certainly not even close to that. If my math is about right, SBU
seniors were 2 for 23. Brutal. Well, they each offered a few
bright moments along the way during their careers, but as
Checkmate said I guess they were all just role players and not
capable of leading this team this year. I hope wherever the road
goes from here for them, it's a good one.

5 seniors: 2-23 FG, 1-2 FT for 5 points
5 returning players: 17-34 FG, 9-12 FT for 46 points
:o :o :o
No Almonacy, no Long, no Garcia. I'd bet good money that we've
seen the last of at least one of them.

Thanks again Checkmate for your great insight posting before
each game. Looking forward to seeing your post next season..
It's sad that our seniors went out of this season a total dud.
Clearly, it has everything to do with the departure of Pikiell .
I think the chemistry between Boals and Sturdivant, Garcia,
Sekunda, Almonancy was just not there. Typical whenever you
have a coaching change..But yet Yeboah had no issues adjusting
to coach B style of playing.. I think either Garcia or Almonancy
transfer, or both.. On the flip side. There is good reasons to
be optimistic about next season. Yeboah and Olaniyi are going to
be quite impressive next and with the incoming freshman class
coming in, SB should be just fine..

I think you're overthinking it. They just aren't/weren't that
good. They were decent assets behind Warney, Puriefoy, McGrew,
Woodhouse, etc., but they were too limited to be our alpha dog.
Jake got better over the course of his four years, but I don't
know that Ty or Sekunda showed any noticeable improvement since
they set foot on campus. They may have even regressed. Is that a
fair assessment?

I think none of them were pieces you can build your team around,
but almost no one is. I thought sekunda was actually having a
great senior year before the broken finger. Obviously his game
is centered around the 3-ball and since coming back from the
broken finger he is only 3-15 from deep. I think at least some
of Sturdivant's struggles has to fall on Boals. Last year
Sturdivant was 50th best player in the country at drawing fouls
with 6.5 fouls drawn per 40 minutes. For some reason, this
season he attempts 100 3s after attempting only 1 in his first
three seasons and only makes 28%. Last year Sturdivant was an
elite level player at drawing contact down low. Boals should
have made sure that he continued to work down low and draw
contact rather than jack threes from the perimeter.
Still bullish on Boals but I think he has some responsibility
there.

actually i was going to add last night that i saw, in the first
half, three attempts from sturdy to penetrate and either layup
or baby hook. all three missed but the point is- that's the
better shot selection.
late in the game in transition he ran upcourt and stopped at the
arc and asked for the ball. it's a habit. but i say crash the
boards and fight for a rebound. use the 6'8'' body.
there were some rebounds last night that i saw our bigs not even
leave the ground for. i just dont get it.

Our seniors were flat last night . The announcers even
mentioned it that SBU had no senior leadership on the floor. I
think our future is still bright if we get one more big body .
This kid Lattimore everyone seems high on him and Yeboah and
Olaniyi and now a proven quantity.

Boals has to take a lot of responsibility when it comes to
Sturdivant. With the big guns gone, he started off last season
showing marked improvement, particularly with his inside game,
but fell apart the 2nd half of the season. His continued his
demise this season, outside of a couple of strong rebounding
games, and mysteriously turned into a 3-point shooter
(seriously, 100 attempts?). That was a failed experiment and
coaching blunder, IMO. As others have pointed out, we needed
him to develop his inside game, and he went entirely in a
puzzling opposite direction, as a 6'8" body.
I thought Petras had his best season, and I will credit Boals
for developing that, and getting the most out of a kid who has a
huge heart on the court, but lacks athleticism.
I thought Sekunda was having his best season until he got hurt,
but after coming back from his injury, he couldn't use his legs
enough to create open looks. Another puzzling piece, and don't
think Boals helped by creating enough screens for him, because
the kid could shoot.
I think UC had a much better season this year than last, and
assumed a lot more responsibility, and I do give Boals credit
for that. It's a shame that he got hurt before the playoffs, as
he was a total non-factor during the 2 game playoff stretch, as
a result.
To me, Saintel was an enigma. Clearly, the most athletic person
on the team. Had a few really solid games (UA game, for
example), but wasn't utilized effectively, IMO, by Boals, by not
being on the court enough, and not creating enough inside
chances for him as a whole. Invariably, you would see him
hanging out on the perimeter during an offensive set, which was
quite puzzling to say the least.
Yes, Coach Boals has a learning curve to embrace, and hopefully,
he learned from his mistakes this season. He's going to have
his team next year (except for Akwasi, who is golden), so no
excuses moving forward in terms of personnel. Losing 3 bigs
(not that he used them that way) is going to hurt, and it will
be time to replenish and work hard on coaching Ochefu (who is
raw as heck, but has the potential to develop).

what happened when we stopped catapulting thirty shots per game

How many times last night did we put up a shot and have ZERO Red

they box out well, but still it was a bit mind blowing.
