2011/12: Game 11 Stony Brook vs Rider
DIR By: ecasadoSBU

After a win vs Cornell we need this win badly to end the OOC
season strong before playing against Vermont. I believe the team
can pull a victory tomorrow against a weak Rider team. Also, it
was great seeing the talent this team has, showed in the first
half against Cornell. Consistency is key. I have renewed hope on
this team after the great 1st half performance. This team can
play great when the parts are put together. We almost lost it,
but I still saw improvement last night.
Last Night:
Brenton was great
Bracey got more minutes and was an important part of our game
Offensive rebounds and rebounds in general kept us in the game
Free throws were better, but can be improved
Go Seawolves!

We showed improvement and were very strong in the OT period.
Brenton ending the OT with a dunk was good to see.

The Seawolves almost reached the 80 mark today. Good game. 79
points! WE are ready for conference play. I am excited. I know
Rider is one of the bottom teams in DI but I'm glad we beat them
nonetheless.
79-62 Final
49.1% from the field
69.6% from the line
Good stuff today

Talk about Brenton with 9pts, 12 Rebounds, and 4 assists. Coley
16 and Rapier 12 from the bench... good stuff

Heres my take on the game tonight.
Things I didnt like:
Our perimeter defense wasnt very good. At times we didn't get
our hands up, didn't contest shots, and we certainly didn't
cover the obvious shooter.
The refs were letting the players play, and our guys didn't
adjust accordingly. The refs weren't calling over the back,
definitely weren't calling off-the-ball screen fouls, and
ignored quite a few "aggressive defensive plays" by Rider. We
just sat back and took it, instead of establishing a physical
presence. If you don't take what the refs give you, you play at
a disadvantage.
McAllister looked completely lost against the press. He didn't
have a clue where to go, and when he played the pivot, he had no
idea what to do when they collapsed on him. Not a good game at
all.
Joyner needs to man up and play like he's capable of. He's a
strong dude, he just needs to start playing like a big man.
Don't dribble, don't try and finesse your defender, just
out-muscle him and score the rock.
With all that said, I don't think any of the problems are things
that can't be corrected right away. I really think that if
these are the problems, we're sitting pretty for conference
play.
Now as for things I liked:
Coley, Bracey, and Rapier. All three looked like they wanted to
be there, and if teams continue to press, these three could
really do some damage. Coley and Rapier look much more "mature"
in their games, and if Bracey can become a tweener-type threat,
that makes things interesting.
The team chemistry looked better. The passing wasn't overly
impressive, but they looked to be on the same page. It's a
cliche, I know, but " the team of Stony Brook" looked a lot
better than "the players of Stony Brook".
Coaching. Pikiell and co looked like they were in control the
whole time. They made sure that things didn't get out of hand,
kept a good rotation, and kept things in perspective (ie, used
this game to get ready for Vermont).
Danny Carter was at the game, and he didn't steal a kids cookie,
didn't punch Wolfie, and didn't light the scorers desk on fire.
I'll take what I can get... (ok, i'll admit it, Danny is my
favorite player to watch. He's never a dull moment on the
court).
All in all, I'm happy with what I saw today. I'm feeling a lot
better about our conference chances now (compared to after the
Sacred Heart game). Bring on Vermont!

Seems like the team is starting to play better; I think it has
to do with more defined roles and a stable starting line-up.
Again I will say that the front line of Joyner, Rapier and
Brenton will give any AE team fits, as their ability to get
additional opportunities via offensive rebounds is what you need
(since you are not a great shooting team). Coley seems to be
established as a good compliment to Dougher, and now you are
bringing both Hayes and Bracey off the bench. When you add
McAlister, Carter and Jackson also off the bench, I think you
are clearly the deepest team in the league. However, Albany,
Maine, and BU probably have more offensive firepower, so (as
usual) it will probably come down to defense, rebounding, and
maybe most importantly, how you shoot FT's late in games....I
see a really competitive AE this year, maybe the most balanced
in many years.

Great game last night. If Joyner and Rapier play like that the
rest of the season we are in good shape. We need those big guys
to establish themselves under the basket and become
intimadators. All in all a good win now for Monday night .
