It's the game we've all been waiting for, and even if it isn't a
battle of unbeatens, even if the rumors are true about Anthony
Lamb's status, it doesn't take away from the huge opportunity
that's in front of us here – to go two full games up (edit: in
the loss column) in the America East.
This isn't the kind of team that sinks to the sea floor in the
absence of its star, but this is a tough blow for them if he's
out for a lengthy span. Vermont has always boasted some of the
best depth in the conference, and in defeat and going forward,
that depth will get some big minutes that could be helpful for
the stretch run.
UVM's first go without Lamb was unsightly – a 13-point loss at
home to UMBC in which they were really out of sync. They shot
just 34 percent from the floor – their second worst effort on
the season – and were almost completely ineffective beyond their
perimeter shooting. They made 8 of their first 12 shots, then
just two of the next 22. There was a stretch of over 12 minutes
where they didn't make a field goal. This is obviously an
outlier, but Lamb was such a calming influence for what is a
pretty young team. Inside threat, outside threat, a good passer,
their top defensive presence inside. While he mainly worked on
the block as a freshman, his perimeter game has really blossomed
over the last couple years. Such a pillar for that team.
Without him, it's going to fall on the Duncans. On Wednesday,
the three brothers became the second trio in Division I history
to start a game together. Despite scoring 41 of the team's 61
points, it was a night to forget. They came out and said they
were "embarrassed." As was the case with Albany, again, wounded
dog here. Wouldn't you agree that, without Lamb, just about
nobody expects them to come in here and win on Saturday?
But when you go back to what Becker did last year without Lamb,
it's a reminder that the cupboard's far from bare. Yes, that
team had a two-time conference player of the year at the point,
and veteran size in Henson, Urquhart and Rohrer. Yet you can see
the nucleus of future teams bubbling up here – much like we did
at UA with DeSousa, Rizzuto and Healy. Stef Smith is a tough
guard who came from the same high school as TBH in Canada. I
like the kid Shungu too – a year older than Smith, very similar
body and he'll attack the rack. Moll is another upstate NY kid
and he even LOOKS like Lamb. He hasn't shot it well, but he's
had some nights too. Big man Ryan Davis is a step up on
Christie.
For me, I think Smith is the key on Saturday. I think you can
reasonably expect Ernie Duncan to come in at 15-20 although he's
shown that he can disappear in games too. He has no choice but
to be their pace setter with Lamb and all the seniors gone. But
who's that second guy every night? Everett Duncan had 16 on
Wednesday. Is it him? How are they divvying up Lamb's 15 shot
attempts? For me, Smith can't sit back. He has to seize the
mantle of being that guy behind Ernie. Everybody has to step it
up. On the other side of the floor, UVM's shooting numbers are
down, but Becker has called this one of his best teams
defensively.
I had the line at 3.5, then bumped it to 4. With Lamb, I think
I'd have made UVM a 2.5 point favorite. Even without him, we
haven't exactly shown we can take the bull by the horns in
conference so I think it's yet another close contest. Hopefully
we're up to the challenge.

Even with a presumed Lamb on the DL (concussion protocol), this
is a tough team. Have watched several games. Smith is the real
deal, and the Duncan boys are a legit triple threat. Not sure
about their bench though; nothing like past years, IMO.
Despite 17-3, 5-0, I don't think we're playing particularly well
right now. However, we will have the huge advantage of a
sold-out arena and more than likely, UVM missing their best
player and POY candidate. Assuming :Lamb is out, this is a
must-win for us - to lose a game to a team without their best
player, who we are competing with for the AE title, would be a
double-whammy for us.
Looking forward to the energy in the arena tomorrow night.

I would love to go two full games up in the America East
standing and stay at top. Home court advantage could be the big
difference come AE tourney time for our young team. If we can
make it to the final, I would rather face fully healthy Lamb and
the Kittens at IFCU than at Patrick.
PS look at that NET rankings.. Vermont went from 68 to 94 after
the UMBC loss!

reports. But still, doesn't Coach Boals have to now prepare 2
game plans: one with Lamb in, one without, just in case? Tough
on the coaching staff, I would imagine.

Good point. If I were Becker, I wouldn’t release any update on
Lamb until the tip-off to keep us guessing.

Yes, that's a given. I mean we ardent SBU fans can't even get
info on our own players' status when there are injuries. Looks
like Bill Belichek mentality has woven its way into College
hoops.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Lamb played tomorrow. Again,
we'll have to prep for both. Though I think Boals is prepared
for anything.

It's worth noting that Olaniyi sat out a week and a half with
his concussion, and wasn't himself for a few games after
returning.
