We’ve earned it, boys. After three weeks on the road, with just
a pitstop at IFCU for the Molloy game, we finally have a few
home games here to look forward to.
Raise your hand if you thought we’d be 6-1 at this point.
#crickets
As I said in a previous post, I think any of us would have
signed up for one victory against the three mid/high major teams
we’ve faced. So to take all three, with this young squad, is
very very impressive.
I feel pretty good about upping it to 7-1 Saturday night.
Quinnipiac’s had a dismal five-year stretch, posting 20-plus
losses in each of the past three seasons. With a more
experienced group, perhaps they end that skid, but it’s been an
odd year already for them.
We will be the fourth America East team on Quinnipiac’s
schedule. Hartford went to Hamden and won handily, while QU’s
two victories this season came against likely AE cellar dwellers
New Hampshire and Maine. They’re coming off a 69-62 loss at
UMass, which isn’t bad on paper but the margin also wasn’t
indicative of a game that was largely lopsided. UMass led by as
many as 21 points in the second half – 55-34 with 11 minutes
left – only to see a flurry of turnovers and converted free
throws slash the lead to single digits. Quinnipiac fired away
over and over from deep, with 37 of their 60 shot attempts
coming from three-point land.
And that’s no anomaly. Only once in five games have they not
shot as many or more threes than twos – 29 threes, 29 twos
against Hartford; 30 threes, 27 twos against UNH; 31 threes, 18
twos against Maine; and 37 threes, 23 twos against UMass. The
thing is … Quinnipiac isn’t blessed with all these marksmen.
They’re shooting at just a 31 percent clip, and were only a
couple percentage points better last year. Overall, they’re
ranked fourth from the bottom nationwide in shooting percentage
overall, converting on just over 35 percent on all attempts this
season. Mind you they haven’t faced the gauntlet we have either.
The Bobcat offense revolves around Cameron Young, who’s coming
off a season in which he earned a second team all-conference
nod. He hasn’t looked the part so far, shooting just 32 percent
from the floor, including 0 for 8 against UMass, but he’s
capable of a lot better. He poured in a season-high 31 against
Iona and Fairfield last year, 27 against Hartford, and all
together had 14 games over 20. Rigoni shot better than 45
percent from three a year ago, and Robinson too is a threat off
the bench.
It's of little consequence this weekend, but Quinnipiac has
arguably the top 2018 graduate from Long Island on their roster
– Savion Lewis from Hills East, who averaged 34 and 7 as a
senior en route to being named New York's Mr. Basketball.
However, QU's already come out and said that he's redshirting.
Going back to the LI connection, you could argue Donatas Kupsas
(Weber State) and Frankie Policelli (Dayton) over Lewis but it's
tough to count LuHi. On another note, a Bobcat guard who's seen
some time, Tyree Pickron, was on our recruiting radar for a bit
too.
It’s hard to believe that we’ve never faced Quinnipiac in all of
40-plus years, yet we’re going to get them twice in a three-week
span. A sweep would be grand.

Quinnipiac?? You mean the people who compile all the polling
data :D :D
I know it's basketball and anything can happen, but we've got to
get this one. We'll be at home, all signs point to us being
better than these guys, this ought to be a win, and fairly
easily at that. If it's close I"m going to be disappointed no
lie.

i didnt think we'd be 6-1. with the new faces and loss of
seniors, i thought more like 3-3.
my xmas list- otchere in less foul trouble; healthy olaniyi;
less reliance on yeboah to do it all; and more offense from
otchere.
i couldnt be happier about FTs.

Meanwhile...
The AE with a 17-40 OOC record and Conference RPI: 30 out of 32.
This conference sucks. The ceiling is so low here

It's us, Vermont, maybe UMBC, and then a whole trash heap behind
us this year

while i do understand that it looks that way now- all we need to
do is lose to ualbany or hartford (4-6 possible games?), pull up
this post, and then cringe.

I would expect a win Saturday but we have to be careful. Stop
the early turnovers and fouls and we can play with anyone. Free
throws this year are great , I think this is best free throw
shooting team we ever put on the court.

Anyone know how it looks for Olaniyi to play? It would
certainly be unfortunate if he still hasn't cleared protocol.
But, far more importantly, I'm concerned that it would signify
something much more critical for the kid himself. It's been an
unusually long time (calendar time) out of the lineup, don't you
think?

I'd rather Olaniyi heal fully and return whenever he's 100% than
rush him back during non-conference play. We're a better team
with him obviously, but we can win without him.
