KenPom likes us to win this one by 10! I dunno. It's hard to
imagine a game that isn't down to the wire the way this season
is going.
The Blackbirds are coming off a season in which is stunningly
won the NEC conference tournament, and this edition of the
Blackbirds is supposed to be pretty good too. They were picked
to finish third in the NEC, even garnering a first-place vote –
although St. Francis (PA) had eight of the nine remaining votes.
While SFU has taken on all comers (Buffalo, UCLA, UNC, Va Tech),
LIU has opted for a decidedly less impressive schedule, with
only two games in the top 200 and just one in the top 150
according to KenPom. We'll be the second best teams in terms of
ranking that they've faced this season.
Everything revolves about Raiquan Clark, who had 20 against us
in last year's win. He came to LIU as a walk-on and has
gradually grown into an all-conference kind of talent. He was a
third-teamer a year ago, and was projected as a first-team
selection this season. He's an athletic yet rugged swingman
who's going to put his head down, put the ball on the floor and
try to get something done in the paint. He shoots over 63
percent from two, just 23 percent from three. I don't see him as
a back-to-the-basket guy. He also isn't afraid of contact, as
you'll see with the six-plus free throw attempts per game. Add
it all up and he's capable of a big night – see the 33 against
Fairfield, 31 against NJIT and 27 against Albany in their game
in Belfast. He reminds a little of the kid Young from Quinnipiac
without the jumper – BTW, Young's ripped off three straight
20-plus point nights, the first of which was against us.
Flowers was wooed to Brooklyn from UMass when Kellogg was shown
the door. He was part of a recruiting class that was supposed to
save Kellogg's job up there, an inexplicably good haul for a
program that's fallen on hard times. Fast-forward a few years
and only one of the five remains on the Minuteman roster. The
whole thing was fishy. Anyway, here he is with another
opportunity with LIU.
I expect we'll see straight up man-to-man for the whole 40
minutes, with Agosto and Batts pressuring the ball out front.
Batts is a brat, ranking in the top 20 in steals per game, while
Agosto is a true point guard who will penetrate the D and try to
wreak havoc from there.
Between Flowers and senior Raul Frias, LIU has a few shooters
who can hurt us. Just ask St. Peter's, who watched Frias hit 7
of 9 threes, including four in a second half in which the
Blackbirds outscored the Peacocks (both fierce birds) by a 40-24
margin. LIU LOVES the three in general. They average more than
30 three attempts per game, and they've taken 94 more threes
than their opponents through nine games. Even with a physical
advantage, they didn't pound it down low against the College of
New Rochelle! 37 threes, 40 twos. So needless to say, let's run
them off the line and make them uncomfortable.
I'd like to see continued growth from Ochefu in this game. He's
been great of late. It's been mentioned by a few that he should
get consideration for the starting lineup. I don't hate the
idea, but either way, I think he's somebody who can do some real
damage in 20-25 minutes of action.

Looks like Raiquan draws about 6 fouls a game (top 100 in the
country). He looks like a similar player to Choh from the Brown
game (Draws 7 fouls a game) who completely took our bigs out of
the game drawing fouls. Both guys struggle from the foul line
though. I'd prefer to not have Akwasi guarding him. Teams not
the same with Kwas on the bench in foul trouble.

Hope we get a good crowd tonight, to set off this 3-game home
stand. Since CWPost / LIU is merging into one soon, this could
turn into another local rivalry, akin to the Hofstra rivalry.

I'm hoping that Olaniyi is back in A-1 condition for this game.
The past two games have shown that in spite of the Seawolves'
deep team, when Elijah is not on top of his game they are headed
for trouble.
