So the way things unfolded in Uncasville last night, we now have
a home-and-home with Norfolk State � so this is now the first of
two home-and-homes on the year (Quinnipiac being the other). Not
a fan but it is what it is.
Some of the above numbers are skewed by early-season
competition. NSU's two wins have come against such powers as
Mid-Atlantic Christian (108-50) and Clarion (74-46). So they're
still looking for win #1 at this level.
Sound familiar? It should. Norfolk State was 1-12 entering IFCU
in December, with their only win coming against ... Mid-Atlantic
Christian. We were coming off our win at Rutgers, saw NSU's
record and thought we'd be able to ring in the new year on a
high. That included with nine minutes left in the game when we
led 55-45. But instead, NSU ripped off 11 straight points to
pull ahead and continued pouring it on en route to victory. We
all came here afterward and wondered how that team was winless
against D-Is. Well, that set them up for the rest of the year.
They won 13 of their last 20, going 11-5 in the MEAC, before
losing in the conference tournament semis.
Quick break: Mid-Atlantic not afraid to take it on the chin in
November! They've lost to Division I Norfolk State, Hampton and
the Citadel by an average of 61 points!
One of the biggest differences I see in this game is NSU's
experience. Will that come into play? They are going to field an
entire starting lineup of guys in their early 20s. Jordan
Butler's legitimately 24 years old. Whitley's going on 23.
Thomas and Long are 22 1/2. So many of these guys did a postgrad
year. They've got a lot of time together on the court, and never
mind their current record, they've won a lot too. We have one
common opponent in South Carolina, with us winning and NSU
falling by 17, but I just have this suspicion that that cohesion
and "man strength" is going to matter tonight.
Whitley's gotten off to a slow start this year, but he's part of
the nucleus. He was named team MVP a year ago, and it was him
who got the ball late against Siena last night, missing a layup
last night that would have put the Spartans ahead, probably for
good. He'll be a handful for our guards. I'm interested in the
kid CJ Kelly too. He's a Queens kid who was named PSAL Player of
the Year and, after taking his redshirt last year, has seen some
good minutes early on.
In last year's game, we really relied on the three-ball. 33 of
our 57 attempts came from deep, and we went 3 for 17 from deep
in the second half. We have been at our best when we've been on
the attack, and I think we have the personnel to do it for the
first time in a while. That said, we really can't have Cornish
disappear like he did yesterday. Zero points on two shots in 24
minutes against Holy Cross is just a head scratcher, and it's
not the first time he's been taken out of (figuratively) a game.
The bench had just 14 points against HC, with nine coming from
McKenzie. I'd like to think that our depth is better than that.
Bottom line: We'll need to re-energize ourselves tonight. The
luster has worn off of our two season-opening wins, and we
shouldn't have delusions of grandeur. We may be capable of
winning any game, but without our best effort, we can lose them
all too.

I am watching this Basketball game. Regardless if they win or
lose this game, this team is as raw as a Philly Cheesesteak
sandwich. No rhythm and sloppy turnovers. They have a ton of
work ahead of them to prepare for conference play..

Pretty even first half; decent finish. Although Moor doesn�t
offer much as a scoring threat, gotta love how active he is
overall. I think he was responsible for that end of half surge.

There have to be more people in the stands at practice than
there are at Mohegan Sun Arena tonight. Over/under is 100.
Whatchu got?
The boys were down 31-24 but had themselves a six-point lead
before that heave from Thomas at the end. The switch to the
1-2-2 press really seemed to energize the team. Great job also
by Garcia underneath and Moor making his presence known
defensively.

Definitely under 100. Boals doing a much better job tonight
with lineup Mgmt, imo. Sad to hear that Otchere only averaged 15
minutes per game in JC, due to propensity to foul.
