The battle for Long Island! How fun is it to have this kind of
buzz around each program right now? Eighteen wins between them
and two players who ought to challenge for their conference's
player of the year honors.
In Wright-Foreman and Pemberton, we have two of the toughest
assignments our backcourt will see all season. Wright-Foreman,
last year's CAA POY, is undoubtedly at the top of that list.
He's nearly an impossible cover, dicing defenses no matter how
much attention is thrown at him. Play off him and he drills the
three; get in his face and he's by you. He'll kill you from
midrange too. Add it all up and that's why he's ranked fourth in
the country in scoring at more than 25 points per game. He'll
easily eclipse 2,000 points for his career and finish second or
third in scoring at Hofstra all time.
JWF burned us for 33 a season ago and is at the very least on
NBA teams' draft boards someplace. For me, he's a tremendous
college player who gets a summer league invite and eventually
plays for a long time overseas or in the G League. In this era
of switching on screens, I just doubt he can defend at the
highest level, and he's not an elite playmaker either. Maybe a
second rounder? That'd be fantastic for him and the Hofstra
program, which has seen Charles Jenkins and (now assistant
coach) Speedy Claxton get nabbed in the past.
He can score like either of those guys. So how do we guard him?
Hey, don't look at me. But maybe we can run multiple guys at him
– although he won't tire (he's fifth in the country in minutes
per game). Can Elijah chase him around? Moor? Long for a spell?
I like that we have a legit shot blocker in the paint who may be
able to force short jumpers rather than layups.
Side note: On NBAdraft.net's most recent mock draft, they don't
have the first senior coming off the board until #33 – the first
pick of the second round. If that happens, it would mark the
first time in history that no college seniors went in the first
round. Last year we waited until Utah took Grayson Allen with
the 21st pick, and in 2017, it took until the 29th selection for
a senior to go.
Pemberton's a pro as a 3 and D guy someplace too.
They're happy to go with a small lineup – their starters include
four guys 6-5 and under and then Taylor, who was a virtual
non-contributor at Purdue before doing his grad year at Hofstra.
Mihalich has used the transfer market to his advantage. Taylor
(Purdue), Coburn (Bona) and bench big Dan Dwyer (Penn) all
started elsewhere, and three-star recruit Issac Kante (Georgia)
will be with the team next year.
We HAVE to keep these guys off the line. They've worn out a path
to the line all year and made teams pay, shooting it at an 81
percent clip as a team, which puts them second in the country
behind Incarnate Word. And to make matters worse for us, Hofstra
keeps it clean. You hear about teams that make more free throws
than the other teams take, and Hofstra's that. They've made 192
while their opponents have only taken 165. Hofstra has shot at
least 18 free throws in all 11 games this year. Their opponents?
Just twice.
This one could really go either way. The additions of Latimer,
Otchere, Moor and Garcia really put us a few steps ahead of the
team that nearly upended Hofstra last year. They have the best
player on the floor though. I thought that Delaware might get
the best of us but we toughed it out, showing great resiliency
when the UD shooters heated up. With the crowd in our favor and
the tenacity that we've shown, I think we find a way.

to win, it looks like we'll have to keep them off the stripe and
also press out a bit and take away the 3. make them work inside
against our size and athleticism.
i saw this team play last year and they are good- and fast- and
have a lot of veterans.
i wanna see moor get some minutes to extend our depth and cover
their shooters tight.
and how about corry long coming in late for that three against
delaware? maybe use him some more in this game to stem the
runs.
maybe drive against foreman every possession and get him in foul
trouble, limiting his minutes??? i guess it depends on which
refs show up- delaware, no good; every other game, he could foul
out.

FWIW just went on the athletics website. Looks like there is
maybe 300 tickets left. Should be a near sell out. Only thing
lacking will be the student section/marching band as today is
the last day of finals. 3750 would be a great crowd.

Looking like Hofstra is a three-point favorite tonight.

to do it.

Buffalo also beat Syracuse by 10. It looked like they weren't
going to win for much of the first half, but they rallied late
and held onto the win. Buffalo is legit this year.
If they wound up getting a high seed, that would be a fun first
round match-up in the tournament for us. ;D

Tonight may very well be our toughest OOC game this year to
date. Should be a barn burner, and sounds like a great crowd
expected. Good luck boys!

ESPN+ subscription question...I have it, but generally have only
watched games live. I expect to get home after the game tips and
would prefer to watch the entire game...I know when its complete
you can watch a replay, but does anyone know if I log on at 8
while the game is going on if I can start at the beginning or I
have to watch live? I feel i tried this once before and got
looped into the live game, instead of the start
