The $64,000 question: Will Akwasi play? I haven't heard
anything. Obviously this game looks a lot different if he does
       or doesn't play.
But then again we have to ask ourselves ... do we care if he
       does?
By all accounts, the real season starts next week when we tip
off against UMass Lowell as we begin working toward a conference
tournament berth, a top four seed, home court advantage
throughout, etc. So yes, our first-ever triumph over a Missouri
Valley Conference team would emphatically punctuate what's been
an already outstanding non-conference schedule. But we don't
need this one. We need Akwasi to be 100 percent for conference
       play.
That said, with a week off and Akwasi's injury seemingly being
minor, I suspect he will have some kind of role this weekend.
       But that's pure suspicion.
I like our chances if he does. I know UNI plays in a bigger
conference, is a bigger name and is at home, but this one's
winnable. Granted, I admit that if I was from California or
Texas or Florida and saw these two matched up on paper, I'd
strongly consider UNI based on their reputation, but we should
be proud of what we've done to this point.
UNI has two things going for it – NET-boosting losses to quality
teams and a big neutral court win over a very Old Dominion
squad. But otherwise they have wins over Bemidji State, Dubuque,
North Dakota and Eastern Kentucky. They have zero true road
wins. They lost to some pretty good teams, yes, but what's it
mean when they got mauled? At Utah State (19), on a neutral
floor against South Dakota (32), at Iowa (23), to Grand Canyon
at home (11), at rotten UT Arlington (9). Statistically, yes,
they've lined up opposite quality teams, but Panther fans can't
point to any of those results and be pleased.
This is for a team that was picked to finish fifth in the MVC,
so expectations are higher than what they've produced thus far.
UNI has relied on an influx of talent to achieve the success
they have. AJ Green, a top 100 recruit from down the street,
passed on schools like Virginia, Minnesota and Iowa State to
play for his dad, an assistant at UNI, who the Panthers' new
star naturally grew up watching. He's still adjusting to the
college game – notice the negative assist/turnover ratio and
inconsistent production – but is nevertheless a talented scorer.
From what I can tell, he isn't somebody who's going to kill you
at the rim but prefers to do his damage from the perimeter. Not
terribly athletic, not terribly long, but a kid who will try to
create separation for his jumper off the dribble. I think we
have the personnel we have to defend/frustrate him. In addition
to Green, UNI has counted on Pepperdine transfer Trae Berhow,
who's started all 12 games and leads the team in rebounding.
Otherwise, Wyatt Lohaus, the considerably more diminutive son of
12-year NBA big man Brad Lohaus, has gone from a career reserve
to a solid starter in the backcourt alongside Green – Lohaus
made the curiously named All-MVC Bench Team last year after
making more than 45 percent of his threes; he's down 10 percent
this year. UNI has some decent parts otherwise although no one
other than Green has gone for 20-plus in a game this season
(we've had four FYI). If you take a step back, we're looking at
a team that's in the bottom tenth in the country for points per
game, is an ordinary group of shooters, doesn't really get to
the line (against D-I competition anyway), doesn't challenge at
the rim and doesn't force turnovers. Granted, some of that's
style of play and Ben Jacobson's done enough in 14 years to
suggest that he can turn it around (and maybe I'm
oversimplifying things), but this doesn't feel like a team that
will challenge Loyola for the conference title.
I put us as a 1.5 point favorite – maybe that's bias factoring
in, and not enough consideration for the venue. Note what I said
above – nationally, UNI is a B celebrity and we're much farther
down in the rolling credits. But really, if you ignored the
conference we come from and looked plainly at resume, including
our road wins, I have to think we're the better team right now.

Great analysis as usual Checkmate. If Yeboah can play, I
definitely think we take this one. Assuming he doesn't though (I
don't want him to tbh) I think we can still win, but Garcia and
Lattimer will need big games, and Jeff has to stay out of foul
trouble (a tall order as that has yet to happen this season).
When I first saw UNI on the schedule, I got excited, but they're
really having a down year so far. 50/50 coin toss on this one
from me, though SBU should win despite Yeboah being out. This
game will be happening while the playoff is on, so I may not
actually watch a whole lot of it, but I'll have my eye on the
       scoreboard. Go Seawolves!

Oh geez, I hadn't thought about that! Alabama/Oklahoma or ...
       stream SBU/UNI?!?!?
Watch Green's senior season mixtape. Good player but should we
be worried about him dropping a bunch on us? Seems like a
       one-trick pony to me.

The books have UNI as anywhere from a 1 to 2 point favorite.
Boals confirmed on the pregame interview that Akwasi WILL NOT
       play tonight. Knee hyperextension.

Minor hyper extension usually 2-4 weeks. Any indication on his
       prognosis?

He just said that they're taking it day by day. If he appears in
our AE opener at Lowell, that's two weeks since he injured it at
Quinnipiac. Lowell may not be a pushover this year – they're
perfect at home so far – so it would be great to have him back.

I say sit him for that game also. We play four AE cellar
dwellers after UML. Yeboah shouldn't rush back. I wouldn't even
think of playing him before the Albany game tell you the truth.

With Yeboah out and Otchere with two quick fouls, SB in big
       trouble..
