its a little early to point to cpu rankings though and assess
any team. i look at NSU and i think they're solid. if they're
not, then why'd we have so much trouble with them.

I'd wait a couple weeks before putting much stock into any
rating system. I also still think last years statistics are
still being weighed into kenpom's rankings, hence why we're
below Vermont despite having the more impressive non-conference
slate thus far. We're coming off a season where we were ranked
223rd; Vermont is coming off 73rd.

Game 7: at Norfolk State 11/27

Throw out the records. This is a real nice win for the guys.
Olaniyi out, Yeboah out with five fouls, on the road, against a
team who's hungry to even the score, and we find a way to pull
the thing out. Norfolk State isn't anything close to a behemoth,
but for us to weather the storm like that I think says a lot
about this team's mental makeup.
I've been critical of Cornish in the past, but he was flat-out
brilliant tonight in the second half. He CARRIED us down the
stretch when we had two freshmen, another newcomer and Garcia on
the court trying to close out a game. Defenders just can't stay
in front of him, and it seems that he's finding the touch on the
perimeter also. 38 BIG minutes from him.
And 28 from Otchere – second highest on the team. He'd maxed out
at 20 minutes prior to tonight, so to play 3/4 of the game and
have only one foul until late is a great sign. You can sense
he's getting it now. As Boals said in the postgame, he only had
two blocks, but he affected plenty more shots than that. He
showed glimpses of growth offensively, even when he didn't
score. I recall a nice drop step that just rolled off the rim,
but that's the kind of strides we're looking for. And even 6 for
9 from the line – I'll take that from the big guy!
35-19 on the glass. I loved seeing the guys keep the ball alive
when they couldn't get to the ball – Otchere late, Latimer late,
it was terrific. And the turnovers that plagued us early went
away – 14 in the first half, just five in the second.
Sure, you'd have loved for us to keep the lead at 18 or 20
points and coast to victory, but it's also noteworthy that we
saw our lead deteriorate (thanks to hot NSU shooting) and we
responded even without our two captains. I'll take that.
As I said before, the Olaniyi injury seems to have sprung Long
from the bench. He played some good minutes, even late in the
second half, and showed a little something.
Edit: One thing that just occurred to me. There have been
stretches under all coaches up to and including Boals where it
felt like we had to claw for every bucket. Even with Warney out
there it happened. Pikiell could recruit and defend but his
offense made you feel like you were clenching your teeth and the
wheel in rush hour traffic. Nothing easy. It feels different
this year. We have some good young athletes. There’s more action
toward the rim, better ball movement, more open looks, more
layups. Sure, it’s easy to say that after a win against Norfolk
State, but in any of the games we won, it has felt easier to get
hoops. The games have been more enjoyable to watch. I credit the
entire coaching staff for their gameplan, instilling a certain
level of effort, and recruiting some real talent here. And a nod
to Pikiell too. He obviously built this thing up brick by brick
and his last two holdovers, Yeboah and Garcia, are key pieces.

Thanks for all the commentary; the comments on the broadcast had
me rolling. I was at a wake with my wife, glued to Gamecast-was
that wrong?
Sounds like Cornish and Jeff had nice games, with the usual from
Garcia. Winning without our best 2 guys on the court really
speaks volumes about this team, and it’s depth
Super pumped to be 6-1 at this juncture!

Really? Vermont has played Kansas and Louisville, which Stony
Brook hasn’t played anyone near that caliber.

and lost. They have wins over BU, Lyndon State, and Yale. Stony
Brook has wins over South Carolina, URI, GW and hasn't played a
D1 game at home yet this year. I think they pretty clearly have
the more impressive resume so far

right on- this year the offense is a bit more fluid/effortless.
we are hitting FTs, taking less 3s, missing less 3s, and getting
more boards.
