I think we have to be optimistic about our incoming class. On
paper at least they could be more talented than the class that
is leaving. Add to that Mayo, King and seasoned vets like Coley,
Jackson and Rouse we should be ok. As for Brenton leaving I
hope that doesnt happen and I doubt it will . He is the
Franchise Player next season by far and I think the coach has
a good connection with him. My concern is if our coach leaves
maybe after next season. His reputation will be gold if we win
Saturday building this program the way he did both on the
court and with academics. I have to feel we are contenders again
in 2012-2013 much as Vermont has been in years past.

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I'm not going to put
any limitations on the team next year. Brenton and Coley will
both be POY candidates next year in my opinion. Our bench is
already the best bench in the entire conference. We saw Mayo
last year and know he has potential to be very good. King had
A10 had offers from conferences as high as the A10 before
committing to Stony Brook and the reports we've gotten back on
him have been very impressive. Lastly I have seen scouts comment
on all four of our recruits that they could be very good in the
AE.
It will be a rebuilding year in that we have less experience
without Dougher and Joyner, but there will be no shortage of
talent.

I'm of the opinion that you now have a "program" in the AE, in
that you should be competitive every year (by competitive I mean
challenging for the title). Clearly both Albany and UVM will be
the favorites next year, but after that I think you guys are in
the next group.. One thing that Pikiell does by using his bench
as he does is give players good experience. You will return 4
players in the backcourt with significant experience (Coley,
Jackson, Rouse and Hayes), and Brenton gives you the most
important (IMO) frontcourt player in the league. McAlister will
be a 4th year Jr., and Mayo will be a 3rd year Soph., and King a
2nd year Frosh; my point being that they are familiar with the
league and what your coach wants. Add in Bracey and a good
recruiting class, and to me that's a competitive team. Finally,
your coach's emphasis on defense and rebounding means that you
are usually in every game because of that. He's adding a higher
level of talent into the program, so points should be easier to
come by assuming you remain consistent in his
principles......this year is your best shot, no question, but I
think the future is good for the program. The big key may be
following this class with a strong 2013 class, adding at least
one very good shooter, a back-up PG, as well as a developmental
big man.

I had referenced in an earlier post that Burnett also recently
lost in the semi's of his State tournament, and below is the
link to an article on that game. Burnett played in an extremely
competitive league, with many other D-1 players. I had seen
before that he is about 6'5" right now, and to me looks like a
perfect replacement for Brenton, in that he rebounds very well,
defends, but can also hit the 3-pt shot. His jump shot looks
very good (see the pics included in the article), and I don't
see any question about him being overwhelmed after this type of
competition in high school. Also, I am very familiar with the
Alhambra tournament that he will be playing in later this month,
as it's probably the top Catholic school post-season tourney in
the country. Many of the top Catholic school teams in the
Philly-area play in it every year. His team is playing DeMatha,
who is a perennial national power, and coincidentally, has a
5'11" guard who is their 6th man and is going to Bing. next

I agree with everything. It'll be interesting to see how
recruiting goes for 2013. The coaching staff has done an
excellent job recruiting the last couple years and it will
probably only get easier this summer with the Dubin Athletic
Center completed, renovation hopefully started on the Arena, and
a recent resume of two regular season titles and two
championship game appearances in the last three years.

I watched one of Warney's games on youtube the other day. I'm no
expert, but he has more tools than I thought he did. He has a
solid build that if not college ready, will be come November
after a couple months with the strength and conditioning staff.
He sees the floor and passes the ball way better than I was
expecting; he almost looked like Voelkel at times, standing at
the top arc, throwing strikes to his teammates. The mechanics of
his shot were way better than I was expecting. He doesn't rely
on his midrange game and it may not be effective yet, but it
looks like in the future it could be a really nice complement to
his game in the post. The only negative I saw was his reluctance
to run the floor. I don't know if it was conditioning or what,
but if he's not getting back on defense, he see much playing
time for Pikiell. I think potentially he can be better than I
was expecting though.

I was thinking today that it's strange to only bring in one big
when we're graduating three important front court players. I'm
assuming the coaches are high on that Mayo, King, and Warney are
confident they can fill the void left by Joyner, Rapier, and
Carter.

The battle between Jackson and Puriefoy to replace Dougher at
the 1 should be interesting. I honestly think Jackson could have
started on a couple AE teams this past season meanwhile Puriefoy
is a pure point guard and looks like a steal for SBU. Either way
I'm sure both will see a good amount of playing time.
