So you, me and everyone is still glowing after our win in the
opener. What a win. I mean, really, that was just a wild, wild
ride. I couldn't be happier.
Unfortunately, we're about to go up against a completely
different beast here. South Carolina's big, they're quick,
they're deep (edit: they aren't due to injury), they're
experienced and under Frank Martin, you can bet they're tough as
hell. GW played tight at the end and bricked free throw after
free throw, but the gutsy effort that overwhelmed a young GW
team certainly won't claim the coach and players who helped make
a Final Four run two years ago.
First and foremost, what worries me is just how aggressive USC
will be on the glass. They went 0 FOR 18 from three against
Upstate in their season opener, but made up for it underneath,
outrebounding Upstate 50-34. That included 19 offensive boards,
led by a combined 11 from Silva and Kotsar. I expect them to
have similar success against us.
Saw this tweet: "According to Sports Reference's college
basketball game finder, which dates back to 2010-2011: Coming
into today, just 11 teams had gone 0-for-18 or worse on
3-pointers, and only one had won while doing so. South Carolina
did that vs. USC Upstate." But hey, ever come from 22-0 down???
Their no-show from three is not a mirage. This is NOT an elite
shooting team. They shot under 40 percent as a team last year,
and their two best three-point shooters from that team are gone.
If the opener was any indication, it's still a weakness.

But let's face it: Silva and Kotsar STARTED in the Final Four
game. Gravett played significant minutes off the bench. These
are no johnny-come-latelys. And the noobs are no pushovers
either. Bryant was described as "Jordanesque" out of high school
in terms of athleticism and dunking ability. He committed to USC
only in June and rewarded them by coming off the bench to score
a team-high 21 on Tuesday. (we have anybody who can do what he
did from, I dunno, 2:40-3:30 below?). Lawson committed even
later, turning down schools like Oregon, Maryland and Baylor.
He'll play the point when another newcomer, former Georgetown
guard Tre Campbell, isn't.
The point's a weak spot though. We'll need our aggressiveness
and active hands to turn into buckets on the other end, and I
expect at least some zone too. That's what helped mid-major
Illinois State beat USC last year. The Gamecocks decided to
shoot over the zone, firing off an uncharacteristic 32 threes
out of 61 attempts, making only nine. They don't have the
shooters to bury us from deep this year either.
For those who followed the recruiting trail, note that Alanzo
Frink won't play due to a lingering knee injury. Neither will
Jair Bolden, who sure could've helped GW on Tuesday but instead
will sit the year out as a transfer.
This is going to be a tough one. What I do like is our guys'
fearlessness. Yeah, we're undersized by comparison, but we saw
Olaniyi, Cornish, Garcia, Latimer, etc, take it into the teeth
of the GW defense. I don't think this moment will be too big for
them. Perimeter shots began to fall late and were key to our
comeback. We'll need at least 10 makes to have a chance in my
opinion. Also, with their ability to board, I don't know that we
can afford to go with Garcia at the 5. We need more than four
boards from Otchere and for him to block and change shots.
Unofficial line might be a little low but I'll stick with it. In
other news, GW's a 6 1/2 to 7 point favorite on Siena Thursday
night. Who you got?
Bryant highlights. Maybe a little Stacey Augmon?? Whole thing's
impressive but a few big dunks starting at 2:40.

After such a legendary come from behind win Tuesday night, I
couldn't exactly blame the players for still being a little high
from that game and wanting to keep that good feeling going. It's
the job of coach Boals to get the team focused and ready to play
a good South Carolina team, the only P5 opponent we get this
year. I don't anticipate falling behind 0-22 this time haha. If
we can compete against them and keep it close, it'll bode well
for there rest of our season coming up. I like our team already.

yep. keep in mind all the rookies on this squad.
i expect some trouble in the paint because as big as we are,
we'll get outsized at times. agreed on garcia not playing 5.
again i think if we leverage our depth- and run a bit, and press
a lot, we have a chance. but it's not likely- SoCar is the
better team, and is on notice. (if tuesday didnt do it, BC did
last march)
PS- checkmate, you're a superstar.
PSS- can we get VA to drive down and disrupt their foul
shooting??? 8) i'm throwing in for gas money, tolls, lunch,
and will buy the ticket

Hmmmmm. I saw them play eight guys for 20+ minutes apiece and
thought that Martin was going with a short rotation. Was it
really out of necessity? Whatever it is, it's a pretty good
eight.

Hey guys, regarding watching the game tomorrow, I have ESPN3 via
Optimum Online, and I ponied up for ESPN+ as well.
I'm pretty confused.
I see that the game for tomorrow is appearing on SECN+
(Southeast Conference) in the ESPN schedule, but doesn't show up
in the ESPN+ schedule (thanks ESPN, for making this so easy to
browse and navigate.............).
So will this SECN+ game be accessible to watch via regular ESPN
or ESPN3, or does this require paying for SECN+?
Optimum Online customers only need to reply.

UPDATE: I think I figured it out. When logged in as an Optimum
Online customer, the WatchESPN app allows you to access the
SECN+ network, so I think I'm good. Regular ESPN + Optonline
customer should do the trick.

Hopefully this helps - I am an Optimum customer with ESPN+ and
last night on the SECN, I was able to watch SEC volleyball. So,
we should be good in watching the game tomorrow night.
