What a difference a couple weeks can make. We made a late run to
beat a pretty good Lowell team at their place, more or less
handle our business against two doormats at home, and we're
looking good. Since then? We needed late comebacks to ousts two
more minions, but then everything catches up to us with two
absolute clunkers, including Wednesday's loss at UMBC.
Never mind the losses. Or the wins! Or the fact that, hey, we're
still 17-5! Anyone who watched the game saw a different Stony
Brook team than the one that got through the non-conference
schedule. We've looked BAD. I won't kill the defense. It still
seems to be doing its job more or less. But offensively, wow, we
seem completely out of sorts.
A lot of people have pointed to Yeboah's knee. There's
definitely something to it, but I think that pales in comparison
to the big picture. We're really lacking flow. Shooters have
hands in their faces, we aren't seeing guys like Yeboah, Garcia,
Olaniyi and Moor crashing the glass and getting us second chance
points. Cornish's production is all over the place, including
big-time duds in the last two games. He just isn't getting to
the rack anymore. It feels like we lack patience and settle for
a below-average look. It's not good.
And we can't shoot! We couldn't have been worse against UMBC,
going 2 for 22. But take a look at our three-point numbers in
conference:
Yeboah: 24% (12 for 50)
Latimer: 26% (11 for 42)
Olaniyi: 28% (5 for 18)
Garcia: 21% (4 for 19)
Cornish: 23% (3 for 13)
That is a long stretch. We've taken contested threes, deep
threes, threes early in the shot clock, etc. And I'm FOR the
three ball, but the motion that has sprung Albany, Vermont, even
UMBC (who just missed open looks) isn't happening on the Stony
Brook side. Sometimes you have go inside first to go out, and
Cornish isn't getting into the paint, and we can't expect
Otchere to distribute from the post either. Instead we have a
bunch of guys standing around the perimeter – not all the time
but too often.
Now in walks the most experienced team in the conference,
boasting five battle-tested seniors who will play a great
majority of the minutes and are desperate to stay in the top
half of the standings as well. We more or less know what to
expect – Dunne from deep, Carroll's a lot like Sherburne, and
Lynch can score at all three levels. I never understood why
Blagojevic didn't play major minutes for them, and he finally is
this year, nearly doubling last year's time on the court.
Weatherington is primarily a shooter.
The trifecta is a big part of their game ... and they can shoot
it. Hartford dropped a school record 19 threes on Binghamton,
led by Dunne's six. They're shooting the three at nearly 42
percent in conference play, and nearly 38 percent for the year.
And by they, I mean the five seniors I mentioned. Hartford is
NOT a deep team. The aforementioned quintet has taken more than
87 percent of the team's shots this year, which ought to make it
interesting next year when they wipe the slate clean.
Still, it just feels like one team's making the move we were
waiting for it to make, and another is coming back down to earth
after its incredible start to the season. The question is: Can
we get our swagger back? Will we show the kind of fight that was
the norm in the first two months? This would be the perfect time
for it. We need it. Otherwise, we sink into the middle of the
America East standings, an unfathomable thought just two weeks
ago.

Yup, agree with all Checkmate. Hartford with some big margin
wins against the lower tier teams in the league; a far cry from
what we've accomplished. Hartford coming in hot; we're coming
in lost. If ever we need a turnaround game, tomorrow night is
it. A loss and we're in 4th place. And to think, a week ago,
we were talking about going up 2 games in 1st place with a win
vs. UVM. Wow, what difference a week can make. In retrospect,
we can't say that we didn't see this coming. Pulling out some
of these real close games has masked the problems that were
building with this team.
Cornish needs to go back to being a PG again. We need him to be
the quarterback and the senior on this team. Drive to the hole,
and look pass first. Need more motion and ball movement, and
like you said, need to send more guys to the glass after a
missed shot. I agree, I think our D is pretty good overall;
it's the offense that's disappeared.
One thing we have going for us against Hartford, is that
Gallagher isn't exactly in the Top 3 when it comes to coaching,
IMO (Becker, Odom, and Boals). I expect a changed game plan
from Coach Boals tomorrow night, and a better all-around game
from us.

This is another tough one even at home. Wouldnt be surprised
the Hawks walk away with a W 80-70 .

Life took me on some different paths this season and tonight
will be my first time (and probably last time this year) seeing
SBU at the arena. Other than catching up with box scores and
some of the chatter here, I don't know much...but I sense it's
been an interesting, up/down slate so far.
Certainly there was a lot of excitement here early on with nice
wins, talk of potential future NBA-caliber players on the
roster, and even dreams of that elusive NCAA at-large bid
Heilbron promised if they got tripped up in the AE tourney. Some
squeaky wins against poor teams and a couple of clunkers changed
all that, it seems.
I suppose I've got it right in that a win keeps them holding on
around the two spot in conference, whereas a loss gets them
trending down toward four/five (with what seems like the nemesis
of UA charging up from the depths...). My memory of these
experienced Hawks players over the last couple of years
(confirmed by recent box scores) is that they can really tear
off some points fast, and also suffer their share of clunker
games.
I'm hoping I get to see "Good SBU" tonight!

Huge game tonight. We really need this one and Hartford won't be
easy. If we can play well tonight and at least get back on
track, our guys will gain some confidence heading into the
second "easy" stretch of our schedule.

Good start, but Lattimore launched (and missed) a 40-footer
again. I'd like to see him much closer to the 3-point line (he
has a tendency to launch some very long ones). He has a
terrific stroke from reasonable range.
