Hartford might have a little something here. It's just two wins
in a row, but a W here is no certainty. Then again, when you're
taken to the wire at home against Maine, what is?
The Hawks not only won at UMBC last week but also scored an
overtime win over Lowell WITHOUT the services of their leading
scorer, Jalen Ross, who missed the game with an injury ... it
just occurred to me he could have easily been named after Jalen
Rose. I dunno. Maybe not. Anyway, for UH to do it without Ross
as well as John Carroll, a key member of their frontcourt,
that's pretty good. It took overtime and also career highs from
Dunne (29), Lynch (22) and Attia (19) to get it done.
Dunne came out piping hot against us, scoring the Hawks' first
13 points en route to a 22-point day. He ran into some foul
trouble shortly after that run – second foul with 14 minutes
left in the first half; third foul with 4 minutes left – but I
thought UH did itself a disservice by not feeding him the ball
when he was on the floor. Attia and Hobbs played just half the
game due to fouls also, allowing George Blagojevic to make an
imprint on the game. Lynch played 26 minutes but didn't score;
quite a difference from his most recent effort.
We murdered them on the glass last time – 46-28 – and a similar
disparity would go a long way in getting us another W. As we
said in the Maine thread, an SBU win and UMBC loss (at Albany)
means we're locked into the #2 seed for the conference
tournament. Surely no one could have anticipated that in the
preseason.
Yeboah had one of his better games the last time against UH. I'd
love to revive him for the stretch run here. He's topped 20
minutes just once in the last five contests and shot 2 for 21
over that stretch.

SBU, and specifically Woodhouse and Sturdy, just looked
out-of-sync vs Maine. While "the issue" from the past week has
(perhaps thankfully so) faded from discussion, one might assume
this was a somewhat disruptive week for the team heading into
that last game. Who knows...I certainly have NO inside info.
Hopefully whatever it was (and no doubt a good part of that game
was Maine playing well), I hope SBU takes care of business on
Weds and maybe gets a little help. Besides UVM who has clearly
separated from the pack in regular season, the AE is about the
same as always--a whole bunch of teams all pretty close and able
to win a game any night. It would be nice to get that 2 spot
wrapped up asap.
PS, long way to go but I like the mention in the article Hammer
posted. Good to see SBU getting noticed to a small degree. I
like the fight and experience of this team come AE tournament
time against anyone. As always, thanks for the preview

*Likely* to get Vermont twice more? I dunno, man. I still don't
count anything as a win until the buzzer sounds; last year was
way different. We are just +27 over 13 home games this year.
It's still nice for Boals and the guys to get a nod though.

Assuming we lock up the 2nd seed, I wonder who do we prefer as
3rd seed: Albany or UMBC. UMBC, after a strong start, is on a
downward slide. On the otherhand, Albany, after a poor start,
picking up the pace. But we beat them 2 times already. I would
have still preferred UMBC to Albany. But it seems like we are
likely to face Albany as 3rd seed.

Albany always gives us fits . I would like to see us against a
UMBC. Its hard to beat any team 3 times in the same season so
I'm hopeful about our meeting with Vermont.

I always like to play the weaker defensive team, so I would
definitely want to play UMBC over Albany. You know the team that
has won the first two times has won the third game by a dramatic
amount compared to losing. In the early 80s, John Madden made
that silly statement that it's always hard to beat a team three
times in a season.
So over a 10-year period in college basketball including almost
1,000 games, the team that won the first 2 games won the third
meeting 72% of the time. So it clearly doesn’t follow that it
is hard to beat a team 3 times. In fact, it’s actually kind of
easy.

Lost a real, real Seawolf fan tonight, guys. It would be
difficult to find a bigger supporter of SBU athletics than
Seawolf80. He missed very few games going back to his time as an
undergrad, and I saw him as recently as the UNH game despite
heavy chemo and dialysis. Loooooved his alma mater, no matter
the sport.
RIP Bob Furlong aka Seawolf80.
