What Lowell proved over the first half of the conference season
is that they're capable of just about anything, and that
includes coming into the Fed tomorrow night and coming away with
a W. Duquette has a real nice mix of experience and youth that
suggests that they'll be in the middle of the pack or better for
a few more years.
Beyond this year, the River Hawks have one more year with
Lutete, who's been an absolute blessing for them after playing
minimally at Radford. And then two more with Noel, and THREE
with heavy rotation guys like Rivera, Darius Henderson, Bryce
Daley, Joey Glynn and, probably the most touted of them all,
Allin Blunt. That's a great foundation to build off of. The
freshmen are really some nice pieces. In Lowell's win over UNH
on Wednesday, they played without Noel and Ryan Jones, so they
ended up starting Lutete, Gantz and three first-year guys. And
then two others off the bench. They didn't exactly fell a giant,
but it's still a nice glimpse of the future.
We did a whale of a job on Lutete in the previous meeting. He
had eight quick ones but then was held to just five the rest of
the way. Lowell isn't just balanced but they're efficient, with
the top three scorers all over 50 percent from the field on the
season. And it's not like their wide bodies in the lane; all
three can shoot it from deep. The three helped them build a
two-point halftime lead in both teams' AE opener, but it failed
them in the second. Altogether, they shot 9 for 35 from deep,
getting virtually nothing inside.
Lowell has to be skeptical about the status of Noel or Jones;
the absence of either would be a tough blow for the visitors.
Jones, who's a calming influence at the point, missed some time
this year with an ankle injury, played through it for a few
games (ineffectively at that), and then missed the UNH game.
Noel left the Vermont game with a leg injury after just one
minute, and was listed as doubtful for the UNH tilt. He was a
DNP. And it's too bad for the River Hawks because he had
definitely turned into a formidable second option on offense,
hitting double figures in all but three games prior to the
Vermont exit, and six games at 20-plus.
In their absence against UNH, spare part Shawn Jones took on a
lead role, pouring in a career-high 17. He entered the game with
22 points on the year.
A victory gets SBU to the 20-win plateau for the first time
under Boals, and keeps us on pace to equal or surpass the
single-season wins record of 26, set in 2015-16. It'll be close.

Not watching this one as I'm out doing other things, but the
halftime score concerns me, but doesn't surprise me. Uml is
good.
