Looking ahead to 2017-18

We have a chance at another game in some low-end postseason
tournament, but if we haven't turned the page yet, we're at
least peeking at it. Sorry if this is too soon. I just think
we're all thinking about it anyway.
PG: Almonacy, McKenzie, Long
G: Iroegbu, Olaniyi, Donohoe
G/F: Nyama, Saintel, Yeboah, Sekunda, Garcia
F: Sturdivant, Ochefu
C: Petras, Campbell
Bold are the returning starters. By no means are they locks for
next year, particularly Sturdy.
The $64,000 question is what we do at point guard. Almonacy
looked overmatched. Iroegbu was never given the opportunity,
which makes me think he can't do it. Could either of the
freshmen get a look at extended minutes there? We've been
blessed the last few years.
It's a solid group of swingmen, but this is assuming Nyama
doesn't take a post-grad year elsewhere. Four newcomers, three
scholarship spots (Walker, Woodhouse, Mitchell) ... something
has to give, right? Maybe I'm missing something.
Does Campbell make it back? Almonacy? If not, does Boals bring
in frontcourt depth? I think everyone else belongs here. I'm
eager to see what Garcia brings to the table, as well as these
freshmen. With Ochefu, I'm hoping we step in it like Vermont did
with Lamb – a 6-6/6-7 wide body who can be plugged into the 4 or
5 for the next four years.
My projected starting lineup: Freshman/juco transfer at PG,
Iroegbu, Yeboah, Saintel, Sturdivant.

I would add Petras to that list who should not return . Bring
in a Juco transfer that can shoot , jump and handle the ball .
Interesting to see if we go on to a minor tournament somewhere .

thanks for putting this together and also for all your pregame
posts.
firstly, id like to see one team (any team!) revert back to a
12345. it seems those days are over and now its GGGFF.
am i crazy to think that maybe iroegbu could play the 1? ok if
im wrong. its possible he was merely behind woody (which then
raises the question why didnt we just start iroegbu at 2?).
i also would like to see more toughness in the paint for SB.

Iroegbu did start at the 2 at the beginning of the year but
struggled. With Almonacy not giving us much, I have to think we
would have seen UC run the point if the coaching staff had any
faith in his ability to do it. We really never saw it.
Guys like the Rowleys, Campbell (not that Campbell), O'Day, etc
who don't need the ball but aren't lost without it and can set
screens, box out, and hold their ground on the block defensively
... we need those. Don't have to be towering or big shot
blockers; just take up some space and give us a physical
presence underneath on both ends. I'm hoping Ochefu's at least
that.

First of all, great info on this board; so glad that I found it
recently. Thanks to all for the truly solid contributions.
I agree with most, but here's my 2 cents:
Point guard is certainly an issue, but in fairness, Almonacy has
not been given much of a chance. I remember how bad Carson was
his first few games as a Seawolf. Not saying that Almonacy is
the definitive answer, but I think he needs to add 15-20 pounds
of muscle, and given a fair chance. Maybe not as a starter, but
he needs regular playing time to determine if he can cut the PG
position or not. Hard to grade him this year, when Woodhouse
played 30+ all season.
UC didn't impress me enough with his ball handling skills to be
a PG, and he also seems to have a shoot-first mentality. Aside
from Stef Curry perhaps, I don't think this is what we want from
a PG, and I don't think he fits that role on this team.
Nyama isn't going anywhere. Why would he leave a situation
where he's going to be a main player. Only situation I can see
him leaving is if he transfers academically for academic/career
reasons.
Petras isn't going anywhere. He seems like a really good kid
with a positive attitude, but obviously his athletic skills,
particularly on the offensive end, are limited. Look for him to
log his 10-15 minutes per game again next year. He is a big
body on the defensive end, and as we all know, bigs are hard to
come by at this level.
Sturdivant is the big enigma. What on earth happened to him
down the stretch? He looked like a guy who forgot how to play
basketball. Was it physical? Was it mental? Whatever the case
may be, he needs to get his mojo back, and have a strong
preparatory off-season.
Campbell is a good candidate to leave, IMO. He's been riding
the pine for 2 years now (1 as a redshirt), and doesn't appear
to be on Boals' short list. A Pikiell recruit, look for him to
be pushed out.

Nyama, Yeboah, Saintel, and Sturdivant, I know nothing about
the incoming class, except for a little about Garcia, so
depending on the strength of Boals' recruiting class, I may be
way off base.
Prediction: Nyama and Yeboah make 2nd team. Yeboah will be 1st
team his Junior year; I really think this kid is special.

Do not overlook the new recruits joining the Seawolves next
season. I think Corry Long could definitely be in the mix for
starting PG, after leading his team to a championship and being
POY--excellent recruit!!
Anthony Ochefu started on one of the best overall teams
anywhere-another championship, and may give Sturdivant a run for
his money at the post.
Elijah Olaniyi, from what I saw of his videos, is simply
outstanding (led another championship team), and may end up at
Wing with Yeboah. Then there is Garcia, who from all accounts
could potentially be a big piece of the puzzle next year.
Presuming that Nyama elects to stay, the Wings could have a lot
of options next season, with Segunda and Saintel being
situational role players.

It's hard to know what Nyama's thinking at this moment - could
be a preposterous thought, could be a done deal. No idea. But
it's a road that many have traveled; granted it's probably a
fraction of those who stick around for a fifth year.

I still think there's room for Petras and Campbell here even if
their roles are modest. Former will be back, guessing the latter
is 50/50.
I was more surprised by Sturdivant's two months than his last
two, and think when the dust settles he's a lot closer to the
latter.
I hope you're right about Almonacy. I'm still scarred by my poor
analysis from the scrimmage, where I and a buddy came away
saying he was the best player on the floor and would play major
minutes. Huh? What happened to that? Very puzzling. It's
possible he has it in him, and like you said, maybe he needs the
keys first. Call me a skeptic.

RE: Almonacy, I wasn't super-high on him, after watching him
play in the Suffolk Championships, but his shooting impressed me
a lot more than his passing and basketball IQ. Since we're
talking about prior analysis, I have to be honest and say that I
never thought Woodhouse would have been such a force this year,
after his campaign the prior year (where he was obviously
overshadowed by others). I thought he was a good player, but he
developed into a superstar this year. Give a lot of credit to
Boals on this, who more than once, asked him to step up and take
charge. So, I think it was this extra responsibility and his
success than gave him the reins for 30+ every night, and in
turn, it was Almonacy who suffered the consequences, and became
the understudy on the bench. We'll see how he develops from
here.
Again, I'm not plugged in at all on the new recruits yet and
their capabilities - one of the many reasons I love this forum;
I can learn a lot here. One thing not going for Almonacy is
that he's a Pikiell recruit, and Boals may want to really put
his stamp on this program with one of "his guys", going forward.
I really hope Nyama sticks around; now you've got me worried.
Although he's streaky and out of control at times, I love his
athleticism, and what he brings to the table that way. I
thought he should have been a 3rd teamer, ahead of Sturdivant.

Ochefu should be an instant contributor next year IMHO- he was a
starter on a stacked HS squad so he's played with the best. I
can't wait to see him after an offseason of working out at the
college level. I'd like to see him at center- he's a bit
undersized in the big picture but it will be fine in the America
East. Corry Long looks like he has "it"- he's confident and not
afraid to take a big shot. Elijah Olaniyi is an athletic freak-
he's got ridiculous bounce and was under-recruited. He just
dropped 40 points not too long ago. I can't judge McKenzie
because I haven't followed him closely enough with him out of
the region.
Andrew Garcia is a big wildcard- he's athletically quite gifted
and definitely has the college build. I haven't seen enough film
on him but people in the program raved about him.
What I envision next year is an uptempo athletic offense that
will thrive in the transition game. The personnel weren't there
this year to be honest to fully utilize that system that Boals
will implement- we will see a lot more running and scoring in
transition with the team speed we will have next year.
C- Ochefu/Petras/Campbell
F- Garcia/Sturdivant/Saintel
F- Yeboah/Nyama/Sekunda
G- Olaniyi/Long
G- Almonacy/Iroegbu/McKenzie? [completely up in the air]
This is a talented roster with tons of top tier athletes. I
would love to get a JuCo depth big man that fits the mold of a
Dallis Joyner from a few years back to provide some tough
rebounding and depth. I also wish I had more clarity at our
backcourt. I think Olaniyi and Long will be fun to watch but
neither were asked to distribute the ball in college. I'm still
not sold on Iroegbu being anything more than depth- his shooting
is horribly inconsistent and he doesn't move the ball.
Sturdivant is going to need to elevate his game- he just flat
out disappeared at the end of the year unfortunately. He's got
talent and plays hard but will need to spend the offseason
figuring out what happened. I doubt everybody will be back and
there may be some redshirts.
Overall, I'm super excited to see the 2017-2018 version of the
team. I think it's going to be the most athletic team in the
conference by a fair margin. Hopefully we can turn that athletic
skill set into lots of wins. I think the team is going to be a
lot of fun to watch for sure.

Good stuff MD. I disagree with you on Petras being our C though.
If it were up to me I would make Petras a Wolfie mascot. He is
that bad. I would start Campbell over petras. not so much for
campbell offensive skill but more for his defense..
Almonacy doesnt have the size, to compete with div I players. He
is a great kid but but I think he is to small to compete in this
league.
