I really really hope that the fans brings everything they have
Saturday night. It will take that and an excellent effort from
our guys to beat a very solid Vermont team.
How good have they been recently? They've won nine straight –
victories at Siena and vs. Harvard, and then the first seven in
conference. All but one of those wins have come by double
digits, including four conference road wins, most recently at
New Hampshire and at Albany. Double digits against them both?
That's impressive.
This team can really shoot it. In conference, they're up near 53
percent from the field, and 41 percent from three. Of note,
Hofstra transfer Darren Payen, not mentioned above, is 24 for 29
and third in scoring in conference play despite playing only 13
minutes! The Microwave! The Cats will pick their spots from
three but won't overdo it, with only 29 percent of their
attempts coming from distance.
Ernie Duncan's had a modest (redshirt) sophomore season. I would
have pegged him as a conference player of the year candidate
coming into the year, but he hasn't produced as expected. Duncan
had *33* against Hofstra in November – a night he's fully
capable of if you saw his 23-point effort at IFCU last year –
but that's been the exception. He hasn't hit double digits in
the last nine games for Vermont. I'll believe it when I see it.
He has a beautiful jump shot.
Vermont also hasn't needed him as much. Henson, a transfer from
Tulane who averaged 6 and 4 for the Wave as a sophomore but has
bumped up his production with UVM. Becker also added Anthony
Lamb, a NYS Class A All-State first teamer at Greece Athena,
where he averaged better than 30 points a game his senior year.
We have to watch Trae Bell-Haynes off the dribble. In terms of
AE guys who can blow past their defender, TBH stands out to me,
and we have given up some easy ones this year.
Out-of-conference common opponents: We beat Northeastern by 2 at
home, Vermont lost by 2 at home; we got bombed by Hofstra,
Vermont beat them on a neutral floor by 14.
Massive stretch here for us ... first-place Vermont Saturday,
third-place New Hampshire on Wednesday. Need to get at least one
so we're in a good spot to host two games in the conference
tournament.

Vermont always gives us fits. Even last year we struggled with
them . A very good balanced team every year .

Noticing the vocal UVM fanbase pretty confident about this one
already, and why wouldn't they be? Basically you have a
significantly improved 15-16 UVM squad that last year nearly
beat the best SBU team in history playing this year against
SBU's 15-16 second team plus rag-tag band of add-ons. What's not
to like if you're a UVM fan?
But hey, I'll be butt down in seat rooting for SBU.
PS, don't forget a next game against UA to add to the big ones
coming up. I still can't figure out what happened with that
first UA game....

Tough one tomorrow night. UVM has experienced size and depth to
go along with a number of perimeter shooters. As noted earlier,
we must keep Bell - Haynes out of the lane.
They seem to be playing an improved brand of defense as well so
I wonder where we get our points from. Woodhouse will need to be
exceptional and Sturdivant cannot get lost in their size. We
need contributions from everyone. I am hopeful for a big effort
and I want to be wrong but I fear we may have our hands full.

When an opposing player fouls out, we and the students need to
chant "shame ... shame ... shame ... shame" a la Game of Thrones
as the player walks back to the bench. There, I said it. There
were three or four opportunities for it on Wednesday.
When the other team's shooting free throw, I also think students
should hold up headshots from opposing players' friends Facebook
or Twitter pages, right when they get set to take the shot. Guy
takes a look at the rim, up goes a photo of some friend in one
corner, another friend in another corner, and it might break
their concentration or make them laugh inside.
Instead of making a bunch of noise, change it up. Moo or baa one
time, count down from 15 so they're shooting on 6, just so they
don't know what to expect each time at the line.
Maybe all that's obscure to you but it makes sense to me. I was
an elite student fan back in the day.

Nice assist by UMBC just now to help SBU in the short term no
matter what tonight. Double OT or not, that was a heck of a
score in that one.
