UMBC went to back to back title games in 2008 and 2009, winning
it in '08. They've had some leeeeeean years since then though,
so much so that this is their first double-digit win season
since that '09 year when they came out of nowhere to make the AE
final before losing to Binghamton.
Win totals over the last seven seasons: 4, 5, 4, 8, 9, 4, 5.
Yuck.
Enter Ryan Odom, son of longtime Wake Forest head coach Dave
Odom. In his debut season on the bench, he has these Retrievers
on pace for 20-plus wins, and there's a new arena set to open up
later this year. So UMBC might have something here.
The differences between this year and last year are staggering.
Shooting numbers are up across the board – so much so that
they're up near 48 percent from the field as a team and over 40
percent from three. That's good by anyone's standards. But most
of all ... they're playing some defense! Some anyway. After
giving up 83 a night a year ago, that number's down to 73 this
year. Opponents field goal percentage is down more than five
points to .443. They're plus-five in turnover margin when
compared to last year (-3.9 to +1.4). Instead of a track meet,
they're digging in a bit and the results are showing.
I still don't think this is a game that's in the 60s or even the
70s. UMBC can still score, led by Lyles, who's again a favorite
to lead the conference in scoring. We all should remember
Darley's first half in the AE quarterfinal here last year. A
huge addition was the kid Maura, who was an All-American in
junior college after leading the country in assists (9.6/game).
And between he, Darley, Sherburne and Elliott, they can really
stroke it from distance.
I think we're all more comfortable when Sturdivant's getting the
ball on the block and converting. While the three is still a big
part of our game, having him up over 15 or 20 points really
opens things up for the shooters. The same goes for Yeboah. We
need his presence in the mid-range game.

I was thinking about that the other day.. in terms of ambition
and spending capability, UMBC quite rivals SB at the moment in
AE. Having fertile Maryland to recruit from and a brand new
arena at a great location between DC and Baltimore, UMBC should
stay competitive for a while...regardless of whether Odom stays
past couple of seasons. UMBC HC position will be an attractive
job.

I understand the frustration of many regarding Almonacy.. but we
should be patient and give him time to develop. This is his
first year..I am sure he will develop into a starter.. and if
not then at least a good backup PG. Not everyone becomes a star
player and there can be only be 5 starters. A good team is more
than 5 starters.. quality deep rotation is very important.
By the way.. Was it just me or did I see some nice outlet passes
from the paint from our favorite Petras ;)

UMBC is not a very well-regarded school down in Baltimore.

This UMBC game begins a stretch of 3 big home games. With a new
coaching staff but most of the same roster, the Retrievers have
shown significant improvement. Lyles is a talented scorer and
they have complementary pieces who seem to have stepped up this
season. With tough games against UVM and UNH to follow, a win
Wednesday would really help the Wolves in their effort to
potentially secure a home game in the conference tournament. I
know that is a way down the road, but it is not too early to
consider it.

Another big game in Albany Wednesday when Vermont visits the
Great Danes. Love to see an Albany win . Vermont is tough again
this season .

Somebody brought it up elsewhere. I wonder what would happen if
they stuck Almonacy at the 2, ran him around a bunch of screens
and/or put him in a corner, and told him to fire away. I just
don't see him as a 1 here – even if we need him there this year
just to give Woodhouse a blow – but couldn't he be who Iroegbu
is/was at the beginning of the year, with maybe even more
ability to create/make a shot? I'm really surprised by his
limited role – not now because we've seen him but just based on
what I saw in the preseason when he looked really good and
really comfortable.

In a strange way, I almost feel like a UVM win on Wednesday at
Albany helps us. I think most of us would agree Vermont is
likely to be at least a 2 seed in the conference tournament.
I think we should look at Albany as more of an obstacle for a
better seeding moving forward. Just a thought.

Almonacy is way too small to play the 2. I think Almonacy only
fits as a backup PG at Stony Brook. I really feel his best fit
would be at a DII school. Also, I'm surprised that he doesn't
have more speed and quickness.
I wouldn't be surprised if Campbell and/or Almonacy aren't on
the team next season.
