,Neighborhood,
watchman,Grandparents), getting them to consider using 1 of
their coveted 5 official visits. All a Head coach really does is
Seal the deal most of the time after one of his assistants
applied a full court press. If you are a big time target to the
head coach then he will get involved but even then it’s still
the assistant that’s doing the daily check-in’s on said
prospect. Majority of assistants sleep at the Wheel. They either
get tired of competing against schools they feel inferior to,
get tired of waiting for a commitment, or are just flat out lazy
and their boss won’t realize it until his contract is up.But as
the game goes the same lazy assistant and head coaches get
recycled. The most
common excuse made by assistants is “I GOT CAUGHT UP WITH THE
SEASON.” So they slip up on recruiting and let another school
make up ground.Weber doesn’t have any of these issues. Big Jeff
isn’t the only highly coveted prospect I train and mentor,so I
speak to assistants from all levels often.Blue blood schools on
down. Weber is one of the best in the nation. I have to give him
that man.
When the New Mexico State’s and Utah State’s of the world
offered Jeff. Weber just turned up the heat and called us more.
He also made great relationships prior to becoming a college
coach while working the hoop group camp, guys at Hoop group
still talk about him til this day that’s how big of an imprint
he left there. AAU directors up and down the east coast complain
yearly “Hoop group wasn’t ran like this when Bweb was here.”
The relationships he built there is why he was the lead
recruiter for the Rookie of the year after only being on the Job
6 or 7 months. He was a year ahead of the curve on Lattimer.By
the time A10 schools realized how good Lattimer was, it was too
late. He was on Lattimer as a Sophomore when he played on the B
team of his AAU program. Most coaches won’t even whiff at a B
team guy just simply because he plays on a B team. But Weber was
smart enough to know that Team Takeover” (Who won EYBL in 2018
summer and 2010 Summers) is a program that has so much D1 talent
in it that they can’t just field one team. The following year
Miles was good enough to play on Team Takeover’s main team his
final summer of AAU and Blew up at the Victor Oladipo camp but
by then Weber had made relationship with The parents,The HS
coach, The AAU coach and Director and that was all she wrote.
Cherish this dude and hope that he can become the school’s next
head coach after Geno has 25 win season or 2 and moves on. If
Weber can maintain the same pit bull fight in him and keep the
same work ethic as his career enhances, he can end up a very
special coach and if he stays here a Seawolf he can gauruntee
studs walk through the door for years to come.

Thanks for that outstanding inside view, theGreatK! I knew
Weber had a solid recruiting rep, but now I'm totally sold.
I'm sure keeping Weber was part of Heilbron's larger plan here.

I love it. This team has talent, more talent overall than when
Pikiell was here and that's no knock on him. A new head coach
would have set this program back two years at the very least
because some of these kids would have left and it takes at least
that much time to recover. Instead, SB can build on what it has
already built.
Contract breaches happen very day. Liquidated damages clauses
are used as swords against employees all the time. If Ford
bolts, so be it. Who's to say the next guy wouldn't bolt after
winning the AE. That's what Pikiell did and who could blame
him?
