I said in the ChampionshipSubdivision board previously that
there is a major difference between SBU and the other SUNYs.
This is one of them. We've been able to capture major donations,
more than any other SUNY. Our location in wealthy downstate and
in a higher populated New York metro area means we also got more
representatives defending our interest up in Albany making it
easier to work together with the legislators. Stony Brook will
continue its path to success especially with this major
donations that come in from time to time.
Our Health related programs on East Campus will be impacted
heavily by these donations, in a very positive way. It seems
like Stony Brook doesn't want to loose its grip on Research
after the heavy competition by SUNY Albany & SUNY Buffalo.

Incredible news. I'm really looking forward to see Stony Brook
shoot up the rankings in some of specific disciplines (I think
our physics department is going to quickly become one of the
premier departments in the country thanks to the Simons Center
for Geometry and Physics) and as a university as a whole. I
don't think Stanley is exaggerating by calling it a "rebirth".
He is in a position to hire new faculty and make Stony Brook
better for the first time since he has been president.

Since this is a board about SB sports, I'll make this comment
re. the Simons donation— Hopefully the coaches can use the
donation as a selling point for some recruitees who are on the
fence between SBU and some other major program. I'm thinking
especially about the early signing period for football in
February. I mean, what high school kid wouldn't be impressed by
a school that gets a gift like that?
P.S. I think SBU is "big" enough. As an example, the the
University of Virginia has 21,000 students. SBU has about
25,000. We need to invest in improving the assets we already
have.

Forgot to add- they also threw in $25M in 2006, and also created
a 130 acre park in memory of their son. I couldnt tell you the
grand total of all of their generosity, but from just this
thread its nearing a quarter of a billion dollars.

Yeah, to be able bring up the donation while talking about what
the school has to offer, especially for recruiting in Florida,
Texas, and Cali where the kids very likely have never heard of
Stony Brook, could be impressive. Long term I think it will
indirectly have a big impact on athletics. I really think this
donation along with the tuition increases will set Stony Brook
up to be a top 50 type institution, and athletics will naturally
follow once the academic reputation becomes that strong.
Regarding size, I don't know for sure but I think a lot of the
enrollment increases are probably graduate students. If you're
going to build new labs, you'll need to bring in graduate
students to work in them.

I think Stony Brook should reach the 30,000 mark in enrollment,
cap undegraduate at 20,000 and Graduate at 10k. the 2:1 ratio
should continue to be the guideline.
With 20,000 undergraduates, everyone benefits. The bigger you
are, the more significant...

...to a point, ecasado. The three biggest public campuses are
Arizona State, Central Florida, and Ohio State. None of those
conjure up images of fine scholarly institutions to me. I first
enrolled at SB when it had only 14K students, so perhaps I'm a
bit biased against mega-campuses. 30,000 isn't crazy, but SB
could reach new academic and athletic heights around its current
enrollment numbers.

Well, You got Ohio State, University of Florida, PennState,
UCLA, University of Michigan, Illinois-Urbana and the list goes
on as mega AAU Universities which have great academic/research
reputation. We share the research intensive similarities with
these universities. We shouldn't be afraid to grow. I wouldn't
like the enrollment to be 40k+ but I think somewhere around the
30k should be the goal
However, as you pointed out, we can succeed in athletics with
the current amount of students.

Dr Stanley has mentioned several times he sees SBU as the
Stanford of the East. Interesting comment. Stanford is a
premier school academically and athletically.

Well.... Thats just our president hyping things up. We are still
veeeery far from being the Stanford of the East... We are
working to get there.
